Thank you for the hyperlink Alan. Exciting news, especially regarding the Convo videoboard!

Not an expert on this stuff, that's for sure but at first blush $715K for the design and build of a new Peden Stadium scoreboard doesn't seem like a lot. Will the new scoreboard be a bare bones one?

That just means it will be 715x as big as my living room TV. That should work fine.

Is this replacing the current one? Will we still add one to the top of the academic center like some have mentioned?

750k "university spending" wouldn't include any sponsor contributions, so total cost would likely be higher...

Real journalists would probably have gone into greater detail in that realm, but the ANews is just a humble tabloid with an agenda against athletic spending. Gotta respect their commitment to always sharing half the story in line with their beliefs.

I've seen crazier things happen.

This should be encouraging news for those who value athletics, so I ain't gonna complain.

I'm pretty sure there will be harsh criticism of the scoreboards coming from those who don't value athletics as highly.

Would be nice if decision making bodies at universities could reach consensus decisions, but the differences in values are so stark that won't happen on many issues.

Jeff, there will be unhappy folks right here in the placement, utilization, design, something. What this board does best, is complain about things.

Ohio State put a scoreboard into Ohio Stadium at a cost of $2.4 million.

In 1984.

What I'm saying is: I don't know how much scoreboard you're going to get for $750,000.

I was told the FB scoreboard will be bare bones. Putting money into new sound system for Peden though.

Considering how easy it would be to advertise various products on a video board, I'm surprised they can't raise more money to pay for one. New billboards that I see going up are all essentially giant video boards. Would a billboard company consider installing one in return for the rights to sell a certain number of ads on it?

Whether or not it's happening, I don't know, but This is the kind of thinking that should be occurring with regard to lots of opportunities within the athletic department.

I believe it will sit within the confines of the marque that the current board sits in.

Okay, but how many actual eyeballs will see such a scoreboard. Not many outside of Peden. And actual attendance in Peden is certainly less than capacity, with some share leaving before the game is finished (and some share arriving late, no doubt).

Plus what are the demographics (espec re buying power) of those who are in Peden?

Toledo spent $800,000 on a 1,500sqft (50'x 30') scoreboard in 2014. Auburn has the biggest at 10,380sqft and spent $3.4 million on that. $715,000 in 2017 or 2018 dollars could buy a 68'x 30' scoreboard which would be huge for Peden. The scoreboard we have right now is 300sqft second smallest in FBS and so small that it is 12th smallest for an FCS stadium behind 55 FCS schools.

That I would think is the best place and could finish the academic center addition off nicely. Supports, wouldn't need to be behind a marquee from up there and road facing to impress those driving in. Existing marquee with a new smaller one (500sqft) ideally.

For a bare-bones scoreboard, perhaps.

If you want a really big video board, it costs.

Ohio State's latest scoreboard/ribbon boards cost $7 million in 2012. The Cleveland Indians' (colossal) scoreboard and ribbon boards cost $16 million last year.

We're getting a scoreboard that a lot of high schools put in, it appears. I'm okay with that.

715k probably a negotiated suppliers price because its design & build. When I mean build its not like hanging one on a wall, they'll need a crane to assemble it. The full cost I believe will be more and Schaus I'm sure has can tap into enough funds somewhere to finish the project.

Can it be engineered to be reversible, say on a giant turntable? Make it face the stadium on 6 saturdays, and face out the rest of the time?

Interesting idea. However, if it's in the north end zone, what effect does sunlight have on it in terms of readability. The toss board is north facing where ours would be south facing.

Prices are falling, but quality it rising, no doubt offsetting what would otherwise have been a drop, and leading to really high prices for really good boards. DPI is much, much higher, now, and sizes are up substantially. I'm sure brightness is up, too. On the whole, if you were to spend the same amount today as you spend in 1984, I would expect that you'd get a bigger, better board today.

Bare bones means the screen and no fancy marquee or anything. New boards have digital advertising. A 68' x 30' board could have 10' on each side for ads with the video normally 48' across. The marquee on Victory Hill is 40' x 30'. The biggest that could fit is about 50' x 20' with it overhanging the marquee a few feet on both sides. But I think the answer is 68' x 30' (2040sqft) on the academic center and 40' x 15' (600 sqft) on victory hill. For sound Utah is going with a surround sound system and a 10,500 scoreboard for $13.5 million. Good sound can be plenty more expensive than the scoreboard.
