I'm surprised that no one has brought up to topic of the new NCAA FBS rule prohibiting satellite camps for recruitment.

I'm not sure how much, if at all, it will affect Ohio recruiting. I don't recall OU holding any camps outside Ohio, or sending any of its coaches to work at out-of-state camps. I believe that OU has done some off-campus camps in Ohio, which would also be prohibited if the camps were held at non-OU facilities. I'm guessing that this rule can probably be side-stepped somewhat if Ohio holds the camps at its regional campuses.

The real losers here are the student athletes who cannot afford to travel long distance to participate and meet coaches out of their regions.

This is being discussed in the thread on the main page entitled "New Level of Absurdity". This will hurt Ohio much worse that most schools. Also, Arkley has a discussion of it on his blog.

Ohio can't hold camps at it's regional campuses unless they regularly practice there or play there. S

OHIO coaches work the camps of OSU, Michigan, Penn State, WVU every year. Little pocket change and networking, outside of the recruiting benefits.

Won't hurt us at all. After all, bcat2 has told us how respected Coach Solich is in high schools throughout the state.

Even if he is respected, it hurts because the coaches don't get to see the kids perform live on the field. One of the big improvement in recruiting in recent years has come from the fact that the coaches, after seeing some kids live, are able to identify some really good players that have been overlooked. I'm sure it works the other way as well - the players, after working at camps for various schools go home saying "these are the coaches I want to play for".

The net result has been a huge jump in both the number of, and the quality of, early recruits. Hopefully the NCAA will realize they went too far, and will scale the new rule back. If they wanted to say "no camps outside your home state", that would be reasonable. If they wanted to say "no more than x camps a year off campus" that would also be fine.

As it stands now, how many recruits from Cleveland and Cincinnati will Ohio be able to get to come to a camp in Athens? Not many, I would guess.

I'll be amazed and disappointed if this rule, as written, stands. At the minimum, I would think they'd implement a "no out-of-state camp," or better yet a "no camp outside an X-mile radius." This rule puts the hardship on the potential players moreso than the school.

Hopefully isn't too late for an amendment on this. Most of the top college programs aren't located in urban markets where the players are actually located.

Didn't someone give you your own thread so you could repeat the same thing over...and over... and over? Just once, give one thread a break from...yourself.

This story seems to be over to me. ESPN isn't talking about it anymore. I'm not aware of any elected official attempting to stand up for their constituents and push for this to change. Who else is going to change it?

My sources have me "betting" big that the NCAA is going to lift the ban on satellite camps by the end of April. Fingers crossed.

More on the satellite camp ban...

Article says Mountain West and Sunbelt are also unhappy despite voting for the ban.

There is no reason to not put a commonsense limit to these camps, something like a 300 mile radius, this would allow the mid-majors who find these camps useful to continue to build relationships and fan base while helping the prospective student-athletes. As well as allowing the mid-majors to work the camps of the big boys.

I could see something like this passing.
