Can't read the article. Does it reference whether or not Athens was considered for this game?

No, it mentions Virginia’s AD Carla Williams spent four years at Vanderbilt as an athletics administrator. Also that Vandy head coach Derek Mason was a former assistant under Solich, and Jason Grooms served as Solich’s Director of Football Operations. There was no mention in the article that Athens was considered.

There is no way that would happen. Too much went into Tuesday's decision. To about-face and scrap the Nashville plan would be disastrous.

And what if ... because Mother Nature does what she wants ... the storm intensifies and heads back towards Virginia for some odd reason .... then they're screwed again.

Might as well keep it in Nashville where weather will not be an issue.

(Plus, I already chaotically changed all my travel plans to go to Nashville rather than Charlottesville ... so I'd rather not go thru that again, ha!)

There was no way Virginia was going to pay Ohio $650K for play a game in Athens.

So, negotiate the money. Is that not possible?

The 110 is not going... there was an attempt to make it happen and had support from the university, but UVA shot it down.

There was no way Virginia was going to pay Ohio $650K for play a game in Athens.

Which was why I suggested they play in Athens, and scrap the $650k, turning it into a 1:1 deal by agreeing to play at Virginia in the future.

I'm going to guess the $650K is a pretty BIG drop in the bucket for Ohio athletics. I'm guessing they are counting on that money.

If they renegotiated and play in Athens ... and scrapped the $650k ... OU would stand to lose a lot. Fans were not making plans to come to Athens this wknd for a game. And let's be honest ... Peden is only packed when out of town fans/alum make the trip. A home game would have been played in front of about 15,000 at absolute best is my guess. I'm guessing it'd be more like 10k.

Ohio was planning on a road trip anyway ... this only means they're going southwest instead of east ... pretty much the same distance.

UVa is the one who is hampered ... losing a home game, losing home field advantage and losing the gate the home field would have provided ... plus they're still paying the $650k.

There's a bigger picture to look at unfortunately ... and it comes down to $$$. As much as Ohio would have loved to get UVa in Peden, financially it just doesn't make sense.

Look for a change in the starting linebacker group this weekend. Should be more effective. We’ll have Hagan and Hudson back as well. So the secondary should also be more effective. Expecting a better defensive effort this week. Hopefully Rourke and Co. can get the offense firing too. Go Cats!

It's also listed as a 4:15 starting time instead of the 4:30 previously announced: http://www.espn.com/watch/schedule/?categoryId=64&startDa...

The Deuce has Georgia's game scheduled for 7:15.

I think you have a point there about the linebacker group. I could even see Senior lb Tyler Guillett getting more of the second and third down reps if someone isn't replaced. #25 generally looks like he has a grasp of things as he should as a senior. A ton of thinking at lb going on last week with the exception of the senior linebacker captain. I also expect Motley at cb to get more looks based on what we saw of the backup cbs last week. I have HIGH hopes for cb Hudson. I liked what I saw with the DL in week one: I saw some flashes there.

I saw virginia run a real interesting play vs Richmond and Indiana I don't recall seeing before. it is hard to tell if it is a pass with run option or a straight running play but it was very effective. They ran it vs Richmond on a 3rd and 10 in the 1st qtr for a 40 yard Td. QB in shotgun flanked by a running back. The ball is snapped and it looks like a pass play for two seconds. The RB and blocking te then release with no intent of catching a pass but, in this case, blocking the interior linebackers. It is like a QB draw but with a much longer delay before the QB runs. Once the RB and te are about to engage the linebackers the QB runs. Don't know if anyone else saw that it was pretty slick and unique for me

I expect to see Gullett start at weak side with Croutch moving to middle and Conner at strong side. I agree about Motley too, he looked good. I wish he were 10 lbs heavier though.

It's still a UVA home game and their band is not coming and they said no to ours even though the 110 had the funding to go. Too bad. I bet they would have put on one heck of a show.

The game was supposed to be Band Day with a bunch of high school bands, mainly to fill up all of the empty seats UVA has had the past ten years.

I spoke with a former band member I new from our college days and who plays in the pep band. He said the 110 is only going on the road this year to play at the Bengals and Browns games.

I agree, and it’s important to note that you don’t just lose $650,000 in this scenario. It would be closer to $1.3 million because you would also lose a future payday slot when you travel to UVA in the future.

Was just thinking.

Admission to the game is free.

What if 250 or so O.U. students, with musical instruments, just happen to show up.

They may not be allowed to perform on the field, but maybe they'd let them play in the stands.

At worst, they play outside the stadium.

It's got to be a big financial hit for Virginia. They're still paying the money to Ohio to play, but now it is getting no income while having to pay travel expenses. I wonder if Virginia has to pay Vanderbilt for use of the stadium? Either way, it's got to be a big loss for Virginia.

I can't see how it wouldn't have been better to play in Athens, even if it meant Virginia had to still pay Ohio. Maybe Ohio could have offered some of the revenue or some kind of discount in the payment (maybe it did). Either way, it would seem less costly for Virginia, but maybe it was worth the financial difference in order to not play a true road game.

I have the same thoughts.

What exactly is in this for Virginia?
-They still pay Ohio $650K
-They now have to pay for travel
-Who is covering the costs for the stadium use?
-They don't get ticket revenue (free tickets?)
-Do they have to refund people tickets for the original game?
-Who gets TV revenue? Virginia? The conference? Split with the MAC or Ohio?

If I'm Virginia, I'm really questioning this decision from a financial perspective.

A couple simple answers.

UVa needs this game to have any shot at becoming bowl eligible (6 wins). The windfall for a potential bowl game is well worth making this game happen.

BUT ...

They also know Ohio isn't Kent or Akron or some other MAC slouch. So agreeing to play them on a neutral field is the only way they would probably do this. They know that rolling into Peden (while it might be financially cheaper on the front end) would put them at a significant disadvantage.
