The pitch of the grand stands in Peden is too flat. Even when there's a big crowd, noise is not concentrated on the field. The overall stadium experience is ordinary. Nothing too special. It's nice that it's an old stadium, and the new addition in the end zone looks nice, but I don't consider Peden as offering any sort of unique game atmosphere.

Having said that, I'm not lobbying for a new stadium. I just don't get your point that Peden is somehow unique and a big advantage. I guess that's your point.

Well have you been to Peden lately since they've installed the new sound stadium with speakers that direct sound down to the field level? Sight lines are better with the slopes in the newer stadiums but they feel small. You never get a feel that Peden has too many seats in it like most MAC stadiums that is why its nice at 13k-14k. Then when its packed with the horseshoe/bowl configuration it feels like a big time atmosphere. For a G5 program its a solid stadium at this point and good enough for the program's aspirations. I question whether more facilities are even necessary. Better tailgating rules and donor levels should be revamped because its ticking people off.

Peden is a quaint historic venue, but under no circumstance is there a big time atmosphere. Besides we never fill it anymore and won’t until we get better than 9-4. It’s been discussed in here for years about the decline in attendance causes so i’ll let that ride for now.( good student attendance the other day-it’s amazing what the results are when you give away something).
The add on sections just look so weird to me, they look so out of place and makes the stadium
disjointed. They’re upgrading it some, but it’s still antiquated in so many ways. Crumbling concrete, rusty pipes, and cracking paint all need updated. Since parts have been falling off, I’m not sure how “solid” it is. LOL. We can enjoy it what what is is because that’s all we got, but it doesn’t scream 21st century D-1 football to me.

Do you go to games at Peden stadium? Were you at games like Miami in 2015 when over 25,000 were in the stands? Do you go to attend games at other stadiums? I go to Navy games once in a while. They have 34,000 seats. When packed the atmosphere is not much different than Peden but when the crowd is low its cavernous. How is Peden not 21st century with the landscaping, press tower and sook center with a modern IPF siting right behind it? Granted it needs some maintenance but its an attractive venue from the outside and designed to flex for larger/smaller crowds.

Well I live 1000 miles away, but I do go to a few games there each year as well as usually 1 OOC game as well. Wyoming, NMSU, Minnesota, Missouri, Penn State, NW, Kansas, UMass to name a few as well as quite a few MAC sites so I kinda get the experience thing to compare to. I will say that I went to a UC Davis (FCS) game a few years back and it beat our vibe. Sook is nice and I usually use that when I’m there. Just walk under the stands and I get the feel of a prison(dark, musty) not a modern stadium. The indoor practice facility looks okay, but it’s pretty basic compared to others being built these days. That’s probably okay for us. And the flying stands just don’t make it look out of place to me. Makes it look like a put together place not seamless. The press tower seems just small and not a lot of inside seating for fans. Listen, I’m not for a new stadium and they continue to upgrade what we have with new scoreboard, sound etc. that’s okay. I accept Peden, etc for what it is, but I’m an alum. Not sure it impresses recruits.

Sook has been open for a very short time. You go back 10 years of games and then state you usually use Sook That’s interesting, unless you’ve flown in for every game, you haven’t used Sook that often.

Like I said, I only go to a few games a year. I use Sook now when I go. Just to clarify for those who need it.

Just curious, no problem. Think it’s great you get to so many games from so far away.

I’ve seen it mentioned that Coach Solich is on a year-to-year renewable contract. If that is true, how in the world does that help recruiting, which is the life-blood of any college football program?

I don’t understand how the program can continue with an arrangement like that. I was never recruited to play college sports, but I’ve got to think the potential stability of the head coach is a factor in the decision to some level. Having a 75-year-old head coach on one-year deals seems to scream potential instability. I doubt that IPFs, academic centers, and stadium improvements can compensate for that. And better talent coming in makes it easier to get better talent coming out.

If Frank is no longer the coach, does the program risk being less successful? Certainly.
To continue with the status quo, does the program risk stagnating well short of a MACC? Certainly

A Bobcat fan’s preference says a lot about that fan.

