Can I just say again how much I HATE, HATE this? I had plans with a buddy and my parents to go on 2/29 that are now completely out the window.

Makes two of us. Will be coming back from out of town on Saturday just in time for the 3:30 tip. Not happening now.

So much for an exciting Friday night of high school district basketball in the Convo.

There are a number of people from Newark planning on attending this game, supporting Jordan Dartis on senior night. Not sure how this change affects that. Might depend on the draw Newark gets in the district tournament.

Sorry, but Saturday actually works better for the High School Tournaments. Our attendance is always better if it’s Saturday evening, 2 games 7:00 and 8:45 and local eateries are also a fan. At the end of the day, we just rent the building and gladly work around whatever we have to work around. Besides, now you can come to the high school games, if it was Friday, you would have missed those exciting games.

Besides the fact that it ruins my Saturday family plans, I really wanted to be there for Jordy's Senior Day.

Is this really the best game in the conference that day?

To pile on...

My 11 year old son, whose birthday is December 12th...chose this day to do his birthday party because it was the only Saturday that did not conflict with he & his friend's basketball schedule. We had plans to take him and 5 of his friends down to Athens for the day. He loves going to Bobcat games and Athens in general...and this was all he wanted to do to show his friends this slice of his life. He is going to be crushed.

I will defend weird scheduling for TV upfront...I'll even defend in-season time changes within the same day. But this changing the day of the game less than 3 weeks before the game is completely crap. Just pick the game upfront and live with your decision. I'm so disappointed.

Good point. Akron - Buffalo might be considered a better game.

I've enjoyed one, usually 2, MAC games on Friday nights this winter but have noticed the absence of Ohio sticking out like a sore thumb. The reason is obvious, making this decision a bit strange.

Like I mentioned earlier, there are many Newark fans that I'm aware of and I'm sure many I'm not who won't be able to make it to senior night due to this change and the fact that the Newark Wildcats will be playing a sectional game that night if they win its opener a few nights earlier.

I'm sorry for your son's day getting screwed up.

I'm 100% on board with the second paragraph. If this game was originally on Friday, my plans would have reflected that. I think the AD's and the MAC Office need to be made aware of some of these stories and fix this $h!tty scheduling model.

Yeah this sucks, but I think you guys are all missing the point.

You act like OU - and more importantly the MAC - care about butts in seats attendance. They don't. Go take a gander at the OZone thread (or MLB attendance for that matter) for confirmation as to why they think this way.

With access to the internet and 8497 live streaming sports channels literally at your fingertips 24/7/365 on your TV/laptop/smart phone - more and more people are just staying home and relaxing and watching from the comfort (and cheapness) of their own homes/apartments/dorm rooms. Plus, when you try to draw actual butts in seats there's a geographical factor that comes into play. You're only realistically getting people from a few hours radius. When it's on TV or the internet? You can literally be on the moon and it doesn't matter - they can still reach you.

Organizations have figured out there's way more $$ and way more actual eye-balls for viewership by catering to the TV and internet crowd (especially when you're trying to attract NEW viewers and grow your brand visibility) than there is catering to the butts in seats crowd.

Now we can talk about how that's killing gameday atmospheres if you want - and I'd totally agree 110%. But to get all upset about this decision and how they scheduled it, and to think they'll actually care what you think - is foolish IMO.

I would say that the current Convo administration does care about what we think and improving the fan experience. I sent a six page letter to Schaus last March in response to his call for suggestions/ideas. Several of those suggestions have since been implimented with more to come. I met with a senior department official last week and shared more suggestions. One of those was implimented this past Saturday. The TV thing may a bit more difficult but they are listening and acting upon workable suggestions.

Can we ask what was implemented last Saturday? Surely it wasn't having the band play during time outs.

One comment - you're not wrong about online markets being important. But it's bad business in my opinion to reschedule games for different dates this close to the date. It's an easy way to piss off the fanbase consuming the product.
If they truly don't care about how this decision affects their ticket buying public, and I don't want to believe that to be the case, but if they don't, I'll cease buying season tickets immediately.

Do they have a way to influence the conference and the TV partners? Probably not. But they sure as hell better care that this angers ticket buying fans.

One question - Do you buy, or have you bought, season tickets and made plans with people to have this type of thing affect your plans? Because I'd think that if you have, you'd also see this from a little different point of view.

A simple solution to it all: schedule games for those Friday nights well in advance (45-60 days or more) and stick to it.

Hell if I know. The fine leadership (ha!) in the MAC offices probably should have considered this when they agreed to such a deal.

Separate thought: I'm not a follower of other boards all that much, but what are their thoughts when this happens? I know my BG friends were ticked off last year when it happened to them twice when they intended to go to games. It's a great way to build a fanbase! ;-)

The MAC is married to ESPN and that is the price schools pay. Unfortunately ESPN and its partners determine what games they want on TV and it is not always in best interest of the fans.

Most conferences are married to ESPN. Specifically for the MAC, they're married to the TV deal that gives ESPNU and/or CBSSN the option to do this. How many other conferences, besides the MAC, have this deal that allows networks to move games whenever they want? (within the confines of the agreement obviously)
