Ohio beat Buffalo (9-2) and WMU (6-5) ... to go along with Ball (4-7), BG (2-8), Kent (2-8) and possibly Akron (4-5) in the MAC plus UMass (4-6)

And yes ... those MAC wins have come by an astounding 48-17 average with Akron still to come.

The MAC losses ... to Miami (5-6) and NIU (7-4) by an average of 27-25.

(Throw in the 34-30 loss to UC for good measure)

Three losses by 4, 2 and 3 points. Just gut-wrenching.

4 or 5 plays from being 10-1 (7-0) ... but instead here we are at 7-4 (5-2) needing Ball State and BG to bail us out.

SMFH.

It's just so damn frustrating to see what should've been. This team should honestly be playing for a second straight MAC title and be in the Top 20 in the country.

THISfreakinCLOSE

Story of the program. Just can't find a way to get over the hump.

Just let you imagination run wild for a second ...

Beat Akron last year ... win the MAC title ... win a bowl game.

Score from 1-inch line vs. UC ...

Don't blow 14-point 4th quarter lead at NIU ...

Don't lose to Fiami ...

NONE of those things are ridiculous. All could have ... and honestly, should have happened!

So when people tear into me about unreal expectations ... this is what I'm talking about.

Is it unreal to think Ohio couldn't be sitting at 10-1 (7-0) ranked #20 getting set to defend their MAC title in two weeks? Is that really crazy talk?

I don't think so. And I won't apologize for having those "lofty, unrealistic" expectations.

You perfectly outlined why I simply cannot get deeply invested in Ohio football. Before anyone takes that way out of context, I still usually (this year as the anomaly due to family/game time situations) buy season tickets. I still go to as many games as I can. I still cheer for Ohio football. I just can't get my expectations and hopes up because THIS is Ohio football. You get hope that "this year will be different" but it's not. Why these truly inexplicable losses happen (Miami this year, Akron last year, Texas St at home, etc...) I will never know because I have given up on worrying about it.

Great win last night. Great effort. Too bad it was probably meaningless in the grand scheme of things thanks to last week.

Great great win!

I still think the Bobcats have something to play for, finishing 9-4 with a bowl win for the 2nd year in a row is something that Ohio football hasn't done too many times in its history.

But like others, I'm just left with a "what could have been" feeling had Ohio just beaten Fiami, and I'm sure the team has the same feelings (good on them though for overcoming that and throttling Buffalo!!).

I have to disagree though with BShot though; I just don't think Ohio's a 10-1 team. I know they were close to that (against UC, NIU, Fiami), but the fact is, they lost those games. And more often than not it was their fault they did; 10-1 teams don't do that, 7-4 teams do and Ohio is to me a 7-4 team, nothing more, nothing less. In watching them, Ohio just doesn't strike me as a Top 20-25 team.

To go further out on a limb, as much as I hate to say it, I think the best team in the MAC right now is Fiami. To beat the two of top teams in the MAC two weeks in a row, and to give the best team all they could handle before that, is impressive.

I like that fans are still dissatisfied with anything short of a championship, implies that the program is in a very healthy state.

But seriously guys, if your first move after blowing out a 9-1 opponent is to go back and dwell on a loss from earlier in the season...sports fandom may not be for you.

You're right ... Ohio did lose those games. It was 100% their fault ... and that's the frustrating part. Was their fault they didn't score from 1-inch line vs UC ... blew 4Q lead at NIU ... and got smacked around by Miami in 1H. All self-inflicted wounds.

But you're also right ... 7-4 is what they are ... they deserve that ... they've earned that.

Not sure I agree on Miami. Ohio gift-wrapped that game with a really poor 1H and NIU basically laid down last night. But yes, Miami is probably better than their record.

But isn't Ohio too? I think Ohio thumps Miami 8 out of 10 times if they play. We just happened to get one of those two losses.

And yes ... on the surface back-to-back 9-win, bowl win seasons are nice and rare for Ohio. Just don't spend a lot of time looking under the hood of those seasons. Guess you can just enjoy the shiny exterior.

Bottom line ... don't blow NIU game or suffer Miami debacle and you're in MAC title game. That's a bitter pill

You know, last night may have been the best conference win of the Solich Era.

Unfortunately, last week at Fiami will overshadow it.

For me the real stinger is the NIU game. We had them beat and let it get away.

I got off the job at 1 a.m., asked Siri the score of the Ohio football game and thought she was confused. Or thought I asked for the latest Bobcat basketball score. What a performance.

You should let someone with XXY, XXXY, XXXXY, XXYY, XYY, XYYY, or XYYYY know that, I'm sure they'll be relieved. There are hundreds of thousands of people with these chromosome anomalies that have very real physical and mental conditions associated with them.

This is true. These are very rare abnormalities. Nothing I said was meant to address the unfortunate reality that theses folks have to deal with. I think you know the much more common situation that I was referring to. I'm impressed you know about these cases, most people don't. I've actually know one person with an XXY abnormality. She was socialized as a woman and has lived, and continues, to live a very productive life in her chosen profession.

I don't want to delve into this here as no one is changing anyone's mind on the topic, but beyond what you were insinuating, I felt it was necessary to point out your "Science" comment while factually correct lacked the complete realm of possibilities. 1 in 500 births isn't very rare in my opinion. I don't personally have a connection to anyone with these issues (that I'm aware of) but my wife works specifically in this field of medicine at the NIH so I do know a little about it.

Actually, I'm glad you did point this out. While I knew this information, I omitted it from my original response for brevity. I've actually mentioned these abnormalities to others many times in discussions about gender and virtually no one -- except for medical professionals -- had ever heard of them. I usually get a puzzled stare. So, I was trying to simplify. My bad. In terns of the rarity of XXY, the figure 1 in 500 is not settled. It is an estimate. Other studies have concluded that it's 1 in 1000. Experts debate the exact number, but in medicine usually anything with an incidence level of less than 1 in 100 in considered rare, though, again, this is not a settled number. Medical science, as your wife well knows, is full of inconsistencies in terminology and statistical interpretation. It's not exactly electrical engineering! ;-)