Recruiting seems to be locked in at this point. Get all of the quality in-state guys that you can plus a nice Florida pipeline. I'm not sure what else can be done aside take a few more gambles on 4/3 star guys at RB/WR qualifying and expand that walk on program into the northeast where there are a ton of little colleges and few FBS programs.

Franks age and contract situation have probably been issues for several years, but I don’t think it has had overall negative impact on recruiting. Ohio has seldom had top level MAC classes so not much has changed and if anything the last few classes seem to be pretty good or at least aren’t regressing. I personally don’t doubt that we don’t have quite the talent level of some programs in the MAC, but as others have pointed out, there may be other factors than Franks age or contract terms.

I think the respect that Frank has earned in his profession carries over to influence some players ( and or their parents or coaches), others not do much. Lord knows that most other schools in the conference have had a bit of turnover in their coaching ranks, so it’s not exactly s sure thing that any place is immune to turnover.

Just wanted to bring this back to the top after our 4th home loss and third league home loss for what some had said was the favorite to win the MAC. I mean, they did have a third year starter at QB, but guess that was a mountain too high to climb with just about all "big" league games at home.

Yep. Win 10 straight home games ... and then lose 3 of next four.

Examine the wins ...

Rhode Island ... yawn.

Kent ... who will most likely finish 3-9 or similar. And that was a dogfight.

Ball St ... you really think if the weather wasn't 1000% complete garbage they win that game?

And Buffalo ... who if they could make a kick would've won.

This season has been one big flop.

Waaaaay too much talent to be this mediocre. Hell ... not even mediocre.

No excuse. People can say players lost games ... and that certainly has merit ... but aren't coaches responsible at some point?

The best game they played was probably the loss at Pitt.

This is without question the most underwhelming season in quite a while.

They were projected to win the league?!?! Maybe that wasn't accurate ... but to not even earn a bowl bid is just sad.

Nathan Rourke rewrote the record books ... and never played in a MAC title game, let alone win one. Sad.

Greg Windham/Quintion Maxwell made it to a MAC title game. Woof.

This wasn't a season where one game cost them a title game spot ... this was a bleck season from the start. Highly disappointing.

I don't see how there's optimism that next season is going to be any different.

Gross.

.... and PS. How sad is it the seniors played their final game in front of that crowd?!? So undeserving. Why does the school not explore doing an early "senior day" during a Saturday game when people can actually attend and pay respect properly. Makes me sad that Rourke and Co. play their final game in front of 28 people. It's a joke. Thanks MACtion. I hate you.

We missed the guy I want. Give him 4 years at Akron and if we still have Solich, I'm willing to bet Arth as a MAC Title before OU does

That I would not put money on as Akron's a FBS wasteland. The guy at Kent might have a chance.

I would love him. However this is his first season at JMU and I don't see him leaving that job anytime soon for OU. Using this site - there are a number of guys that would interesting to see replace Frank and Co. Todd Graham formerly ASU. Randy Shannon DC at UCF. John Grass HC at Jacksonville State. Brian Bohannon HC at Kennesaw State. Brock D. Spack HC at Illinois State. Bob Surace HC at Princeton. While we're at it might as well extend an interview to Tettleton

It's funny .... but it would NOT surprise me.

How many coaches have wandered into this league and won a title during the Solich era?

Mike Haywood at Miami
Jason Candle at Toledo
Dino Barbers at BG
Dave Clawson at BG
Dave Doeren at NIU
Butch Jones at CMU
Turner Gill at UB
Rod Carey at NIU
PJ Fleck at WMU

And yes ...

JD Brookhart at Akron.

Laugh as you may ... but after 15 years, I'd take the field before I'd take Frank to win one.

Only Kent & Ball have shown more futility in their quest than Ohio ... and I feel more confident in Neu & Lewis than Solich at this point.

If not one of the last three years, then when? The East won't remain god awful forever ... it's been there for the taking and Ohio just won't take it.
