Just curious for those of you that live in the area or have been to Athens/campus recently. My understanding is that it's a phased in return to campus for students, but I was just curious about how many students and/or faculty are there. How are the local businesses surviving and adapting to the current environment.

I'm planning a long-weekend in Hocking Hills in October and will definitely be driving through campus then.

There are people here, but it is very strange for the start of Fall. I walk up Morton hill a little before 8am M-F to go to work. I've only passed 3 students in 6 days. In Alden there will be 20 students or so when I go to leave at 12pm. Just so odd. Feels like summer. Now I haven't been uptown so I cannot comment on that.

Probably for their legal defense fund.

Right now the OU campus and Athens very much have the same feel of an Ohio home football game before Grobe and Solich arrived. In other words, it looks sparse and feels dead.

Just got back from Athens over the weekend. Very dead up town, most food places are carry out only or delivery. Stores are open with not a lot of traffic. Most students are still remote only learning. Feels like summer still. Everywhere we went people wear their masks and no fussing (so nice compared to wear I live).

The hiking and weather where great. The take out from places like Casa was easy.

I did talk to several students and they where commenting how they haven't even walked on to campus yet except for the few that have to have in person class.

OU announced today that only 31% of undergraduate students will be allowed back on campus this Fall. The other 14,000ish will stay online. Strangely, engineering and science (biology/chemistry) students who need Lab time were largely left online while art, theater, dance and music majors are being brought on campus.

For the two weeks ending Aug 25 Athens County reported 13.8 cases per 100,000 population and was at Level 1. It reported 41.3 cases per 100,000 for the two weeks ending Sept 1, which included the first week of students being on campus for Phase 1. Athens County is now at Level 2. https://www.athensnews.com/news/local/athens-county-upgra...

Very quiet on campus/uptown today with Bagel Street Deli looking to be the busiest Court St. establishment. And, unfortunately for SBH, it appears the China King is closed. Several seniors mentioned that the bars are closing at 10 and are regulating the # of customers and their movement once inside.

Did drive by the athletic fields with the soccer team practicing on their field and the field hockey team practicing across the street. Can't help but wonder if other fall sports, football in particular, are doing the same.

Walking across an almost-deserted College Green, my 13-year-old son mentioned how sad it must be for college students, especially the seniors, including his sister.

I haven't been down since March, partly because of this factor. It would have to be really odd to be there right now.

Odd is not even the word. I have never seen Ohio University or Athens like this in my 34 years here. It is just so strange and hard to discribe.

Can a person go inside and eat anywhere there?

I'm not sure about most places. I've only had food delivered to me before I leave work to take home. OU doesn't really want us to eat at work. Most of us do 4 hours or less on site and the rest remotely.

Yes, this place is NOT sibera! Most all restaurants have dine in seating going on. New one getting ready to open on Court Street in old Cornwell building, many Frats out roaming the town in their cute suits last night. It's not normal, but it's hardly a ghost town.

So if I wanted to venture to Athens for a day trip, I could hit The Pub for a beer, and Jackie O's for a beer? I might have to make the trip after all. I occasionally need out of the Central Ohio region once football starts.

EDIT -- most important, thanks for the heads up!

There is so little traffic (foot) on Morton hill that weeds were growing big time in the bricks. They had to pull the weeds and have been spraying. Grounds crew said it was the first time they ever sprayed there.

My all time favorite is/was Barking Pumpkin.

Doesn't look like they have it right now.

Guess I'll be staying in N.J. this weekend. :-)

Depending on your viewpoint, you might want to be cautious about indoor dining in Athens. COVID is rising there presently: https://www.thepostathens.com/article/2020/09/athens-coun...

Because the dorms are closed. Uptown was packed last night.

Uptown and campus are night and day. I've been commenting on campus as I do not go uptown very much. I haven't run into anyone other than grounds when I come in to work in the mornings.
