Was watching the halftime stream of the 110.

Sounded like the announcer was female.

Anyone know if this is a first ?

Yup. This team could lose to any team with a decent quarterback. Just wait until that porous secondary starts facing FBS teams. The offense will have to score a lot every game to win because we're going to be giving up a lot of points.

Can't really find it in the media guide but I'm going to go ahead and call it: 645 yards is the most Ohio has ever given up in a win. They gave up 705 to Marshall in 2014 and 615 to Louisville in 2013 but neither of those were wins obviously.

I wanted to take a few days to let that win sink in.

A win is a win, but there's no spinning this into much more of a positive than that.

Remember, some link had Ohio as 43-point favorites. ESPN had the chance of Howard winning at less than 2% and some on this board were chalking this up as an easy win. What we actually saw (at home, no less) was:

-Howard never having a "3 and out" series
-A Howard receiver with 223 receiving yards
-Ohio giving up 22 first-half points
-Ohio's leading rusher with 59 yards
-Ohio outgained in total yards by 120+
-A QB controversy
-A final-minute interception to seal the win

Other than some season-ending injuries, I'm not sure this game could have really gone any worse. At least there's a bye week to get things "sorted out".

And don't forget, they nearly scored on the first play of the game, but we were able to force a turnover. If not for that, things could've been drastically different.

Howard has a pretty good team, would be competitive against many FBS schools.

If it's any consolation, North Carolina AT&T beat East Carolina this week 28-23. It happens.

None of those programs were favored to win their conference. Three of them have been awful for several years or more. It's not much of a consolation prize the have narrowly missed joining that group.

I have tried to resist the urge to comment about the Howard game, but will do so briefly. I was at the game and want to give a shout out about the area in front of Sook. I stood at the rail most of the time watching the game. Absolutely loved it. As for what I saw on the field, I can only pray that we somehow improve dramatically for the Virginia game. Otherwise, it could be a very ugly game for us. Sorry to all of the apologists on here trying to spin Howard as a great team, but frankly they had three players - a QB and 2 wideouts. Other than that, they were not that great of a team. As for winning their conference, who cares. No offense but it is the MEAC, not exactly an FCS powerhouse conference. I got home in time to catch the end of the UC/UCLA game. I hope I am wrong, but if we play Cincy the same way we played Howard then prepare yourselves for an epic beatdown. Just my $0.02.

I was disappointed that our defensive front seven didn't run circles around their large and non-athletic offensive line.

I know this one is kind of random compared to the list of FCS upset wins last weekend... but University of North Alabama (transitioning out of D-2 toward FCS and having been rejected by the Ohio Valley Conference right there where they reside geographically) goes to FCS power Southern Utah and wins a road stunner in their first (sort of) non D-2 game. How about them apples, OVC?

It's far too early in the year to know if Howard is a Mid level FCS team, or if they will compete for the FCS championship. In time we will know.

What I do know is that over the years there have been teams that were totally able to take advantage of Ohio's pass defense, yet a week later another team tries and fails, and/or perhaps a year later the same team trues again and fails. For example, Marshall, in most years hasn't been overly successful passing against Ohio, but in 2014 had a field day. Another example was in 2016, when a bad Texas State moved the ball freely against the Bobcats. Then, the next two games were against P5 teams, a bad Kansas team and a top 25 Tennessee team, and Ohio's defense played tough, and after the horrible start, Ohio went on to win the East.

How could Ohio give up 440 yards passing to a horrible Texas State team, but then only give up 206 passing to P5 Kansas and 203 yards passing to a #15 Tennessee team? I have no idea. The only lesson I can take away is that each week is a totally different game, and if the Bobcats want to win twelve, they will have to bring it every week.

They do happen fairly regularly, just as G5 teams beat P5 teams with some regularity. Solich has, so far, managed a perfect 13-0 record against FCS teams, but his time may come some day. In the decade before his arrival, Ohio was only 6-2 against the FCS, with losses to Northeastern and Northern Iowa.

It definitely does happen sometimes.

There also was one FCS near miss last week. Kansas State won by only 3 against one of the Dakota teams.

Lowery and Anderson had a good week one according to Pro Football Focus analysis.

Kind of surprising but three Ohio players make the Pro Football Focus All-MAC Defense for week one.

Mississippi State by 9 at KSU?

I would put a bundle on Miss. State to win and cover easily.

Let me save you the trouble ...

Howard is NOT competing for a FCS title. They've made one playoff berth EVER in FCS and that came in 1993.

They're lucky to compete for the MEAC title ... a title they've only one once (1993). They have three conference titles to their name ... 1912, 1914 and 1993.

This is a below-average football program in FCS that hasn't been better than 7-4 since 1996.

They are not even an elite HBCU school.

They should not be on the same field as Ohio, let alone go up and down the field like they did last Saturday.

We better just all hope it was a simple case of being shorthanded by injury and overlooking an inferior opponent with a bye week on the horizon.

Because if not .... to quote Frank .... it's going to be a tough year.

Gimme a break, Bcat2. This is a message board, not the coach or players talking.

Or should we make Howard out to be some FCS power to make us all feel better?

No, but Howard has every right to try to build on their loss, and to try to win the rest of their games. Some years back, Ohio struggled with UT-Martin, traditionally a below average FCS team. Martin went on to make the FCS playoffs that year. That didn't mean that Ohio's game with Martin was great, but maybe it wasn't quite as bad as it initially appeared.

Make no mistake. Ohio is going to have to improve a lot, on both sides of the ball, in order to be the team we want them to be. Still, it was a win, and now we move on to the next game, and hope for another one at Virginia.

Similarly, Howard needs to continue to improve as well. I believe that in most years the FCS champion would beat the MAC champion. Looking at the FCS championship tournament from last year, it appears that Howard's conference didn't even get an entry. NC A&T went undefeated at 12-0 and didn't make the playoffs? How can that even happen?
