He will be moving back to defensive end as Indy will shift to a 4-3 defense.

Talk on local radio was very positive regarding his presence in the 4 3. THey had knowledge of the Ohio scheme and talked about how he would fit in the Indy defense as well as the limitations to his game that he encountered in last years system

I believe that Basham can be successful playing either positions. He will need to get a lot stronger. He played some defensive line this year, he got all of his production as an outside backer. Some of us made the point that is normal for a college DE to be converted to an 3-4 outside backer. Some of us said we knew his agent and that TB could only play DE, a few weeks later TB was doing linebacker drills at the combine. I think that we talk pass one another based on emotions. I think we all hope Basham does week at DE or outside backer. Go Cats and Go Basham

Colts drafted 2 DEs in Round 2. Not a good sign for Basham.

There was some discussion in one of the sports pages out of Indianapolis about loading up on Defensive Ends for the purpose of having fresh legs through out the game and providing different looks for other teams to struggle with. Unfortunately, that sounds like a ridiculous luxury in a league that requires strength in every position, and I don't know how Basham fits into all of this at the end of the day, if, in fact, he does at all. It also seems that Basham turned out to be more of a project than the Colts first thought he would be. It will be interesting to see how much he has progressed since last year. I certainly hope that he lives up to expectations.

I posted on the Browns' thread about ESPN's "Hey Rookie Welcome To The NFL".

They had a scene at the combine with former top players talking to running backs.

They really brought home just how tenuous any NFL career is.

They were saying you can never "relax" about your job, including having to constantly work hard on and off season. They said every year you've got a new crop of players as good or possibly better then you, trying for it.

Plus, the newer crop of players is cheaper which frees up money for other positions. So, working hard in and off season is a given. Not a problem for players motivated to be their best and who want to leave the game with no regrets. Players also have to produce on the field when they have an opportunity because that is an advantage they have over rookies/less experienced NFL players.

We are friends with a player who has gone from undrafted free agent to active roster to practice squad to back/forth to waived and claimed by another team. Then, from special teams to rotation player to starter until the head coach was fired. Then, to another team as a special teams player/back-up to starter. Just got his first multi-year deal. It's been fascinating to talk with him about the process and how you prepare yourself for everything. So much discipline is required with the football part of it.

This young man is smart -- earned his undergrad degree on time -- and has the leadership potential to succeed out of football whenever he wants to do so.

We have friend who was drafted in the 7th round out of Stanford.

He played 4 years with the Cardinals.Don't know if he was ever a starter.

Then he went to the Browns.Played a couple of seasons there.Again, don't know if he ever started.

Then he bounced around the league, but never did much.

What's amazing is how much "damage" he's sustained.

In college he had his one knee reconstructed at least twice.
He can't bend his fingers, has no finger or toe nails left.

The joys of playing in the NFL.

I believe someone said this would be an issue last year. Glad to see him going back to his natural position.

“Really, you’re doing the projection more for the 3-4 out of college because most of those guys have never stood up,” Ballard told the media Friday. “And I thought you saw that transition with Basham last year. He struggled early, but then you started seeing the [flashes].”

Much of Basham’s struggles to produce and develop stemmed from the fact that he had to transition from rushing in a three-point stance to rushing from standing up.“

It appears that the Colts are giving Tarell an opportunity to earn a starting position at DE.
