Don't know if anyone else caught this during the Army/Navy game.

This year Army tied a record for consecutive games without a completed pass.

Who did they tie?
Us in 1997.

Army did it by not attempting any passes.

We on the other hand . . .

We on the other hand, did not attempt many passes either. In fact, one year during the Grobe Era Kareem Wilson lead the nation in fewest passes attempted.

The 'Cats went 8-3 that year! Unfortunately there were less that 43 bowl games that year and Marshall was really good and Miami was pretty good. Back when the East contained the tough teams!

Not attempting passes in itself isn't embarrassing to me.

If you can run every down and win, more power to you!

I've seen crazier things happen.

+1

I'm actually quite proud of Kareem's stat. I've cited it often as a highlight of OHIO's football prowess. I remember when we did try a pass, we had this play where the offensive line would open up a hole, like we were going to run, but the purpose was to allow the very short Kareem to see down field and see the receiver he was trying to hit.

The stat they put up wasn't for consecutive games without attempting a pass.
It was for consecutive games without completing one.

For me,1997 was pre internet,at least for other then email,so I couldn't really follow the Cats except the score.

I wish yesterday's announcers would have put the stat in a better context.

You can't complete a pass if you don't attempt one!

I can't find the strong of games where this occurred. However, I am going to guess it was sandwiched around the Akron game where they did not attempt a pass. This was a part of a six game winning streak. That offense was fun to watch.

Didn't Ohio rush over 600 yards at EMU around this time? It wouldn't be a stretch to think Ohio didn't attempt a pass in this game, no?

612 yards as I recall. Three Ohio backs topped 100 yards.

The Bobcats that year completed 16 passes in 65 attempts for 411 yards. They ran for 301.9 yards per game and 5.1 yards per carry. The Bobcats were 8-1 with their only loss a 23-20 to a Kansas State team that finished 11-1. Then Ohio lost its final two to Miami and Marshall.

With all-MAC running back Hookfin suspended and all-MAC defensive end out with an injury.

One of my favorite games that I have attended. I think we attempted two passes. Why pass when you can convert 3rd down and 7+ yards by rushing the ball, at will.

This why I don't think I'd call this an "embarrassing" stat. I think the way this team was built and they way they were able to win games -- when the defense basically knew it was a run every play -- was very impressive.

Riz Buckman 166yds
Kareem Wilson 139yds (0-4 passing)

Was there ... was awesome.

I can't find the box score and stats, but I don't think we threw more than two or three passes in the 24-14 victory over Maryland in 1997. I was there, and I recall that our final clock-running-out drive was a series of running plays. I remember one 1st down that was so close that the officials had to use the credit-card technique to determine that OHIO had made the line to gain. Great game, with very little passing. Another highlight was the blocked punt by OHIO that lead to a TD. Maryland went out to a 14-0 lead before OHIO got the old option attack going. Just wore 'em down. Don't need to pass, if you have a good running attack.

Was Ron Vanderlinen's Terps head coaching debut ... after the game, he opened his postgame presser by apologizing. Classic.

I sat next to Charles Mann in the pressbox (former Redskin legend and local sports anchor at that time) ... he was amazed at Kareem Wilson
