I can't put those on Rourke. He was scrambling and keeping the play alive and threw the ball a tad second late and the corner came underneath on both plays and made the pick. The wide receivers have to get better separation and get better angles. We need 4.5 40 and below guys next year. I am still bummed about Smith not being in the NFL, but I understand why; he was not able to separate from MAC defenders. That needs to be a point of emphasis going forward while recruiting. We are very poor at WR right now due to injuries. Once Papi gets back on the field and Odum and Cope get better I expect we will have a better passing game. But it will still be secondary to the run game for us. I expect us to pound away at our opponents unless we really get behind by more than a score in any game.

Looking at our remaining opponents, I think that Toledo is the game where we will really need a balanced approach the most to get a win.

Rourke's fleet feet hopefully will always keep defenses a little off balance and allow the offense to establish the run but keep a good threat of passing going. This has to be one of the most depleted receiving corps I can remember in a long time! If there has been a year that was worse I cannot think of it. But those who are healthy have made some big plays and stepped up!

It's tough. Defenses at this point in the season have plenty of game film on Ohio and can make adjustments preparing for the matchup. Having Mr. Slot Receiver Papi White back next week is going to complicate coverages.

I think someone commented on this within another thread....

I don't see much separation from our WR's right now. I guess it's possible Rourke is throwing late but I can't tell on TV.

Some of our past WR's were very physical and could muscle balls away. We need some of that play.

Hope to see Papi back soon.

With the injuries at wide receiver I'm not shocked an inexperienced QB has forced the ball into some tight spots. The scrambling and throwing acorsss his body last week did make me cringe. The kid is a playmaker, we all watched that Juco film of him impersonating Favre. Having Papi back this week will be helpful. I'm still not sure why at no point we have seen Willie Cherry. They need help at X. I can't tell you how much more dynamic this offense could be if Elijah Ball hadn't got hurt. Practices I watched he was OUr best receiver by a long way.

I would think if we haven't seen a particular Freshman yet its because he isn't ready to play at this point. I watched him in fall camp, good hands but needs to get more explosive with his cuts. He was having a hard time separating from second and third team db's. Ball was our deep threat this year. Hard to take the top off of defenses without a deep threat.
