First Game in Peden (née Ohio Stadium) 1929

While doing some research on another matter, I cam across this page from the Ohio student newspaper, The Green and White, from 9 Oct 1929. I thought some of you would enjoy reading it, so I decided to post it here.

On the opposite page there was a column suggesting that Ohio add two raised, crescent shaped seating areas on the south end of the stadium and a large mound of grass obscuring the scoreboard at the north end.

FYI: BTW, SBH, the "other project" that I was pursuing when I found this, actually it was found for me by Prof. Cromwell of the School of Journalism, was the Arthur Carr project that we PMed about. I'm not sure if I mentioned it to you, but the Carr family owned some of the land that Peden stadium was built on.

I was able to research the message board posts on BobcatAttack after that game in 1929. Here are a few from that day:

A Money: A defensive back can't scoop and score? Tom McCabe really blew it again!

HerbieHooverFan: Can we be more creative with the play-calling? It's always Burke up the middle, Burke up the middle, Burke up the middle...

Ol' Roy: Liberty West Teacher's College? Guys, we need to have a better OOC if we want to compete for the national championship.

Great Great Uncle Wes: The Pep Squad is 30 guys in bathrobes and umbrellas? They need to be wearing fedoras and during pushups in the end zone. Embarrassing!

OhioCatFan: We need to do something about the vending situation at the stadium. Those pretzels are tougher than a flapper trying to find a dimebox on a Saturday night on Court Street.

Also, The subhead using the term "fighting opponents" is the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

OhioStunter, that was very good and I laughed a good deal reading it. However, you've got me mixed up with BobcatLoveNest. He's the one that was always complaining about the pretzels. I'm the one who complained about the sight lines to the new scoreboard from the Phillips Section. Back when I was a kid it was the box seat section. Don't know about 1929, believe it or not!

And this nugget about the game being so warm that the players (presumably played?) sans some equipment & headgear/helmets? Interesting.

[Rant on] Special note for Alan Swank: Take a look at how many times on this page Ohio University is referred to just as "Ohio" not "Ohio U." You see these references didn't start with Tom Boeh, or even Vern Alden, who considered the term "Ohio U." almost a firing offense. These references are much older, even going back into the 1890s. This is why, if it had gone to court, Cowtown U. was going to lose its shirt, if not its pants. The term "Ohio U." developed after A&M started the name stealing and it was a way to say, "we are not them." It was defining us by who were weren't. Very negative branding. Now, we have taken our rightful name back . . . and A&M has signed off on the agreement and all of their press releases about games we play against them in any sport now call us "Ohio" at the same time they keep their inane O-H-i-O cheer, and those t-shirts with the hands spelling it out. But, that does conform to the letter of the agreement, if not the spirit. [/Rant off]

What's kind of interesting to think about....while I am sure there was practice leading up to the game and it was approached in an organized manner...

In a lot of ways football in this era may have resembled more of a present day backyard/Saturday morning with friends game than what we see now. Players probably did some training but not like today where they are super specimens. Hits were probably hard but not the bone jarring, concussion risk that they are present day?

Certainly plenty of danger/risk of injury but a little less violent than present day?

My DeLorean is busted so no way to tell for sure!
