You must not have gone to many Reds games this year.......

Or Bungles games or a myriad of other pro sporting events. It's a chance to see and be seen. Jeff just look across the court from you at OU games and see how many students are buried in their phones. We are luddites in the modern world. Check out that link I posted about average viewing age.

I guess I can understand students going to games just because it's a social activity and not really being interested in the game. But for adults to pay hundreds of dollars to go to pro games and do the same, I don't understand that. They can't find a cheaper way to socialize?

I've been going to Giants games since the original Giants Stadium opened.
Went to just about every one, even when they were terrible.

There has been a big change in the fans since they moved into the new stadium.

I sat with pretty much the same people at Giants Stadium from the year it opened till it closed.

Now its all "transients" (different people every game).

For the most part the adults seem interested in tailgating before and after the game and spending the game itself buried in a phone, usually making bets.

The kids spend the game eating and playing games on their phones.

The attitude really turned my wife and I off,to the point where we only go to a couple of games a year.

You make some good points. I can't understand why someone would go to, say, a MLB game, pay the ticket prices, then spend the whole damn game in some restaurant or bar visiting with people...I thought you went to the game to watch the game.

While I know it's not the same in terms of ticket price, I go to Clippers games as a social event, or a date with my wife. I don't pay complete attention to the game on the field, and I rarely stay until the end. I don't know most of the players because, frankly, I'm not an Indians fan. The only time I follow the game closely is when they're playing the Reds affiliate Louisville.

All that said, back to giacomo's thought - I guess I see where you're coming from. It feels to me like you're describing an NBA game. ;)

I don't think The Convo has ever approached that level of "distraction". I do think some level of fan contests, t-shirt guns, etc. are necessary though, in order to engage and attract a larger audience and widen the fan base.

We, the 10% of Bobcat game attendees on this board, clearly don't represent that category of fan. But that category of fan is needed and desired by every team out there.

Like hosting a party and insisting everyone pay attention and appreciate your tasteful music mix, telling people what to enjoy at a sporting event is exhausting.

I don't get it either Jeff. Watch the game! But, if it gets fans in the seats and at concessions, I guess its OK. I once missed an entire game at the Convo while sitting in my seats because my guest thought we were there to chat about various other things the whole time. Argh!

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Exactly this. There are a number of people on here obsessed with the notion that if a fan fails to show support in the same manner as they do, they are doing it wrong.

The new Metlife stadium is set up where their high end restaurants are on the same level as the high end ($750.00 per seat/per game) seats.

According to the people I know who work Giants games, the restaurants are packed all game.
At $750.00 a seat I'd be glued to mine.

Your comment reminds me of the following: One of my hobbies is amateur radio. Most HF transceivers run from $700 to about $3,500. One manufacturer several years ago got out a real Cadillac model with a price tag of $20,000. The word was that buying one of these radios came with a coupon redeemable for one free consultation with a divorce lawyer.

The job to put the new seats into The Convo came with a 2.85 million price tag and the new scoreboard is another 1.98 million on top of that. What is going on with naming rights for the arena? Is a donor identified for the basketball practice facility? Big news could be around the corner.

The "for sale" sign for Convo/Peden naming rights is pretty old and faded at this point. They have been looking for five years and have either received no offers or, more likely, no compelling ones. If I were a potential sponsor of either building, I'm not sure I'd want to make any investment right now. College sports are changing quickly and unpredictably and those changes are not likely to result in more exposure for the Ohios of the world.

Does anyone know if O.U. is still looking into building a new skating rink to replace Bird Arena ?

I believe the idea was to build it next to or near Ping.

If that does happen, they could renovate Bird into a basketball practice facility.

Instead, they'll probably raze it, make it greenspace, and apply for funding for 3 separate projects instead of making it one project. Ahhh, the OU way.

There's a basketball gym in Grover. Couldn't that be used for practice space? All it's used for now is 1 credit hour tae kwon do classes and the like.

The justification for a new Bird Arena near Ping was to save energy costs.

They never really explained that in any detail.

You'd have to save a lot of energy to make up for the cost of a new ice rink, especially given the soil conditions in the area near Ping.
Everything has to go on piles.

Is that court still there?

I remember seeing an article a while ago indicating they either they had,or were planning on getting rid of it.

I heard Fred Johnson's family was gonna take another swing at naming rights.

I’ve heard the name Soros floating around, and the only reason this has not been announce is OCF is threatening to pull all donations if that happens.
