We beat Creighton and Preston has the kind of game we will need to beat them, coaching opportunities and Preston in the draft talk will both heat up (as might BVP transfer talk if the former both move on). Success at mid majors breeds turmoil. Simply enjoy the moment and Go Green !!!!!!!

The only openings that are better than lateral right now are Indiana, Minnesota, Depaul, Marquette, and Utah.

Do you think any of them would seriously consider Jeff Boals? Even with a win today?

(I imagine those first four are going to fight it out for Porter Moser.)

Is DePaul a step up?

Jason Preston is an excellent guard. He should not declare. For the draft. Yet. He needs to finish his college years and work real hard in the weight room. He needs a good bit more size and strength to be successful in the NBA.

The good news is that barring a crazy second half, Preston will be back next year.

Step up in pay, for sure.

But the stature and prestige ship may have sailed for DePaul. It's been a long time since they were any good at all, and even longer since they were a relevant program nationally. They haven't won two games in the tournament in over 30 years. Rod Strickland was on that team. He retired from the NBA the same year as Gary Trent.

I'll grant you that being in the Big East makes the path to relevancy very clear. You've just got to win consistently and you'll get bids. But nobody has been able to do that at DePaul in a long time. And it's probably way harder now that Illinois, Loyola, and Northwestern are all more relevant in Chicago.

They have a really qualified guy (Porter Moser) in the same town who doesn't seem to want anything to do with it. That should tell you all you need to know.

Don't forget that a lot of people have tried to poach Mark Few away from Gonzaga over the years, but he has remained there as their head coach since 1999. (He started as an assistant coach at Gonzaga in 1989). Boals' coach and mentor, Larry Hunter, had a serious job offer other than Ohio University (I believe it was at Kansas State), but he chose to stay, until he was sadly let go. I think Boals has too many significant roots in Ohio to consider a job other than, possibly, Ohio State, and that job is not available at this time. I am also not sure that going to a big money job without having roots there and an already National and International recruiting base would be wise at this point for him. I bet he stays long enough to have the Convo named after him.

Prestige and DePaul haven’t been in the same sentence in 30 years.

I agree. To play in the NBA, you have to be able to beat long, tall, fast, quick, super-athletic guards/wings off the dribble to create your own shot and the desperation 28 foot shots Preston launched late in tonight's game showed he is not Ja Morant on creating. Or even who Morant's backup is. Not yet.

Look at tonight's Celtics-Grizzlies highlights and see what I mean.

Scoring 30 vs Illinois (keep in mind that their "D" was exposed by Loyola) is not the same thing as scoring 30 vs the Boston Celtics.

But a huge step back in job security and the ability to turn it into a better job down the line. If all you want is the payday then go for it.

I could see Coach Boals waiting for the right spot to open up. So many MAC coaches, in particular, have been burned in football and basketball by taking the wrong job. Geno was torched because he took a job in Middle America that he clearly could not recruit to and did not fit into. Boals found a sweet spot in Stony Brook where he fit and then came home to us. He seems like he's happy and content and ready to build something before springing for the payday. Groce is a cautionary tale. He could have really built a juggernaut with us with his recruits he had coming in coupled with the guys he had left. Instead he took the payday, had horrible seasons at Illinois and now is doing "ok" at Akron. He will probably never get back the magic he had in four years with us. I don't behoove the man for going for the money but was it worth where he's at now? I think Boals can be picky while really enjoying himself right now being back in Athens.

That is potentially true if the Boston Celtics played with any effort on defense. Sometimes I feel like its an easier transition from college to the NBA (at least offensively) because the defense gives up so quickly.

I think the big question is with all of the financial problems that COVID has presented with athletic departments, how much money can our AD throw Boals way today? I mean, shouldn't an extension be thrown on his desk today?

I'm sure he does....winning MAC Tournament...winning first round NCAA game...etc. But would be a good move to throw some extra on the salary, even if it's 25K. Just to show him something. But again...I get it..money is tight in college athletics these days especially at MAC level.

At this point the question to us supporters becomes how bad do we want him? Does it mean we buy season tickets? Maybe, maybe not. Does it mean we donate to make sure his salary is high? Maybe, maybe not. We talk about what we have here and what we can be. The question has to come from a financial end at some point.

What it does mean is we start coming to the table and saying we're all in. And especially not doing it half-rear ended. Whether it means we push the athletic department to build an actual practice facility not controlled by any BS university department, set up a fund to ensure Boals and his staff are financially taken care of, or even attend home and road games. We have to step up, and in doing so be committed to going all in. It's about as ripe as an opportunity we're going to get in the reset of the college athletics world to either want a basketball program that can consistently challenge for Sweet 16 or we do what MAC programs do best, meddle in the middle, and have a comet come by once every 15 years (or in Toledo's case 40, or in BG's 53).

I've been in favor of a basketball practice facility for a while.

But the only way I see this happening is if they do something like the IPf,weight rooms and Academic Center.
Set up fund for the practice facility, and only the practice facility.

This way you're sure that what you donate to,can only be used for that purpose.

My hunch is he only leaves for something very big. I wouldn't be surprised if the Stony Brook years opened his eyes. I am sure it wasn't very glamorous and he was living in an environment in which he was not accustomed. Thankfully, it led to the Ohio job and a deeper appreciation of our Alma mater. At Stony Brook, he learned a lot about the subtle ins and outs of being a head coach, on and off the court.

Ohio and the probably the Midwest is his comfort zone. Hopefully, he stays here forever, but I am guessing we have him for a few more years. He could build something special here if he stays. I know it sounds crazy, but with his recruiting expertise and coaching bona fides, dare I say a Midwest version of Gonzaga?

Yes, coastal living on Long Island is notorious for its lack of glamour. Everybody hates living on the beach within commuting distance of New York City. That's why they basically give houses away in the Hamptons.

Glad to see we're keeping things in perspective now that we've had a little bit of success under Boals.
