This.

On one hand I can't blame him. He's free to go play wherever he wants/thinks is best.

On the other hand I think this isn't a great look for the kid - because it certainly wasn't a playing time/build around me/get opportunities decision. This was obviously strictly personality driven. Which means either he refused to play for somebody other than Saul (boo hoo) or he absolutely hated Boals (seems doubtful, but possible I guess).

Either way - on to the next. Recruit em up Jeff!

Orrrrrr......maybe he just wanted a change? Who hasn't just wanted a change sometimes?

Hopefully he does not have to sit out. I am ok with him leaving, we don’t need players that get emotional and transfer. We have had much better power forwards that could have left but they stayed and represented Ohio U. Go Cats

This makes more sense now that we know he won't have to sit.

I think he was gone no matter who the coach was. Good luck to Jason. He will be missed in the Convo.

Looking at Xavier’s roster, they return three forwards that averaged double figures and they signed a 4 star guy. He may be depth for them.

Best of luck to JC. Was he a good player, absolutely. Was he on his way to becoming one of the all-time Ohio greats like many on here think he had the potential to be...I don't think so.

As I've said many times, expect the worst and hope for the best when it comes to who transfers out and which recruits who signed stick and which recruits we were going after stay interested. It is what it is....these next two years are about finding guys who want to play for Ohio and Boals. It could be a rough two years before the light starts shining on the Convo again. I believe in Boals, but folks have to be patient here first two years. This is a massive, massive rebuild job. Something that we haven't seen in a long, long time. Even Saul's first year doesn't compare to what Coach Boals is up against. Carter isn't going to be the last player off this roster to transfer out. Let the recruiting begin.

Good luck to him. I hope he is able to compete at this level and earn playing time. Almost no risk on X's part.

I guess I need to understand why he doesn’t have to sit out a year. Will he have graduated before transferring? Simmons and others who transferred in had to sit for a year.

He is apparently on track to graduate either by the end of spring or summer.

Not sure what three players you are talking about, but Marshall plays the 3 and Jones plays the 5. All the other returning players are guards.

Jason will be competing with 2 4-star freshmen for playing time at the starting 4 and backup 5 position.

Can't really fault him for leaving. I just hope Boals can turn us back into a program where no player would ever think about transferring out from.

If he ends up a grad transfer, he better get the Simmons treatment from posters or it will be hypocrisy on the highest level.

I don’t think so. Simmons bailed on the coach that brought him to Ohio. This is completely different.
Can’t blame Carter one bit. Good luck competing for time against those 4 star studs.

You're asking for the impossible. 40% of Div I players transfer by the end of their sophomore seasons.

Zach Hankins, Tyrique Jones and Naji Marshall all averaged double figures last year. More importantly, if he wants a shot at the NBA, he has to develop wing skills. He will not get that luxury at Xavier.

By that point, Simmons had a good idea Saul didn’t get extended after his 3rd year, knew writing was on the wall. Every player that is eligible through grad transfer rule is a free agent. He would have tested waters whether Saul was here or not.

I think it’s fair to assume that Carter most likely would’ve transferred if Saul were still here. I guess the optics just look maybe a little better that he has the convenient excuse of saying he doesn’t want to deal with a coaching change at Ohio.

Hankins is done. He doesn't have any eligibility left.

He has zero chance of playing in the NBA. My guess he he has no interest in playing for a new coach in a rebuilding process. Like Simmons - he got his degree from Ohio - good for him and good luck in the future. And thanks for the time at Ohio,

It is laughable that you don't see the differences in the 2 situations.

You are obviously compromised in this situation, similar to the recruitment of Ben Wight. I'll slow things down so you can understand. They are actually similar situations. As I stated with Simmons, he had a good idea where the program was heading. Saul did not get an extension after year 3. Simmons and anyone else with a fully developed brain could see the significant dip in recruiting which would further take the program in the wrong direction. If you are a player in his position, do you stay with the sinking ship or do you take the opportunity with a program of the caliber of Michigan? Easy choice. Carter is doing pretty much the same thing. He's starting over with a well established program like Xavier and he'll be eligible right away.

I will also state the obvious: between Carter and Wight, you definitely have a type.

I don't think I am compromised like you are claiming Andrew is for whatever reason, so let me chime in on why fans see this as two different situations.

Jaaron's situation
1) Team coming off back-to-back 20+ win seasons
2) Team came within one possession of beating the eventual MAC champs in the MAC semi-finals
3) Coach returning
4) Core of players returning (Carter, Dartis, Laster)

Carter's situation
1) Team coming off back-to-back 14 win seasons
2) Team hasn't made it to Cleveland in back-to-back seasons
3) Coach not returning
4) Core of players leaving or hurt with unknown status (Kirk, Dartis)

Man oh Man. Why do you have to be so condescending and holier than thou? You treat everyone else on this board like they are the Village Idiot and portend that you have an insider's knowledge of recruiting and players motivations as if you have talked to them directly.

If I did not know better I would think we have finally arrived. Now we have message board warriors degrading other posters just like a Top 50 program.
