Maybe, maybe not. We talk about what we have here and what we can be. The question has to come from a financial end at some point.

What it does mean is we start coming to the table and saying we're all in. And especially not doing it half-rear ended. Whether it means we push the athletic department to build an actual practice facility not controlled by any BS university department, set up a fund to ensure Boals and his staff are financially taken care of, or even attend home and road games. We have to step up, and in doing so be committed to going all in. It's about as ripe as an opportunity we're going to get in the reset of the college athletics world to either want a basketball program that can consistently challenge for Sweet 16 or we do what MAC programs do best, meddle in the middle, and have a comet come by once every 15 years (or in Toledo's case 40, or in BG's 53).

Well said. We should definitely put our money where our mouth is.

I've been in favor of a basketball practice facility for a while.

But the only way I see this happening is if they do something like the IPf,weight rooms and Academic Center.
Set up fund for the practice facility, and only the practice facility.

This way you're sure that what you donate to,can only be used for that purpose.

People seem, to be forgetting the reason the Walter Fieldhouse is controlled by Student affairs is because the athletic department after working very hard to raise enough money couldn’t to build it. It took student fees going into it to complete the project hence Student Affairs is in charge. So be ready to pay for a basketball practice facility if you want it. Talk is easy but the costs are real and take serious financial commitment

One issue with the Walter Field House was that the project was expanded from the original concept, including the running track.

A basketball practice facility would be much less costly, more in line with the Academic Center.

I did contribute to both, because I knew exactly where my donation was going.

I think a similar approach can work for a basketball practice facility.
If O.U. does that,I'll contribute again.

Funding for the Academic Center got a big boost from the Sook family's donation to have their name on it.

Obviously, that's something O.U. should look into.
Maybe the "Russ" family would like to donate for an athletic facility.

Then again the "Gary Trent Basketball Practice Facility " has a nice ring to it.

I have a proposal you’ll especially like BTC. ;)

How about a comprehensive project that extends the east side stands up close to the football stadium lights (no second deck) at a steeper angle with room underneath for a basketball court facility, restrooms, and concessions. Sook Center would still be convenient. Uses land that wouldn’t potentially be designated for anything else. What do you think?

Off the top of my head,I came up with 2 locations:

1.At one time O.U. floated the idea of a building new ice rink, to replace Bird Arena, next to Ping.

That project seems dead, so put the practice facility there.

2.Across the street from the Convo.
You get a new facility and get rid of "Punch Card Park".

A replacement for the Natatorium is supposed to be build attached to Ping. Current building is 35 years old but was only 10 years old when Ping was finished hence why it wasn't included as part of the Ping Center.

New ice rink isn't dead but there are some pros about having it at its current location right in the center of campus instead of adjacent to Ping.

Basketball practice facility was planned to be an extension of the Condo with a new grand entrance at street level.

Nutrition Center is a potential upgrade for Peden. The question is where to put another facility. In the corner of Peden opposite of the weight room seems logical but I do think the university likes that corner for egress. Ground level under the student stands could work as part of a project to open up the back of the student stands with modernized concessions.

That would likely require cutting into the parking lot of the field house at least 10 feet to fit it in. Then it could become support for a small deck with an awning at the top of it. Make the stadium look more modern.

The lost opportunity was to not build the Ping Center a few years earlier with a natatorium. Fieldhouse should be set Peden to attract recruits and its closer to the other sports facilities than all the way over at the Ping Center. Basketball practice facility likewise should be at the Convo for recruiting and not done in a cheap manner.

One issues that's been brought up this idea is that the area where the Convo
is,is in a 100 year Flood Zone.
That puts all kinds of restrictions on building any type of structure.

Money for basketball practice facility could come from the university if it doubles as an alumni center. Natatorium could be done with student fees an an extension to Ping. Nutrition Center perhaps a lead gift from Solich for naming the field after himself.

The goal in basketball is to be so far ahead of the average MAC program that finishing at least in the Top 5 of the MAC every year is a given and within Top 2-3 in a typical year.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Practice facilities are usually adjacent to the existing facility. We cannot do that.

I found the flood map. There is no difference between the flood zone of the parcel the Convo sits in and the entire athletic mall, which includes new buildings in the last 20 years.

