They weren't at the opener, and I don't believe they were at the titanic struggle with Duquesne. The Sook pavilion was basically empty, which was one of the complaints about game day experience. I reached out to Jackie O's and it sounded like they wouldn't be back this year. Julie Cromer announced on the Albin show that they are back. So, early indications are that she and her staff are addressing the issues. I plan to enjoy one...or so... tomorrow!

Not to talk completely bad about my former employer, but everyone talks about how good the J-school is but I never saw it. The students I interacted with that will succeed are the ones that went out and grinded themselves, asked questions, sought help from professionals. Those that didn’t, won’t. I’ll say that in my time there (about 4 years) the number of people I know will fail (or extremely struggle) far outnumbered those I think will succeed.

I was in school from 2000 to 2004 and this was absolutely the case when I was in school, as well, and I'm sorry to see that not much has changed. You think "hey, I got into a top journalism school," and no one tells you that that's just a line on a resume unless you have the self-confidence, know-how, free time/money, and initiative to do a thousand extra things that really don't have anything to do with school proper to even have a hope of doing anything in that career path. I didn't realize how behind I really was until about three years into my four-year stint, too late to change my major. More needed to be done to facilitate getting the skills and experience a kid actually needed to try to get a job, not "go to WOUB for four hours a day and see what happens." Not everyone could do that, on top of their classes and even attempting to enjoy the rest of a normal college experience.

Out of my core broadcast group (say 30-35 people, give or take), I'd say only about a third ever got a paycheck from a media outlet, and out of that third, I believe only three people still work in media in 2021.

I think it’s different because all I ever hear on this board and heard on campus was “OH MY GOD OUR J-SCHOOL! WE’RE SO AWESOME!!!”

Sports Ad. There’s a major that deserves to brag a little. Can’t keep bragging about something you haven’t been relevant in in over 20 years.

100% correct though that students rely on some kind of j-school brand recognition that is completely irrelevant if you don’t have a body of work and a quality body of work.

So, next time you complain about a WOUB presser, here’s two people telling you that the top j-school thing is complete non sense (and once again, no one in athletics is there to edit the thing properly), so using that in your argument of why it should be better is complete BS.

Not saying more work doesn’t always equal more chances (because it does), but you should leave the OU broadcast track with a tape and enough experience to have a puncher’s chance at getting some kind of job in order to meet the requirements of getting a degree. When I was there, Newswatch was all volunteer, and was basically an unpaid full-time job. Now, it’s my understanding that Newswatch is a class assignment, which it should have always been in my opinion.

I think news at noon is the class. I think newswatch is still volunteer. I think there are classes that assist newswatch though getting them some packages. Never heard the specifics of it, but WOUB got a pretty nice pay day a few years back so some people are being paid for some amount of their work.

I’ll say another issue is diversification. So many of the students I encountered wanted to be broadcasters. Didn’t want to shoot, didn’t want to edit, but they had several years of some level of broadcasting experience. They’ll never get their foot in a door not being able to shoot and edit. Like I said, I just hate how Scripps relies on this outdated mindset that they’re so good and don’t set their students up for success. They want to be broadcasters? Great! Send them to athletics. We have a crazy amount of stuff they can broadcast. Their solution? WOUB. If a student turns in something sub par? Don’t just give them some BS critique because they’re a student. Give some legit criticism and help. I’ve seen grad students put out some real duds of projects. Their equipment is outdated (similar to what I used in college almost 10 years ago. They don’t have someone legitimately attempting to help them. Exploitative isn’t the word I want to use, but for the amount of programming students give to WOUB, you’d think they’d invest in someone to actually help them.

This is getting ridiculous. This thread is about the game tomorrow... remember the football game thing? Start your own thread in the general discussion, or at least a separate one in the football section. Jeez.

I’m bitter for defending students that you continue to hate on week in and week out for something completely out of their control? You know what? I will move on. I joined this board to provide a perspective on some stuff that for years I watched you all complain about, and when given the answers you didn’t want (you obviously just wanted people to sit around and agree with you) you say I’m bitter? Haha. This website is such a joke. Have fun complaining amongst yourselves. Hopefully your inside sources keep giving you that info you’re looking for.

And how does this post, or any of your posts in this thread, relate to the Ohio - CMU Homecoming game? Sadly, your comments above are both bitter and immature. This board existed before you and will exist after you, I or anyone else moves on.

Now, to get back to the subject at hand. I'm really worried about the game tomorrow. We've had such a bad experience against CMU for almost forever. If we can beat them, I think we could turn the season around, if we lose, I would not be surprised to see us go 1-11. I hate to be overly dramatic about it, but I see this as the preverbal "must win game." If we lose, I'll be ready to ask, "Is it basketball season yet?" If we win, I'll be checking what bowls we might be able to make. Maybe I'm slightly schizophrenic and not in touch with reality, but that's the way I see it. Go OHIO!

5-26 against CMU... If nothing else, I'd like to get that ticking in the right direction. I am still scarred from the 2013 game.

I don't really know much about CMU this year, however, I know that we are quite injured and very poorly coached.

CMU 35

Given our record against them, their very good rush defense (28th in DIA) and that we couldn't put up one complete half vs the worst team in league last week, I'm not optimistic either. CMU is vulnerable through the air but our passing game has been sub-par so far. We're 128th in D1A (11th in the MAC) in passing yds per completion. That doesn't bode well. Not really expecting a blow-out but I would be surprised if we can keep the deficit under a TD.

Putting on my optimist hat, and assuming we start Rogers and he plays the majority of the game, I'll predict:
OHIO 35
CMU 21

Ask Lane Kiffin. Had a 4th and 1 from his own 34 in the 3rd quarter vs Arkansas, went for it, didn't make it, the Hogs then scored and tied the game.

On another subject, coming into today Rogers was 5 of 12 for 55 yds. So far, 6 of 7 for 130 yds.

The FG at the end of the half for CMU could be big. We've given up TDs on the opponent's first drive of the second half in three of the first five games. If they get one here, that makes it a ten-pt game.

It was disappointing that we tried the FG (that missed) on 4th and 2 in the first quarter. The offense has scored just one first quarter TD this season (special teams also had vs Duquesne). Would've been good see them go for it in that situation.

Gatekeepers suck, but my favorite thing about that "You know you went to OU if" Facebook group is the complete lack of clue many of out alumni have towards college sports.

"What channel is the game on Dish?"
"Why isn't this on regular ESPN?"
"How do I buy tickets?"
"Why don't they show the 110 performance?"
