I agree you've got to take a general approach. The Ohio staff is evaluating based on what they like to see in a player. That is what every other MAC program is doing though. The rankings (ratings) then do serve value as to who is generally signing a better group. Other variables you have got to take into consideration are the quality of competition played. WMU and CMU over the years have picked up highly rated recruits from Michigan but what is Michigan H.S. football compared to Ohio H.S. football. The state of Michigan has 30 recruits that are 3+ Star caliber while Ohio has 82 that are 3 star caliber with 4-5 heading to Ohio. WMU has 2 guys who are 3 star from Michigan. Evaluating how well Ohio is recruiting instate compared to MAC peers, the best football state in the Midwest paints completely a different story than taking the average of the stars. Ohio's class is exceeding the other instate MAC schools and comparable to WMU's when factoring in the depth of those states.

There are a lot of intangibles that go into it, and I don't mean on the field. The coaches have to evaluate a player's attitude and personality as well.

On the topic of Western Michigan's perennial 3 star heavy classes, lets take a look at this year's Jay Harris. Hes rated a 3 star by Rivals, 247, and ESPN. Jay originally committed to Michigan State, but they revoked their offer after he released this rap video where he talks about doing drugs. You can also watch him smoke 2 blunts in the video (one in the very first shot).

Is this the type of 3 star player we would want to come to Ohio? I'd rather have an unrated player who has the field awareness Brunis has.

Yes Jay Harris has a fail on his part maybe it teaches him a lesson but you cannot compare him to Brunis athletically. Brunis is less of a risk we assume because he hasn't released a video but you never know what you're getting with young men. From what I've seen they're both from good middle class homes and the video is in bad taste but I wouldn't ax a kid solely off that.

I would ax him. The coaches will be committing five or six years of their lives to each player. The young men need to want it badly enough to do right, to behave in a manner expected. Their choice,

It hurts the program from an image standpoint, and from an APR standpoint, when they use a scholarship on a player who ends up being removed from the program for off the field issues.  You can never identify with certainty those players that are going to have those kind of issues, but you do need to try to assess character as well as athletic and academic ability. I wouldn't automatically axe someone for making a rap video like the one in question, but it would cause me to ask some questions.

In football, Brunis was first team all-GMC this year, leading Fairfield to a 9-2 overall, and 6-1 conference record, 3d behind Colerain and Lakota West.  Last year he was 2d team all-GMC. He was named 2d Team All-District for Southwest Ohio in Division I in 2013. Fairfield's two losses were to Lakota West (35-3), and in the first round of the state championships, to Pickerington North, 20-10.

Maybe he was overlooked because people thought he'd play  Basketball? He was a shooting guard for the 2011 Cincinnati Lakers that won the Ohio AAU and finished 10th nationally in Little Rock. Last year in the GMC he averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists a game, shooting 50% from the floor, and 40% from 3 point land. and was first-team all Conference as he led Fairfield to a 2d place finish. He just scored a career high of 27 in defeating previously unbeaten Covington Catholic (ranked #1 in Kentucky).

I know plenty of students here who smoke quite a bit and still have great grades, work out often and/or have jobs too.  I wouldn't be surprised either

The difference is they aren't dumb enough to take video of themselves and put it out for public consumption. That shows a serious lack of intelligence.

Hmm . . . when was the last time we had a two-sport stud.  I seem to remember one guy back, I believe it was in the Hunter Era, who played both sports for two seasons.  In his case, as I remember, it didn't work out fabulously well.  But, I have heard it working at other schools on occasion. Brunis would seem to be a potential candidate to try this, if Frank would allow it.

Man....I don't recall getting a commit and the entire thread become hacked with negative posts. This isn't appropriate for Herman Brunis to read.

I'm glad he is going to be a Bobcat and he should be excited to arrive to the campus of which we all have never left (mentally or emotionally).

I think OCF is recalling Thomas Stevens, a DB and PG if I remember right.  I also seem to remember him contributing more on the basketball court even though he was officially recruited for only football.  He was brought in to basketball after losing Fears, no?

If memory serves, wasn't Jerry Liebold pressed into service in basketball after playing football?  And I cannot remember Chet's last name at the moment but he also did some double duty.

All right except for your timeline a bit.  Fears was after Thomas Stephens.  I think the PG jockeyed back and forth with him and Zach Kiekow, who had an on again-off again relationship with being on the team.  (The Fears replacements were Antonio Chatman, Mike Allen, BWIV).

I believe TS had a pick six against BG, but he had much more success on the basketball court when he wasn't cramping up.

Also, around the same time we had 2 football guys asked to practice with the team when we had a short roster.  Not sure if they ever got in, but Keyon Ingram and Hugh Grant were part of the team.

All this is a long way of saying, "Welcome to Ohio, Herman".  One week to go!

Oldkatz,

Chet's last name was Feldman the one thing I remember the most about him was that as a punt/kick off returner he never ever called for a fair catch. Chet also played both sports for at least two years.
Adetunji Adedipi (Sp) affectionatly known as Tunji  also played both sports. he was recruited for football but quit the team to play basketball later into his career.

Stephens started nearly every basketball game his final two seasons in 02-03 and 03-04 and was the second-leading scorer on the 10-20 team his senior year. I think he must have given up football after his sophomore year. He's not in the statistics except in 2000, when he did have a pick-six, and in 2001. Those football players saw six minutes of game action in 02-03 and Ingram scored one point.

That is a great article, and has a lot in it that gets me excited, and should get Monroe excited, too. First:

Indeed, this is what I really liked about Brunis, and it is something several of us commented on. No, he's not "really tall", like Monroe wanted, but he goes up after the ball, and catches it at the high point, meaning he takes it away from the DBs even when he is well covered, and traffic doesn't bother him at all. That will make him very, very tough to defend.
