OU RBs rated #4 in MAC by Steele.

With the RB that Steele considers the best in the MAC, and yet only the fourth best RB group, that strongly indicates that he isn't super impressed with the backups. Remember that Irons didn't play in 2017, so if someone doesn't follow the program closely, they won't know who he is, other than his stats. From the outside, here is how it looks:
Irons 637 yards on 128 carries, 4.98/carry, 9 TDs
Ross 211 yards on 54 carries, 3.9/carry, 3 TDs
Irons has decent stats, but nothing to make you think that he has the potential to have a really awesome season, which I think he does. He sees the field very well, and he's fast, so he's very dangerous after he gets by the line of scrimmage. Dorian Brown had those same traits, and racked up over 600 yards and a 6.1 yard/carry average. Last year the offensive line was very good, so Brown ran wild in a few games.

This year I think the offensive line will be even better, and I think that plays really well into Irons' strengths, and he's going to surprise some people, including Steele. I have always been a believer that Irons has major potential, and I think this year he's going to unleash it. He's got nothing to lose, and no reason to hold back. I expect him to run low into first contact, and if he breaks through, and he often will, he'll use his speed and ability to see the field to make big plays happen.

In my opinion, the tandem of Ouellette and Irons is going to be a load for other teams to stop, and both are going to get some serious yards this year. After those two pound on opposing defense, the smaller, fast Ross will also get some yards.

good thoughts. I hope with this year's rule re the redshirt can still play 4 games, that Ross is able to sneak in a redshirt season with AJ and Irons. This looks like Ross' only real chance for a redshirt season and I really like him getting one more year to grow.

2018 Ohio Bobcats preseason football highlights as reported in Phil Steele's 2018 College Football Preview Magazine. Contains SPOILERS if you are still waiting for the magazine:

1. Ranked 33rd in preseason top 40 FBS teams;
2. Ranked 5th on list of 'top non-power 5 teams for 2018;'
3. 8 Selections on preseason ALL MAC 1st/2nd team: Lowery, Rourke, Ouellette, Hagan first team;
4. Preseason MAC east number one team
5. Ranked 9th best Special Teams Unit in FBS;
6. Ranked 39th best Offensive Line Unit in FBS;
7. Ranked 53rd best Running Backs Unit in FBS;
8. Phil's 2018 Forecast: '...all 9 of my power rankings call for a double digit win season with one even calling for 12-0. They are a group of 5 NY day contender.'

Did he watch a single down of this team attempting to play defense last year?

My biggest complaint with Phil Steele's rankings is how low he has our offensive line. Our offensive line last season was a huge reason we finished 9th nationally in points per game. We return 46 of 65 starts from that unit, plus Durrell Wood, who missed last season after starting the entire 2016 season for us.

Found some averages for starting offensive line height and weight by conference last season:

Based on the latest projected starters from Arkley, I've got Ohio's 2018 offensive line at 6'5.45"- 314.8 lbs.

Fun fact: The term "Hogmolly" commonly used to describe the toughest offensive lineman originates from a nickname given to a fish called the 'Northern Hog Sucker' which is native to the rivers and streams of SE Ohio.

Rourke finished 2017 with 21 rushing touchdowns. That was good for 4th in the entire NCAA. I'll take the over.

There is always a break out player every season

Someone we all know about but their stock goes up several notches

I think it will be a young receiver on offense and I think Evan Crouch will be the anchor of the defense along with one of the LB/Safety rookies

Steele puts out a product that has some good information that you wont find elsewhere. However, he needlessly pads his team pages with history that has little relevance to the '18 season. Look at the Ohio pages. Most of the position group summaries begin with what happened 2 years ago. His analysis of last year is good, but he doesn't relate it to what it means for this year. His Phil's Forecast says very little about what he actually expects in '18.

If he stripped out the useless info, at the very least he could increase the size of his typeface.

The Two Joes on the left side with two young studs in Maservy and Kittrell to go with a vet in Wood and players with experience in Hayes and Pleasants -- this is our best line in years!

There is an amazingly stark contrast between the mess that Lightner left for Johnson, and the cupboard full of talent that Johnson left for Bart Miller.

Finally purchased my copy of Phil's College Football Preview for this year. I also would add it's the only one I do actually purchase. I will occasionally read some of the others in Barnes and Noble but never purchase, because I can read the articles in just a few minutes and have found them not to be as complete as Phil's.
I would have to say that for myself & the fans on this board, who are following our team as closely as possible, Phil's report really just confirms what we all know and feel about the upcoming season.
He did state that he thought we could go undefeated, which I agree if the following was to happen; 1) injuries are at a minimum, 2) turnovers are substantially reduced & 3) our passing completions % increases.
I have to give Jason Arkley a shout out for his great coverage and call outs that helps us to stay informed on our team.
