The whole thing is rather perplexing. As much I dislike the Pittsburgh Steelers, I seem to recall someone making a comment on one of the draft shows, that the Steelers have someone who pretty much just scouts the MAC. This was made necessary due to all the diamonds in the rough they were able to procure from our conference. I would think other teams would be on to this as well, which makes me wonder if they just overlooked any Bobcats or just didn't think they were ready for the next level. Hopefully, we will soon hear about some undrafted free agent contracts and or some mini-camp tryouts.

This isn't a surprise, to be honest. Lowery, maybe. White and Ouellette were undersized for their positions in NFL terms. That's not to say they won't impress and make an NFL roster ... but teams only have a finite amount of draft picks and to "waste" one on a guy they could very well get as an UDFA isn't a surprise.

No Bobcat was invited to the combine. That should've been your first hint that they weren't really on any draft radars.

They were fantastic players in the Ohio program and came THISclose to delivering a MAC title to a starving program the last couple years.

But realistically, that doesn't translate into being an NFL player.

I think some folks who frequent here look at things a little too much thru green-tinted glasses and get overly optimistic about the talent that fills out Ohio's roster. Can't blame them ... it's called being a fan ... even if it's being unrealistic sometimes.

Ohio has had a decent track record in the draft the last few years ... and have sprinkled some guys across the league. But it seems every year, you get on this board and read about how 5-7 guys should be drafted from Ohio. That's just not realistic. One, maybe two a year is more realistic ... but zero shouldn't come as a huge shocker.

I agree with what you are saying here. I don't think anyone really expects multiple guys to be drafted. I think they think 5-7 guys could be considered, and they hope one or maybe two get drafted. I think going in this year, based on the buzz, the expectation was that Lowery might be drafted in Round 7, and if not, he would get a UDFA contract, which is what happened. That White also got a UDFA contract is not surprising, either.

Really, the only disappointment I had was that AJ didn't get a contract, but only got a minicamp tryout. He's a guy that's overcome barriers before, and maybe he will again. I wish him luck.

One other thing about this class is that I wouldn't be surprised to find, a few years down the road, that several of them have become coaches.

I am bummed out about Anderson and Wood. Anderson appeared to get injured at the pro day. Heck I am still bummed about Pruehs.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Another thing to keep in mind is the player's commitment to playing football as a career. Sometimes NFL teams may want these guys to make changes they aren't comfortable with.

I heard a story from a friend who was a former starting guard at Ohio State and played on one of their national championship teams. He didn't get drafted, but signed a free agent contract with an NFL team. After they told him they wanted him to gain 20-30 lbs to up his girth, he refused because he didn't think he would be as good a player at that weight. He got released shortly thereafter.
