Looks like OU poached Arizona's Head Coach Sean Hogan for the hockey team.  Looks like he did a good job improving the Wildcat program and comes from MAC country with ties to the Western Michigan hockey program.

You do realize this is just club hockey, right? There's way too many out there (even among the somewhat well informed) that think we have a real team.

It's not like we really stole "Arizona's" coach. He was probably barely even paid. Many club coaches are grad students or in a player-coach type scenario.

It's a real team and to suggest otherwise is insulting.

It is a real team and it relies on the University for very  little, relatively speaking.

Please refer to the on-going debate on the football page about increasing independence from colleges in that sport and what a "revolutionary" idea that would be.  Then return to Ohio hockey and throw a little support in their direction.

Real team?  I guess over 1000 people per game who PAY to see them aren't there to watch someting that doesn't matter?
Do you know any thing about Ohio hockey?  By your answer, I think not.

You know what I mean...perhaps "real" was a poor choice of words. But you do understand they are not an actual NCAA team, right? They're not playing Miami, BG, OSU, etc. Too many people don't get that...even those that are somewhat well informed.

It's hard for me to get too into club sports. I mean, we have club baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc...I wish them well, but just not something I spend time to follow.

I think the word you need say is "varsity".  All the schools you mentioned once had "club" teams before they became varsity.  It's not like a college decides to have a varsity hockey team and over night a few thousand people PAY money to see them.  "Club' hockey has evolved greatly in the past 30 years.  They are not pick up games or recreational games.  Games are not drunken fights between players.  Players on the Bobcat squad play to win.  The Ohio hockey organization is better managed and funded than alot of the NCAA DIII schools and the skill level is a step below DI.  In fact, I believe the skill level of todays players is equal or better than the varsity players Ohio had in the 60s and early 70s.
ACHA is the college hockey organization that sets the rules for the schools.  Before the ACHA, every school did their own thing and it was chaos.  Some schools played undert NHL rules, some NCAA.
Any way, this team has been around for nearly 60 years has alot of alumni and followers. To say it is not a real team is an insult.

Yes I understand that we don't have a Division 1 hockey club, but I still thought it was interesting news.  Especially to anyone who was wondering who would be found to replace the outgoing coach.

Well, unless you're Penn State

Any how, Ohio University has 50 some club sports. I'm sure it's fun for those involved and everyone plays to win...to do otherwise would be silly. It's nice to see these teams have success, hopefully they continue to.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Penn State had a club team for 40 years before going varsity.  They packed their arena to the brim on home games.  So they had a base of several thousand hockey fans before opening their new barn.

Hockey definitely is a difference kind of college sport. Only Division I (scholarship) and Division III (non-scholarship like in all D-III sports) compete for championships. There are only 59 Division I men's hockey schools (including 21 that aren't D-I in other sports) and 74 in Division III. There are only six Division II schools and there is no Division II championship. That means there really aren't many opportunities to play NCAA hockey, especially on scholarship (18 scholarships per school in D-I and 13.5 in D-II). Some really good players play college club hockey.

Club Hockey at Ohio is totally different than any other club sport.  Part of this is due to the way youth hockey is set up.  Many of the players on OU teams have played juniors so they tend to be a little bit older when they get here.  Occasionally a player will make it on a minor league roster as well.  When you rank college hockey programs in the country(NCAA and Club), I think it is safe to say that our hockey program is better than football and basketball.  I know there are less teams, but all am saying is OU has one of the top 75 hockey programs in the country.  It also has a big following and its fundraising efforts contribute considerably to the university.  It also has a large "local" following and provides a cornerstone for youth hockey in the region.  I think Parkersburg youth hockey teams call Bird home...

For a team that "isn't real" we sure have a storied history. Go to Bird Arena and you'll see countless Conference Championship banners, as well as four National Championship banners. You'll see a student section (Gang Green) that, while not as big as OZone, is comprised of students who PAY to go see a sport they truly love. And you'll see skill level good enough to send a player from our roster last year, and Athens native to boot, over to Italy to represent Team USA in the World University games. So, for a "fake" team, I'd say we're pretty good :) and sorry if I sound upset, but I'm going into my third year as Gang Green president (and second year on the OZone board) so I'm passionate about this.

Well, OHIO went the opposite direction as Penn State. Ohio once had varsity hockey and was in the same league as Ohio State, Michigan Tech, and other known powers of the day. There was even a trophy for the winner of the yearly series between OSU and OU. It was called the "CatEye" trophy, if I recall correctly. President Sowle, as one of a series of bad decisions, did away with varsity hockey. The man also eliminated the School of Architecture at a time the demand for architects was increasing. He tried to eliminate the College of Engineering -- again when the demand for engineers was increasing and in this case the supply decreasing. Lucky, he wasn't successful in the latter case.

Hockey probably would've been done away with later anyway.

I don't want to be in Miami's position with three major programs and not enough money to go around.
