Student-athletes do not get passports at the beginning of the season. Does not make sense to spend money on something you do not know you are going to use until the end of the season. This is an expedited process after the announcement hence why it is one of the first bowls announced.

Actually, since the Bahamas bowl was introduced, I believe all MAC fb teams ensure/pay for their players passports. I think this is done during preseason each year. Pretty sure the MAC "enforces" the schools comply.

Even Kent? That seems like a waste of the State Department's time.

I'm not sure if this is true, but if it is, it could date back before the Bahamas Bowl to the previously MAC-affiliated Toronto Bowl.

Actually, the law is the exact opposite. If you're flying, you need a passport.

Isn't that what was said? If you take a cruise ship, you need a driver's license and birth certificate? But if you're flying, you need a passport (to get back into the the U.S.)

I noticed some tweets mentioning Carnival cruises from Florida that dock in Nassau the day of the game at 10 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m., almost perfect timing to see the game, maybe with an hour or two extra after to enjoy other things.

Lonnie,

Could you point me in the direction of those tweets?

You'll have to scroll down to find the correct dates of Dec. 21-24, which at the moment are showing as cheap as $364/person.

Thanks. I found some better prices on Expedia. Don't think I can pull it off as my son has a game on the 20th.

It was only in the last year or two that you were required to have a passport to enter Canada from the US. Back when this bowl was active you did not need a passport to visit our northern neighbor.

Passports became necessary for air travel to Canada in 2007 and for all travel in 2009.

That's interesting because I went to Canada a few years ago, and no passport was required. The International Bowl was last played in 2010. I think there's a difference here between when they intended to put this requirement in place and when it actually went into effect. There were, I think, several extensions of the original deadline.

2009 was an extension. http://www.foxnews.com/story/2009/06/01/passports-mandato...

However, you don't need a full passport to travel to Canada. A passport card will do. It basically covers land travel in North America. It is cheaper than a full passport but you do have to apply for it.

I went to the Ohio at Buffalo football game in 2011 and could not go to Canada because I did not have a passport of any kind.

OK, UpSan, I think you are right that 2009 was the extension.

However, further research discovered this:

https://www.rushmypassport.com/blog/do-you-need-a-passpor... /

Ohio is one of the state's with "an enhanced driver's license." That's why I could get in without my passport.

I was curious about the enhanced driver's license because I hadn't heard about it. Can you confirm for sure that Ohio offers them? All of the news stories I find are from this summer saying that the Ohio House passed the issue: http://www.cantonrep.com/news/20170621/ohio-house-approve...

Here's an October article stating Ohio is still considering the option:

OK, I'm now thoroughly confused. Apparently the term "enhanced drivers license" is used in more than one way. We wife was told by a TSA official recently on a trip to California that the Ohio driver's license (the standard issue one) was an enhanced license. Our daughter's father-in-law, who lives in Kentucky, was told that starting in 2018 his Kentucky driver's license would not be honored for domestic flights because it wasn't enhanced. Apparently, what they are talking about here is that the Ohio license has security features that make it very hard to modify or forge, while the Kentucky driver's license and those from several other states do not have these features. The links that you provided seem to refer to an even greater level of enhancement, which require the citizen to go through extra steps to get a specially issued "enhanced license." This type of special license, what I'll call a "super enhanced license," is news to me.

Going to be fun for those of us in a position to go. Give me two or more bobcats, a bar and some sports - a gooooood time will break out.

My round trip airfare came out to just under $435.

I've found it is cheaper to search one way tickets and book each leg individually rather than utilizing travel sites for round trip deals. (I am switching airlines for different legs)

Flying from Cleveland I have a layover in Ft Lauderdale on the way down and Miami on the way back.

Cleveland to/from Florida was stupid cheap and I saw similar deals from both Columbus and Cincy. The more expensive legs were the quick 1 hour flight to)from Southern Florida/Nassau. The taxes on those flights were killer... Higher than base rate itself.

Seems like we will have a pretty good turnout of Bobcats. Pregame Bobcat Bash looks like it will be well attended. Lots to do in the sun of the Bahamas.

Yes, that must have been what they were talking about, but they used the term "enhanced license."

This morning I got an email from the Alumni Association about the game, including the Bobcat Bash and Pep Rally.

Thing is,the email says the pep Rally is Thursday,Dec. 18.

Doesn't anyone look at a calendar or proof these things ?

The game is Friday, the 22 (they got that right).
So common sense has to tell you something is wrong.

Thursday December 18th...of what year?? Is the alumni association using the Julian calendar? The orthodox?

Found a tour of a cigar factory in Nassau for next week. Event includes cigar wrapping class and rum pairing! Choice of two tours per day one in late morning and one mid afternoon and costs $81.00. Included hotel pick-up and return.
Found it at the Trip Advisor website.

Sounds like a pretty unique gameday atmosphere. No one is heading in expecting a huge crowd but I do think Ohio will have a solid fan presence. I've never been disappointed with Bobcat attendance at big events.
