Welcome to the board, and enjoy your visit.

My wife (a non-OU grad) has told me multiple times that she's never met a Bobcat who didn't love the school.

Hi, DMull. Welcome to the community.

Like some others I latched onto Ohio through my HS guidance counselor. I wanted to get into broadcasting and he told me Ohio had one of the best Radio-TV schools in the country. I think they still do, although the focus is on more than just broadcasting these days. I'd never been to the campus when I start a little over fifty years ago (ouch) and like others fell in love with it immediately. Historian David McCullough calls it one of the most picturesque campuses in the nation and never fails to stop by when he's in the area. The most beautiful time generally is from April to mid-November, although winter can be lovely too.

As your son is watching some of this past season's games, he should keep in mind that it was a strange year. Long-time coach Frank Solich retired in mid-July for health reasons, so fall camp was a bit confused and it continued into the regular season. We're hoping for better results next season.

I have a 20-year-old son who is in his third year at Ohio. He had visited there several times as he was growing up and never really considered going anywhere else. As I do, he enjoys the small-town feel of Ohio. It's easy to get lost at larger schools because they have so many kids to deal with. Ohio is a bit more intimate and the people are very friendly. There's also quite a lot to do on campus for entertainment.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Ohio.

I'll give a little bit of a different perspective. I transferred to Ohio from a conference rival, Akron. Akron is more of a commuter, city school and doesn't have that college town feel that Athens and OU does. While I was a freshmen at Akron I came down to OU for Homecoming with my girlfriend and instantly fell in love with it. I started working on my transfer almost immediately. Akron was also close to home, but I wanted to be further away and live that real world college experience. OU will definitely provide that.

Favorite spots:

- Bagel Street Deli and Goodfellas Pizza for quick bites. Also, O'Bettys (hot dogs) doesn't get talked about enough I feel like.

-Casa Nueva and Jackie Os for sit down meals. Breakfast at Union Street Diner (way better than Court Street Diner in my opinion)

Welcome DMull, hope you and your family enjoy your visit. If fine dining (at Athens prices) is your thing I definitely suggest Zoe. Late night sack - Souvlaki gyro. Famous dive bar with music - The Union. Biker Bar - Smiling Skull. OU sports fans - Cats Eye. Star of India does good Indian. All of these plus almost all of the other suggestions in thread are downtown in a three block area with the historic and beautiful Campus Green at the southern end. Check out the west portico of Memorial Auditorium on the east side of the Green for plaques commemorating all the significant people who have spoken there. Ohio University and Athens are special. Thirty-mile Hockhocking Adena Bikeway goes right thru campus along river. I would be happy to provide what I know about specific academic programs if interested.

This article from 1965 doesn't mention the KL Series, says Rockwell was invited by the "residents of Bush Hall" to raise money for a scholarship fund, and the University refused the requests to bar his appearance because students are entitled to an open and free campus. Sounds like Rockwell wasn't please with the "derisive laughter" to which he was subjected. Some things at OU haven't changed in 50+ years.

Article also says Rockwell told the students they would be laughing out of the other side of their mouths when he ran for VA governor. He did, and finished last with 1.02% of the vote. I wonder how many relatives of the 5730 who voted for him may have been in Charlottesville in August 2017.

It was the combination of your Army experience and your degree from Ohio University."

I am the oldest of 10 family members to make their way to OHIO. It's where I met my wife - whose ashes - per her request - I sprinkled in the Hocking.

Here's my favorite Ohio football story. In February 2014 my phone rang. It was Coach Solich. He began chatting about the 2013 season. It was fun. But after 10 or so minutes, I said, "Coach, you didn't call just to talk about last season." His reply: "You're right." My reply: "So why?" His reply: "I want you to come to Athens and spend a day with me and my staff talking leadership." I accepted.

When I returned to my chair and sat, I started by saying I think I began thinking about leadership as I listened to my dad and older brothers talking about their military service. Dad, I related, was a WWI aviator who was shot down. My brothers were Navy WWII. One was an aviator, flying anti-sub patrols. The other was on an LCS at Borneo, New Guinea and Okinawa.

I then smiled and said my claim to football "fame" at Ohio was player-coaching an intramural team to the campus championship. That brought laughs and we were off on a discussion of leadership - of issues both big and small.

Six hours later - with time out for lunch - I was back in Coach Solich's office for a closing one-one. As it ended, we stood and shook hands. Said Coach, "From now on you are a member of our team."

He is a man who is easy to like and respect.

Couldn't agree more about how easy it is to like and respect him.

The best thing I ever heard about Coach Solich was from his Uncle.

My wife and I met him on the sidelines of an O.U. game, during his first season.

He told us that Frank didn't come to O.U. just to win games.
He came to "build a program".

I had Professor Sargent for J-law. He was excellent. He inspired me about the topic so much that I eventually taught the class both at Marshall and Murray State. Though I was considered an extremely tough grader, I got a lot of positive feedback from students -- often times years later -- about how much they learned in that class. I owe it all to Prof. Sargent and that class, because like my students, I worked harder to get an "A" in this class than any other. But, at least for me, he made learning not only challenging but fun. He had kind of an excitement and enthusiasm for the subject that was infectious. When you look back on certain classes and certain professors, it's interesting in hindsight how you can see that they changed your life in ways that at the time you never would have anticipated.

As I recall, his grading was more like critiquing. He clearly gave thought when reviewing students'work.
