Maybe Groce was overrated on his body of work, but I don't remember attending any other Ohio Bobcat Sweet 16 game in my lifetime. I had a hell of a lot more fun that season than the decades of disappointing losses in Cleveland following 20-win seasons.

Decades? Sweet 16 year was 2012. Cats won the MAC Tournament in 2010 (Groce) and 2005 and 1994.

I've been attending games for 29 seasons. 25 of those years, we did not dance. That qualifies as decades.

I believe he chose to skip at Akron hospital and go to the hospital closest to his home. In any case, this is a bad look for Groce and his "program." Most overrated coach ever, IMO.

Wow....now we are taking glee over this story at Akron? And John Groce is overrated? Not even going to dignify this with a response. I'll let Groce's record in March speak for how overrated he is. So another program in the conference is dealing with what looks like a bizarre player issue and y'all are celebrating?? Karma has a way of biting right back at ya. Careful what you wish for.

Groce recruited and built teams to make March runs. When they played Michigan and South Florida, it felt like they were favorites to win those games before they tipped off. Oh yeah, they almost knocked off the number one team in the country as well.

When I hear comments that Groce is overrated, it is no wonder that clowns are satisfied with the present state of the program. It is unfair to compare the players and coaching of Groce's teams to Phillip's as it is not even in the same universe.

Why quote a post, then put in a bunch of arrows ^^^^^?

I mean quoting it makes the point that you're referring to the other person's post by itself. The arrows are just redundant.

I'm not sure how many people you think are drinking that kool-aid at this point, but it's not many.

Well, this reasoning would apply to all MAC teams except one I believe, Kent, which has danced 6 times in the last 29 seasons. If we had danced two more times in the last 29 years, is that the mark that would make you happy? Maybe the MAC isn't for you?

We are not Kent State and that is not our goal. We are and have been a middle of the pack or lower tier MAC team, which should not be acceptable. We have blown 20-25 big leads over that span and probably have allowed 50 10 point plus runs, some without calling a timeout. Tonight we played a Kent team at home and loss control of the game. We played a team who recruited an Indian hills all-American and we recruited Indian hillís 11th man with a foot problem. We are headed in two different directions and a change may be necessary.

Groce won games in the tourney. That rarely happens to MAC teams. It's a one-bid conference, so if a team happens to win in the tournament it is a national accomplishment. Forgive me for having great memories of big victories instead of focusing on multiple 16-18 win seasons with a loss in the MAC semis. I'm taking down the family picture in my office of the pregame event in St Louis and replacing it with the 2014 CIT bracket. Thanks for reminding me what a MAC fan is supposed to desire because I forgot.

Thank you bobcat695 because you get it. I have also removed all pictures in my office from that great day in St. Louis as well. It's replaced by a picture of JSmooth dribbling out the clock in a moral victory MAC semifinal loss.

Is it really that hard to not overreact one way or the other to the Groce era? In hindsight, it's pretty easy to put into perspective.

Ultimately, his stay in Athens was wildly successful. He recruited an all-time great in Cooper and took the program to heights not seen since Snyder. But he also underperformed during the regular season and had favorable draw in that NCAA tournament when he got Michigan and USF, two teams that on paper were perfect match-ups for an undersized MAC team. (The Georgetown win is Groce's masterpiece game. It's one of the most dumbfounding butt-kickings I've ever witnessed and it happened for the team I rooted for. It's the height of Ohio basketball in the new millenium ó†if only because DJ Cooper's half-court fling wasn't a quarter of an inch over against UNC...)

I mostly agree with this. I was there at the Sweet 16 celebration in the Convo when Groce, himself, said that he was lamented that they never hung a MAC regular season banner in the rafters. NCAA tourney wins are great, but they are what they are: neutral court match ups that can often produce surprising results. Every year, it seems, mid major teams pull upsets. It was us a few times. I enjoyed those wins as much as anyone else. I taunted Akron players in 2012 from the hotel bar, then took an awkward elevator ride with a few of them half an hour later. I, unlike some here, however, can't look back on his time here with arguably the most talented roster we have ever had in Athens and feel like he didn't vastly under perform OUTSIDE of March. Even in the Sweet 16 year, we lost on the road to BG, EMU, Kent St, and a few others. How does a team that nearly made the Elite 8 lose some of those games? Jim Christian took nearly the same roster and only lost to one team in the MAC the following year. Akron. Unfortunately for JC, DJ all but disappeared in the MAC final and we missed the tourney.

I believe DJ sandbagged JC in the last game. He was unstoppable the night before. I heard there was some sort of altercation between the two on gameday.

There was something weird about that entire game. Really weird. And JC pulled the plug on DJ in that game with about three and a half minutes left at a really awkward time. He never felt like he got that hero's exit to the bench that he deserved, even in a blowout.

And if you remember, the NIT game after when I don't believe Walt Offutt attempted a shot. Truly a bizarre ending to the season in those last two games.

I simply questioned your use of "decades" not this rant. But you go you if it scratches that itch.