See Appendix 10: City of Athens Flood Map

https://www.athensswcd.org/uploads/3/0/1/0/30105193/nhmp_...

Then see the campus master plan from 2016 with the basketball practice facility located on Richland adjacent to the Convo.

I don’t believe that for one minute. We’ve had success before and it didn’t translate into increased enrollment. We are a one horse town. Why wouldn’t the students go to the games no matter if we are winning? But they don’t because of other distractions. If the Bobcats are playing football the same time OSU is on TV, most watch OSU. We are what we are. We should strive to be competitive, but not spend a fortune trying to chase some castle in the air. Unless some deep pocketed alumns want to foot the bill. We have bigger fish to fry.

You should look at the current FEMA FIRM Map.
Just google "am I in flood zone" and put int the Convo's address.

It shows that most of the area at/near the Convo is in a Flood Zone.

There's no question that,in the past, there have been structures built in flood zones.

But,regulations regarding this type of construction, have gotten a lot more restrictive over time.

Speaking for NJ ,where I do my designs,if you want to build in a Flood Zone there are restrictions on placing fill, not increasing runoff by providing what is known as "storm water management" and "treating" run off to remove things like Suspended Solids.
Basically, your project can't have any impact on properties "downstream".

These things can be addressed, but they increase, significantly, construction costs and long term maintenance.

All we need is to stop paying all 833 of our CFOs their retention bonuses and we've saved the money in a single year.

Pardon my ignorance on the matter, but why do we need a practice facility? We have more indoor facilities than we had 30-40 years ago. Taking into account RpBobcat's expertise on building matters, it doesn't seem like an extension of the Convo is possible.

Also, take for instance that most large suburban high schools have a freshman boys and girls team, a JV boys and girls team and a varisty boys an girls team for a total of 6 teams. Many large high schools have an auxiliary gym to accomodate these 6 teams. We only have a men's and women's team. Their shouldn't be any problems with time management and use. Also, for workout purposes we have a facility that the football team uses. Can't they work out there? We have the best facilities in the MAC, the best fans in the MAC with the largest endowment and alumni support for any state school outside of Ohio State.

We are also facing a Higher Ed financial crisis which was already in place before Covid-19 arrived. We have a somewhat hostile faculty (to put it mildly) that doesn't care about our athletic prowess. Many of them are one budget cut away from being an adjunct, and wondering how they are going to pay off their student loans when by and large many of them have unmarketable majors for real world employment.

Can't we just concentrate on retaining Coach Boals and his staff and using the money associated with these elaborate ideas to keep in place what we already have? This isn't football where you have some 120+ Division I programs, college basketball has 300+ programs and we have the best the MAC has to offer. It just seems like a bridge too far for me. Unless a Bill Gates type donor steps up, let's just successfully manage what we already have.

At this point you could extend that "we are what we are" mantra to everything OU so where are these bigger fish to fry? Enrollment is down and it takes the pressure off spending money on renovating more dorms. New STEM buildings, Richland realignment those construction projects went through before the pandemic. They can close buildings no longer in use over renovating them.

Solich has said you have maintain the appearance the program is progressing so having facility goals are a good thing, even if they are years away. That is different than saying a shovel has to be in the ground by June 1st on a new building which is what posters are implying by any discussion on it.

The problem is court time. Between men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling, volleyball and who knows what else, the Convo is the only place they can practice. It sounds easy, but remember this is college and not everyone is on the same schedule like in high school.

As has been discussed widely on this board, using Ping as an auxiliary practice facility comes with its own issues as it is run by Campus Recreation and not the Athletic Department.

I'm often reminded of Ed Harris' quote in Apollo 13 when they have to fit a square filter on a round hole to save the astronauts:

"Tell me this isn't a government operation." Complete with a heavy sigh, eye roll and sarcasm.

Exactly, and the Convo was built in the flood zone, that is why there is essentially a levy around the flood plain and the building is on pilings. Convo also sitting on the corner really limits the direction you can build out.

Unless something has changed since I was at O.U., wrestling has a separate practice room.
They only use the Convo for matches.

See Appendix 10: City of Athens Flood Map

Then see the campus master plan from 2016 with the basketball practice facility located on Richland adjacent to the Convo.

Its a nothingburger as the university has several future facilities planned in the flood zone. Clippinger Phase 3 is in the flood zone and just approved.
