Nothing sums up the Saul Phillips era more than blowing a 13 point halftime lead against Northern Illinois at home and T Kirk shooting a free throw that went wide right catching nothing but backboard. Then when I think it can't get worse, I watch an Ohio team down 6 with 23 seconds left who DOES NOT FOUL!?!?!?!?!? Folks, we quit...down 6 with 23 seconds left....are you freaking kidding me???????

Doesn't seem to be a lot of fire out there on the court. Thankfully this era of basketball will be over in 2 1/2 months. No sane Ohio basketball fan can compare Saul's numbers to John Groce or Jim Snyder ever again. I don't want to hear it. Ohio basketball has officially become a joke. #EnoughOfSaulBall #2-1/2Months

Saul Ball isn’t working. I began getting concerned a couple years ago but now it’s obvious. I love OU and am rarely critical on here but enough already. We are in for a long season and the AD is going to have to make a decision.

On a positive note the women get a massive victory in Buffalo and are now 12-0!

LOL. You are back? Thought you were done. Monroe 2.0.

Saul may not be the best coach but he wasn't shooting the FT's. That lost the game .. VanderPlas had chance, Block missed 3, Kirk is a bricklayer.

This.

Saul has to have the backbone/stomach to enforce it (I personally don't think he does). But then you demand it changes.

If it doesn't - he sits on the bench until it sinks in. This ain't about protecting guys egos - it's about winning games. Saul's job and his families livelihood is literally on the line.

I mean if we're going to lose to bottom 2 teams in the MAC at home, we might as well at least do it with guys trying to do it the right way and willing to listen/change/put in the work. We can lose to NIU at home with TK on the bench.

Nobody will want to see this team in March in Cleveland.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

15-0 NIU run ..... A #SaulBall ball staple

Protect your homecourt .... except against MAC bottom dwellers

Oh wait .... Ohio is now a MAC bottom dweller.

What night does Big Bear sponsor brown bag night at the Convo?

And while we're complaining - Jason Carter. Oof. Just bad.

Kid still can't figure out how to not foul out against bigger more physical opponents. A carryover from his freshman year sadly (has anybody actually put in work with him on his feet on defense instead of playing with his hands and chest??)

But if you're not going to be able to play defense without fouling - you gotta at least bring it on the offensive side. Something he normally does. Not so much today.

Is the argument we’re not allowed to judge a coach’s performance by wins and losses?

They can turn this around, but this is a really bad way to kick off the MAC season.

I am a true fan and that is why this kills me. I watched this game with no emotion and that kills me. We were up 13 and I looked at my wife and said "That lead will be gone." That is what I meant by being over them. I will root for them as always but as a fan when I see no fire from a team I will not have fire. And guess what, guys missing FT comes down to desire and mental toughness. That can be on a coach for developing that culture. Groce had it. Even JC had it.

Missed FT's are on the individual. In HS we practiced before school. Hitting 80% or more was easy. Repetition and concentration.

Caveat - this is not backed up by any factual research, and as such is nothing more than anecdotal eyeball test, but FT shooting around the country is a dumpster fire. Duke and Kentucky can't even find more than 2 guys who can shoot over 75% from the line consistently, let alone OU.

Possible reasons?

1) Practicing FT is "boring"
2) My AAU coach never cared
3) My handlers can't spell "free throw" (but they CAN spell "dolla billz")
4) Coaches who stress FT need to "get with the times"
5) Nobody ever got a D1 'ship for shooting FT well. Dunking? Rebounding? Shooting 3s? Sick handles? Sticky D? THOSE are what get you places.
6) Nobody ever got paid in the NBA for shooting FT well. See #5 above.

James Harden has built a HOF career around drawing fouls and making free throws.

It can get you paid.

Poor outside shooting team coupled with horrendously BAD free throw shooting team leads to disastrous results. There is NO silver lining for this team . Can’t defend it and can’t excuse it. It just is what it is. I’m sure Schaus is seeing the same thing.

yeah, I got a laugh out of this. All the time I see web "experts" posting h.s.highlights and praising a kid...for what? Making a wide open dunk, maybe the easiest shot there is. Free throws? You mean the shots that often determine who wins and loses? Who cares...

Speaking of free throws..can someone tell me I am not crazy when watching Gavin Block play and thinking something is up with him either physically or mentally? This game he had ZERO rebounds and one assist in 20 minutes. Nathan Spring could come in for 20 minutes and do that and we would at least have a rim protector. Maybe its that he isnt starting? I expected him to average a 10-6-5 this year.

It makes no sense because the best NBA players excel at the line.

Curry 91 percent. Durant 91 percent. Harden 85 percent. Irving and Leonard 85 percent.

I know TK has become the lightning rod for everything that is wrong with this team. And he is inconsistent at best, but he was the only guy who could do much on offense today. Without his scoring contribution, it may have been a 10-15 loss in regulation. This team is just not built well and it shows. It’s like a team full of role players that don’t compliment each other’s skill sets very well. Another lost year

That is very true. I was recently re-reading the Book of Basketball by Bill Simmons. When he talks about some of the guys he ranked like Reggie Miller he states that "Can you win games with Reggie? Yes. Can you win a title with him as your No. 1? No. He's a great No. 2." We have too many guys who are not Eugene Germans or CJ Massinburgs. We might put Carter on a pedestal but if he were elite he would get 15 and 9 at least every game. That is on Saul for his recruiting. Preston is a great No. 4 but he's our only freshman playing. Block is a 4 year senior and is now our 7th best player. And people need to get off of TK, he scored 22 points tonight. Without him we are blown out.

It is a team built for ball movement and we have a PG who doesn't move the ball. The reason TK is our only offense is because he won't put others in a position to excel. Let me know the next time you see him dribble the ball to create for one of his teammates. Saul is clearly in his ear and you can see it sometimes coming out of timeouts but it never lasts more than two possessions before he reverts to form. Jim Christian would win 20+ games with this personnel.

Disagree with the Kirk assessment of getting blown out without him. Yea he can score. Mostly with his acrobatics around the rim. He is virtually no threat from the 3 he just may have the all-time worst shooting mechanics in all of basketball. Play him as a small forward and create mismatches for him underneath.

Making him your principle ball-handler where his to’s far outweigh his assists is a recipe for disaster. Couple that that he is a liability of horrific proportions at the foul line would make one think you need to limit his time handling the ball, not maximizing it.

Not trying to rag on the kid, just think Saul keeps trying to pound a square peg in a round hole with making Kirk the pg. Maybe Cowart nor Preston is the answer at point but I would be more than tempted to try. What’s that definition of insanity, trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Yep. Lost a 14pt lead at home to NIU.

Nothing to see here.

Let's extend Saul, right!

The way you downplay the trajectory of this program is laughable.

We have all the answers? Screw that! How about our highly paid coaching staff have some answers!?

This was a horrific loss. Undefeated at home and lose your MAC opener to NIU at home. C'mon. That's garbage.

PS .... NIU hasn't won road game in MAC since Feb 2017. Totally respectable loss, ha!

Bshot, I seriously wonder if people like Giacomo are some sort of experiment from the Psychology Department. I mean we all have our opinions but Giacomo never throws out any facts, figures stats etc. It is all based on emotion, which is always a key indicator that insecurity is not far behind. This is what leads me to to wonder if this is some sort of Psychology experiment to get people riled up using emotion instead of facts.

For what's it's worth, the guy is a former player in the Bandy/Nee era.
