Every state school in Ohio except Miami has adopted Fake Semesters — 14 weeks instead of 16, with slightly longer class periods and, therefore, theoretically the same number of instructional hours. This, IMHO, is defrauding the taxpayers of this state.

Didn't you or I look it up once and found that Miami has about a week fewer instructional days than either Ohio or OSU? For instance, they only have classes on Monday the week of Thanksgiving (I guess so that all those Chicago kids have an extra two days to make a four hour drive?), and you know that in reality everyone has bailed the previous Friday.

Yes, you are right, Miami is now on Fake Semesters also. At one point, after other state schools went that direction, Miami held out for awhile, but they are inline now. I don't remember looking it up earlier, but if I did, I had forgotten.

And, given their infamous history during the late rebellion, maybe Robert E. Lee's birthday, too! ;-)

The article points out a number of reasons for the demise of Number Fest, including the switch from quarters to semesters.

From previous articles I've read, switching to semesters has had a major impact on Fests.

When O.U. was on quarters,Fest Season was later.

For this Spring, the latest you could hold a Fest, unless you want to try having one on the weekend before Finals is 4/18.

In addition to lower temperature, you're also more likely to get at least some rain.

Not the most conducive environment for a Fest, even for hard partying students.

I hate to oversimplify it...but wouldn't the easy answer be to look at moving the party to late August or September?

They'd have to do it when football is on the road. Parking and traffic would be a logistical nightmare if you had both in Athens on the same day. Feasible since September is mostly non-conference games and you know the dates in advance, but the organizers may also wish not to compete with watching football on TV.

You can thank Ted Strickland and Eric Fingerhut and their University System of Ohio for semesters.

May they burn in hell.
(To be clear, i say that without a hint of sarcasm)

Out of curiosity, why? Something needed to be done to reign in an out of control, redundant system that was based on individual schools' empire building far more than any rational plan on what was best for the state and efficient for the taxpayers. A lot of people think that, because of politics, they couldn't and didn't go far enough.

I know that some thought that Strickland, due to coming from SE Ohio, was going to somehow champion Ohio over the rest of the system, but honestly, that was wishful thiking.

They killed quarters. Look, I’m not saying that they should be ripped apart by a pack of wild dogs (while very much still alive and fully conscious), but i wouldn’t mourn the event if that happened.

At the time, the public colleges in Ohio had essentially the same number of students on quarters as they had on semesters (i don’t have the numbers at hand, but i did look them up before the trustees voted on the measure).

How has Strickland and Fingerhut’s “something must be done” solution worked out?

Anybody who thought that that knucklehead, or his lackey Fingerhut, would do something good for Ohio University simply by dint of his being from born in Lucasville and representing south east Ohio in Congress was either willfully moronic or dumber than a Miami grad.

As I recall,at the time ,the justification was uniformity in Ohio, and consistency with the majority of universities around the country.

As someone who had to transfer credits, between systems,it was, particularly for
technical (math,science,engineering)classes,chaos.

Academically, both systems had/have pluses and minuses.

One big problem with quarters,at least at O.U, was that the school year ended later then schools on semesters.
That made getting summer jobs and internships tough.

As I've posted before, the switch to semesters got put through, despite OSU pulling out all the stops.
The quarter system gave them a full month of "class free" football practice.

+1

and correction, OSU would get 6-7 weeks of free football practice. The Semester system actually saved OHIO a good deal of money on football fall practice.

Now wait a minute.  I resent being called "dumber than a Miami grad."  Them is fighting words! angry I told some of my GOP friends that if Ted got the Nelsonville Bypass built, I'd vote for his reelection, and I did.  Sorry he didn't win the second term.  He deserved it for taking money the greedy Clevelanders thought should have gone for a second new interstate highway bridge and redirecting to the Nelsonville Bypass and combining it with stimulus money from his BFF Barry.  The PD had a stinging editorial denouncing this decision and saying the old hick "went with them that brung him" in making such a parochial decision.  I would say that that was a decision that was "good for Ohio University."  If it hadn't been for that decision by the old hick from Lucasville we'd probably still be driving through Nelsonville to get to Columbus.  Give credit where credit is due! yes

Agreed 100%

This notion that everyone needs to do everything exactly the same way is absurd. What's best for one school in Ohio isn't necessarily what's best for another school in Ohio.

Ohio University was not broke. These changes have caused problems that did not exist before. The recent years have felt more like a culture war to standardize everything rather than an objective look at what's best for the students of Ohio University.

I've seen crazier things happen.
