Funny to read back through this, see how everybody thought Brunis was a project and a tweener, yet he may be starting or getting serious playing time as a true freshman right from the first kickoff. I wonder when the last true freshman receiver was on the two-deep week one for OHIO?

Thank God I was wrong.

Good question. I went back through game notes (only available back to 2005) and near as I can figure:
- Gary Fortune was listed as a backup at the Z-WR spot in 2009, although he was listed 3rd behind Brazill and Goulet
- Chris Garrett listed at the X-WR in 2006 behind Mayle, Fitzgerald and Norwood
- Taylor price listed at the Z-WR in 2006 behind Nwokocha, Riley and Turner

Who was the Nebraska WR who played as a true freshman but went home for a girlfriend?

Matt Donahue caught 5 passes in 2007 as a true freshman. Wasn't on the 2-deep to start the season.

Not everyone was unimpressed.

Actually, in my recruiting guru thread, I picked him as the WR prospect who would make the biggest impact. For that matter, I picked Pruehs as the biggest impact OL, and he may start.

Matt's season was cut short at Ohio with a broken hand, if I recall correctly. When he returned to Nebraska, he originally wasn't going to play football, but after the coaching change to Pelini, he walked on. He made an impact in the Spring game, but then was in a tragic car accident that ended his career.

I think it's pretty safe to say Chris Garrett deserved the playing time he got as a frosh:

From Ohiobobcats.com:

2006: Played in all 14 games, starting three ... Named a Third-Team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News as a return specialist ... Named All-MAC as a return man by Collegefootballnews.com ... Led the MAC and ranked seventh in the nation with a 14.5 punt return average, the second-highest school history ... Ranked second in Bobcat single-season punt return yards ledger with 378 ... Set a school record with an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown against Western Michigan ... Averaged 25.0 yards on 10 kick returns ... Named MAC East Division Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Rutgers & Western Michigan) ... Also ran the ball 19 times for 97 yards and caught 10 passes for 84 yards ... Tied for the team lead with 13 plays of 20 yards or longer, including five punt returns ... Had 90 yards on three punt returns at Rutgers ... His yardage total ranked 10th on the Bobcat single-game ledger, while his 30.0-yard average was fourth ... Made his first career reception against Western Michigan ... Had a season best two catches against Buffalo ... Broke off a 59-yard run at Miami

And one more that ended up somewhere else. In 6 games over two years for Ohio, he had 12 receptions for 126 yards, then transferred to Davenport University. There, in 2016 he played in 3 games, where he had 6 receptions for 83 yards.

Ohio coaches only play their guys period. You could be more talented but if you get in their doghouse its bye bye. Plenty of guys have slipped thru Ohio’s fingers due to the OU coaches “favoritism” methods but hey who are we right?

In reality though, isn't that true of most coaches? It's certainly true in the NFL.

That may happen sometimes but based on how little action Brunis saw after he transferred down, I think he probably just didn't develop the way coaches hoped for one reason or another (very possibly something completely out of everyone's control such as an injury). I don't think favoritism had anything to do with Brunis not playing much.

Not one of these guys strike me as slipping through Ohio's fingers. You can make an argument for Tate Leavitt (but if you don't qualify, you don't qualify) or any number of guys who committed then signed with someone bigger, but let's not mistake these other guys for prom queens.

All coaches are going to pick the players that they think give the team the best chance of winning. All players are going to think they should be starting. This is a debate that will always exist. It is inevitable that some players are going to leave, hoping to find more personal success elsewhere. If the coaching staff is missing great players, and never giving them a chance to excel, it is inevitable that you will find players who leave, and who become stars for some other team, and you are going to find that fairly often. Has that happened?

Surprisingly, I haven't found even one player that went on to great success somewhere else. I can only even think of one player who went on to become a IA starter, and that is Ronnie Bell, who left to play at Georgia State, and who played in 2012-14 for them, starting in 2013:
https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/players/207456 /

He completed 49.7% of his passes, with 18 TDs and 21 Interceptions for a pass efficiency of 111. That isn't great, but it isn't awful, either. It's sort of midway between JD Sprague (118) and Austin Everson (105).

Some ex-Ohio recruits who didn't qualify, or players who left Ohio for off-the-field reasons, did well enough in JUCO to win scholarships at P5 Schools. Leavitt was one example of that. Another was Horace Hubbard, who after an off-the-field issue, ended up in JUCO, then at Oklahoma State, though at Oklahoma State he only played in 3 games, making 1 tackle.

Frankly, the argument gets tiresome. A few players leave the program every year. That happens everywhere. Who are the ones that succeeded?

Brooks Rossman and Kyle Snyder are two who come to mind.

Kyle Snyder did have a moderate amount of success, but it was at SE Missouri State, an FCS school. I don't think I've ever heard anyone try to make the case that he left because he didn't get a fair shot, and that he should have started in 2011 ahead of Tettleton. Edit - NVM - In the time I was typing this, I just did get exactly that.

For that matter, Mark Petruziello also had success at a lower level, at JCU:
http://www.news-herald.com/article/HR/20080906/NEWS/30906...

Brooks Rossman is the best example yet. He went on and was very successful at Kansas State. So, there we do have an example of a player who left, and ended up with success at a P5 level. Nevertheless, I don't recall anyone who believed he didn't get a fair shot at Ohio. Here are his stats:
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/brooks-rossm...

At Ohio he made 88% of his extra points, not great, and 42% of his field goals. Under Solich he was 1 for 5 on field goals (1-2 from under 30 yards, 0-2 from 30-39, and 0-1 from 40-49). Matt Miller, the punter, took over late in the year, and was 3-4 on field goals. I don't think Miller took over because he was a "Coach's favorite". I think he got the job because he performed it better when called upon.

Rossman did perform much better at K-State, and deserved the job. He made 97% of his extra points, and 77% of his field goals.

I don't remember him being arrested, and I can't find any record of in in the Athens County Municipal Court records, but it could have happened. I just remember TT getting the start ahead of him in 2011, and having an outstanding year, following which, Snyder decided to go elsewhere.

Here are his stats at SEMO:
2013 as a Junior he played in 7 games, was 49-105 for 615 yards, with 6 TDs and 5 interceptions, a pass efficiency of 107. In 2014 as a Senior, he finally came into his own, and had an excellent year. He was 196-320 for 2582 yards, with 23 TDs and 14 interceptions, a big jump in pass efficiency to 144. He also had 180 carries for 798 yards and 9 TDs.

I can certainly understand why TT got the start ahead of him, and I can also understand why he didn't want to spend 4 years behind TT waiting for 2014.

I don’t recall a Snyder off field incident. I believe he felt he would be behind T2 his time at Ohio and went to SEMO because of staff connections to Tony Samuel.
