15-0 NIU run.

I think we should give Saul an extension, if only because this place is never more entertaining than when people here lose their minds about the state of Ohio basketball.

Then again, there's so much delusion here about what Ohio should be -- remember when Jim Christian was a failure for only winning a regular season championship? -- that it's pretty much just the regular state of things here, so maybe an extension isn't necessary.

But it really would make this place a much more fun place to be. I say give Saul a 10 year extension because the players like him and NCAA athletics is about education and the fun of playing a sport you love.

Unfortunately Saul makes a bunch of money to win games too so there is that. If it was just about mediocrity every coach would stay forever in a position. Your points are weak.

Said nobody ever (at least with a straight face) outside of D2,D3,NAIA or non-revenue sports. Then you're spot on.

But I said it after Purdue and it counts now as well - nothing matters but March. Horrible loss today stinks, but it is what it is.

Not sure how many more nails for Saul's OHIO coaching coffin, but another put in today with that home effort.

Here is a fact I cannot get over: the MAC is enjoying its best conference ranking in MANY years and is being lauded by national media and we are not mentioned as being a part of that. Freakin Ball State is. Kent State is. Buffalo is.

It is said with a straight face whenever the subject of paying players comes up, actually.

But I completely agree that it's ridiculous, which was my point.

I have to agree and disagree on the nothing but March comment. From a program's prestige standpoint, an NCAA bid can't be beat so yes, winning the MAC tournament in March matters. From a program's overall health - attendance, fan interest, merchandise sales, donations - games like today matter too. In this case, outcomes like today hurt the aforementioned items. Too many games like today, and the efect on those items can be devastating.

Recruiting is where it all starts.

He only played 8 guys today and one of those barely played. So really seven.

I'm not sure what that says about the state of the roster.

Flame away as needed. Blame me if you want. I won't mind.

Greencat, forget the fact that this is our beloved Alma mater and we all like Coach Phillips as a person. However, if any high school, college, or pro team consistently, regardless of talent and injuries, loses double digits leads and folds on the foul line at key junctures, we would say something is terribly amiss. It is one thing if a team has injuries and little talent and therefore is never in the game, but when one continually has double digit leads and horrible stretches on the foul line, something is terribly amiss.

29% from three combined with 44% at the FT line is a recipe for a loss.

I wanted Boals when Groce left but many on here said he was too inexperienced. Saul had NCAA teams and look what we got. JC had NCAA teams and we got blown out in a MAC title game with EVERYONE back from a Sweet 16 team. Time to bring a Bobcat home and pay him a mill.

You sent us to the Stony Brook Site. Thank you!
I just looked over their roster and discovered they only have 1 player graduating this year and only 2 next year. This can only mean that the future is bright there for Jeff.
They are 13-2 at this point. 8-2 on the road.
At this rate Jeff and his team will be receiving many offers to move on and up.

GO BOBCATS

ps Just discovered his salary is only $258k, We can give him a $100k raise and save over $200k from where Saul is currently.

First day watching basketball? Lots of reasons to criticize Saul but this is a stupid one. First, most teams go with an 8 man rotation. And keep in mind that Jordan Dartis is in street clothes and the one player you said "barely played" is also a solid contributor when healthy. I watched an exciting game yesterday between St. John's and Georgetown and guess what I learned from your post (also an OT game by the way)? St. Johns' (14-1) played 8 players yesterday therefore Chris Mullins can't recruit. Georgetown played 8 players yesterday and has a dynamic freshman class but I guess Patrick Ewing can't recruit. Duke has played two games this year decided by single digits. In both those games they went with a 7 man rotation which, of course, means that Coach K can't recruit.

We've got plenty of talent. Saul's recruiting issue is putting pieces that fit together on the court and running an offense that fits their skills.

Same here. Never understood why he didn't get a better look during that search. Thad Matta coaching tree...knows how to recruit the state of Ohio...no prior head coaching experience. Sound familiar???? John Groce. That seemed to work out pretty well. But oh wait, according to many on this board, JG never won a MAC regular season championship while at Ohio so that means he was a bust.

This might be the most ridiculous response I have ever read. You are truly comparing eight 4 and 5 star guys to our collection of 1 and 2 star players? My point is that we cannot get away at our level with playing 7 or 8 guys and having a bunch of 2 star guys sitting on the bench. Yes, big-time programs should be able to play with 8 guys because their 8 guys are all at least 3 star. We might only have one or two 3 star guys in our rotation at all. To even try to compare our situation to those programs shows you have no clue.

And by the way, your final statement proves that Saul's recruiting is awful because you RECRUIT players to fit your system. He A) has no system and B) has a mix of players who don't gel together. That is ALL recruiting.

Having grown up in Athens during the sixties and seventies, I remember the community as being very small and tight knit. (In fact, I am still in touch with people I went to elementary, middle and high school with, not to mention my many college chums.) Saul has, obviously, been a rather notable member of this community for five years now, and I am curious as to how his struggles are impacting the community, if at all. While there has always been some division between the University community and "us" townies (I happened to have been connected to both sides), is there a sense of people rallying around Saul and his family or not really being all that interested or concerned? After all, professors, students, and even coaches come and go all of the time. Likewise, is there any observable distance or tension between Saul and the athletic director, or is everyone just pretending that everything is copacetic?

St.Johns and Georgetown combined for around 70% at the free throw line. Apparently they can play an 8 man rotation and still have the stamina to make free throws. Duke made 77% from the line in their only loss (Gonzaga by 2).

How do the top 7 or 8 players for the Bobcats compare to the top 7 or 8 from St. Johns or Georgetown or Duke?

To quote Team Rankings.com today:

After losing to N Illinois 72-66 yesterday, Ohio is now projected to finish the regular season 14-16 (6-12 MAC).
• The odds that the Bobcats make the NCAA tournament are currently 1%.
• We currently rank Ohio as the #186 team in the country, and the #10 team in the MAC.
