Good luck to him. I really thought he'd get a better job than that. Minnesota was a power a hundred years ago, but has been pretty irrelevant for the last 50. I think Fleck can win there, however, and the West of the B1G is pretty wide open right now. Wisconsin is the power, followed by Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Northwestern, with the order varying by year, and then Illinois and Purdue bringing up the rear.

I'm thinking that this could be a good stepping stone for PJ. If he does well there, he could get a really good job next.

This guy is 36 or so, he has a bright future if he doesn't flame out. Just think how many games he could win as a head coach if he can keep up his entusiasm. He is one heck of a motivator and his recruiting prowess is off the chart. It will be interesting to see if he can keep that up at the next level. I think he will.

He took the wrong job, he won't be able to get the kids he needs to win the B1G

Maybe not. But you could say the same thing about 8 other schools in the Big 10. I think in due time he'll make Minnesota better and consistently more competitive. But he's going to be making $3.5 million per year, which is essentially four times the salary he made per year last year, and is still in the same geographic area as his family. So to say he took the "wrong" job, I guarantee he'd tell you that you're wrong. I wish him well and hope he does well at Minnesota. Not everyone likes the way he goes about things, but no one can say he's not committed or enthusiastic about what he does. I remember watching him play at NIU and it was cool to see him do what he did at WMU and help shine a little of the national spotlight on the MAC. I'm happy to see how everything ended up.

It's always possible, but I think the only person that ever coached there and moved on was Lou Holtz, who put in two years there.

They've never had a coach like Fleck before either. He is a unique coach as far as I can tell. I've said several times that I don't know how good a coach he is, but he's a heck of a recruiter. I don't think that he can continue to out recruit the other teams in his new conference by a star rating or more like he did in the MAC though. Motivation does go a long way, so who knows. We'll find out pretty soon.

The MAC's first Million Dollar Man lasted less than one month. Now he's going to make roughly 3+ million a year at Minnesota. He's pretty much set for life. Even if he screws up and is fired with his personality he will end up at ESPN of Fox Sports. I hope he succeeds, some rah rah guys are all show, I think he really believes it.

Think about the state of college football, if you get to this level, even if you're fired you can play golf or travel the world for a long time and try to figure out your next move. I doubt many of us could afford to do that if we got the ax. Again I wish him well, meanwhile the man who was the MAC's positive talking point in a post season of despair is gone. Who's the next PJ Fleck for the MAC?

It has a John Groce feeling to me. Strike while the iron's hot, for it may be awhile if ever that he runs the table with an undefeated season and the vaunted Group of 5 bowl match-up. Like Groce he is getting money that NO MAC school could ever offer and the other similarity is he is going to a dumpster fire of a situation with the University President and AD under siege.

Wish him the best, like Groce he sure got some national attention for the MAC during his run/row at WMU.

So......

How much is Minny willing to pony-up to get the Row The Boat trademark?

Cause WMU owns that....

https://trademarks.justia.com/859/39/row-the-85939783.html

I'm sure they'll ask a pretty good price in return....

Can Fleck continue without being able to use that in Minnesota???

Agree here. In terms oh tiers, the Big Ten only has so many jobs that will ever be open at any given time.

Ohio State is set. Michigan is set. Michigan State is set. Wisconsin is set. Penn State is probably now set with the Rose Bowl appearance and performance. Nebraska is getting better, though that fan base is always looking to be better.

I think Minnesota is a whole helluva a lot better than Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers or Indiana. And the West is the easier division. Fleck will do great there.

I think a better is question is would any new incoming coach want to use it? It's all over their uniforms/helmets.

FWIW, the WMU fans who I talked with in Detroit said that Fleck would only take a B1G job, or one in the same geographic footprint. They told me he was a Midwest guy and would not go the West Coast, and probably not to the East or South either. Not sure where they got that, but that was their perception. Therefore, when this Minnesota gig came up, I thought it a possibility for him. I doubt seriously that he's looking at this as stepping stone but rather a destination. [Alan Personal Info Warning] I was born in Minneapolis and have about twenty first cousins who live there. I'll be interesting to see how they react to Fleck. I'm not sure who he'll blend into the Norse culture, but if he wins, they'll accept his antics, I'm sure. [/Alan Personal Info Warning]. Personally, I have mixed emotions about Fleck. There are some aspects of his personality that I find appealing in that he seems to related well to this players, but his sideline antics remind me of circus clown.

Is Dilly Bar Dan still at Minnesota? I just want to imagine PJ meeting Dilly Bar Dan and how that conversation would go.

https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/09EcPVjiv28-Xsxy5On9Qe2k...

"I dig the shorts. And the Dilly Bar. I dig the whole ethos. Reminds me of an ancient Norse God or something.. Impervious to the snow and the wind and all the microfiber ions in the air harshing our Gopher vibes, Dilly Bar Dude."

"It's Dilly Bar Dan."

"Yeah. I like you, Dilly Bar Dude. You're the new defensive coordinator, Dilly Bar Dude."

"Dan. Dilly Bar Dan. Can I eat Dilly Bars on the sideline?"

"CAN YOU? The entire team will be eating them. We'll stock the coolers with'em. I'm gonna eat'em between Cross Fit workouts and my side hustle moving time share properties and my other side hustle selling AdvoCare!"

Appears he's adopted the longtime Gopher battle cry already:

"I look forward to meeting my new players and getting to know them as quickly as possible. I am excited to put together a staff and turn my efforts to recruiting, but also want Gopher fans to know that my wife, Heather, and I and our four children will be visible in the community and we are eager to connect with them. I am ready to go. Ski-U-Mah!"

During the WMU AD's press conference today a reporter mentioned they had heard that WMU's offer was actually more than what he received from Minnesota. She did not confirm or deny this, but did say that with the help of donors it was a sizable offer.

I was also mentioned that they do expect talks regarding the rights to RTB.

I would suggest that "Row the Boat" is nothing without Fleck. They'd be crazy to pay for its use. The power of the phrase was not the wording, it was the energy that Fleck lent to it.

In my opinion, WMU should move on from it. Let the new coach define his team.
