I've always thought bowl games were interesting and important for one simple reason. Teams mostly play an 8-9 game conference schedule, with a few non-conference games at the beginning of the season. How do you compare teams from one conference with teams from another conference? The only comparison is when you have games between them. The early games give you some comparison of where the teams were at the start of the season, but the matchups are often bad. If the first place team in the MAC beats the last place team in the Sunbelt in an OOC game, you don't learn much, and similarly you don't learn much from a game between the last place team in the MAC against the first place team in the Sunbelt.

By contrast, bowl games are going to be games between the top few teams in the MAC against the top few teams in the Sunbelt, and then you finally get a direct comparison. Similarly, you get some comparison to CUSA, MWC, and the AAC, and occasionally, against a P5 team.

So, what games were there between the MAC and the SunBelt this year? For two relatively equal conferences, there were remarkably few games between them. In fact, I can only find one regular season game, where WMU beat Georgia State 34-15. Add in two bowls, with Buffalo losing to Troy 42-32 and EMU losing to Georgia Southern, 23-21, and those are the only basis for direct comparison between the conferences.

So, has the SunBelt passed the MAC? With only 3 games to answer that question, I'd say that we don't have enough information to answer that, but it would have looked better if the MAC had won at least one of the bowls.

I'm hoping the new coach will put some emphasis on winning bowl games instead of just going to them. They just never seem prepared for bowl games under Carey. However, Carey did win a decent number of games against Big 14 teams in OOC.

If the rest of the MAC doesn't get their act together in bowl games....our share of CFP will get smaller and smaller. And if the rest of the continues to lose bowl games....we should look at leaving the MAC. But where would we go? What G5 would you want to go to?

The MAC finished last in the performance pool this year is what the article is pointing out. I wouldn't draw the conclusion that its a trend that is hurting our program for a couple of reasons. First the performance pool set up is only part of the current contract. They may give more academic money for a higher APR next time. Second usually the conference with the best team has the highest amount of performance pool money so Ohio could pull up the entire conference itself with an undefeated season. Third the MAC just picked up a new bowl game in Myrtle Beach despite lack luster performance in bowls. Conferences run in cycles with bowl performance so the MAC will invariably have better finishes in the performance pool.

Whoa, whoa whoa, you might want to pump the brakes a little bit. You do realize Ohio has NEVER beaten a ranked team in its HISTORY, and hasn't won a MAC title in over 50 YEARS don't you?! So after winning a bowl game with more yard lines than fans vs a UAB team in its first season back from the dead, and facing a SDSU team in the midst of a horrible second-half of the season losing skid in front of another mostly empty stadium, there's now talks about how Ohio needs to jump to another conference??? Wow, just wow. You win two crappy bowl games that hardly anyone cares about in empty soccer stadiums against mediocre teams at best and suddenly you're too good for the rest of your conference?! This is beyond laughable.

I don't understand the intense frustration over the program. We all know its a small market G5 program albeit in a top recruiting state. The corporate presence is a limiting factor and not having all the players we need in the immediate metro area like UC has is a factor. Relative to the MAC we have some advantages with Athens so I think the expectation is we should have a good football team and there hasn't been a losing season in 10 years which is a sign of a solid program. We kind of blend the advantages of a lighter schedule, in-state recruiting, consistent TV exposure and G5 status together to have the team performing at a high level. I believe if we were to disrupt that formula it would hurt our winning percentage. CUSA doesn't have a TV package with ESPN and the AAC would be stronger competition. I want to see Ohio be in a position to win a bowl game every year and not have wilderness seasons.

What Wes said is correct. Most supporters want Ohio to be in position to win a bowl game every season. With Frank as head coach, that is what the Bobcats have accomplished. Does Ohio win a bowl game every season? No, but they are in position most every year.
