The last time was probably the Penn State game in '12. We were behind 14-3 at the half and outscored them 21-0 in the second half. Yeah, PSU had emotional issues that day that might've contributed to a second-half letdown, but we still battled back against a good team on the road. PSU wound up 8-4 overall and 6-2 in B10 that year, so I guess we could call them "decent."

As for this year's team, they've show a lot of character but just haven't been able to get over the hump once they get behind. We need to start fast vs Akron. I'd like to see a repeat of the Buffalo game.

A lot on my mind here. Sorry fellas. I have to say this too. CMU (OL & WR-Titus Davis, A. Brown), Ball State (QBs- Wenning,Davis), and Kent State (their Athletes- Edelman, Cribbs) are the only MAC teams that run Pro-Style offenses. They usually have more drafted players from the MAC. I do agree with Monroe on the fullback situation. Back in the day towards my senior year, a lot of MAC LBs didnt come fill gaps when Jason White or Mitch Morsillo was coming out of our back field to block for our backs (McRae and Owens). It gives up the play as a run 70% of the time but if the FB can catch then it has its advantages. I would love to have a nice 6 ft 250 lb FB right now on the roster for sure. It would not hurt to have that that set as an option. Sounds really good actually!

totally agree! but that would require Albin to rethink things. He's still trying to catchup to offenses from the mid-2000s by running interior screen passes....plays I saw Mike Leach running back in the mid-2000s at Texas Tech.

I was hoping to save the bag of trick plays for WMU in the MACC. But if the ship is on the line in Akron we need to pull them out then. Back in 2006 when Abrams blocked the punt at Illinois and I recovered it. Right after that we ran a designed draw play where Everson was in gun and Kalvin was on his right side. At the snap they both run right like a sprint out and Kalvin sticks his foot in the ground and goes left with one or two pulling lineman. It opened up a hole and I think we scored. Illini defense was fooled on that play. Also the jet sweeps to Papi and Reid. Then eventually hit them with the jet sweep to Reid who passes it to Sebastian Smith for the long ball TD.
Double TE sets with them running double seams and Corner routes and have our Wrs run slants and drags like we did when we upset Northern Illinois in 2006 when Everson throws for 300 and few TDS. Like I stated last night, most teams play 5 yards off of us and rally. We need to stretch the field and take advantage of our WRs height. Im not as worried about Akron (defense cant tackle and offense has no chemistry) as I was CMU. I knew CMU was our nemesis. And to honest EMU did the same thing to us this year as CMU. Gave our WRs space and said "You wont beat us deep or win the explosive plays."

WMU is the best of the 3 directional schools that play that scheme. We would definitely need to win field position and time of possession to keep it close. Their WR Davis poses a serious match up problem. Thats why we need Toledo to win out. We can beat them deep and they dont play that scheme as the directionals do.

When I present as fact 12 years of no season with less than four losses against every-year-a-weak-sched and no MACC in 11 years, that's mostly fact. And the 'weak sched' part is pretty darn close to a fact.

We need Monroes opinion because there is truth in it. We havent won the big one yet in Frank's tenure. Should we have won one by now? I believe we should have too. However, the chips havent fell our way. Are we on track and pace to be MAC champions eventually within the next 2-3 years? Yes, however the Reign over Miami is posing a threat with their quick turnaround and a potential 6'7" problem in Buffalo's Tyree Jackson for 3 years.

Now if we win this year and Monroe says, "Wow only 1 in 12 years. Is the next time we win is in 2028?" Then I'll say, "Wait a minute mister!" (LOL). But I value your opinion and we need your perspective.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not riled at all. Just pointing out the difference between fact and opinion and the reality that the two things get frequently confused on a message board like this one.

Another very real problem with a board like this: the anonymity removes credibility from posters. I don't know who the vast majority of posters are. Therefore, their strong opinions on the Xs and Os of football are suspect at best. It could be we've got real experts on here, or we have zero experts. Either is possible. Partly out of frustration about this very problem, some people are asking "Have you ever played the game?" as a means of gauging someone's expertise. I agree that answer to that alone is not enough to exclude someone from discussion. But if posters are going to claim strong opinions on things, it's not too hard to believe their credibility will be called into question.

I like the the Baylor QB much better than him. He is not a second round QB period. I appreciate your knowledge as a player, hopefully you are not the Michael Jordan of scouts. Just kidding

I've come to the conclusion that no one knows what the hell they're talking about when it comes to gauging NFL success at quarterback. Scouts included. Coaches included. Writers included. The quarterbacks themselves included.

Guys with exact skillsets diverge completely based on prior experiences and systems and situations and quirks and tiny immeasurables. Tom Brady gets drafted by Cleveland, he's a state senator in Michigan.

Bill Parcells’ system for picking quarterbacks landed him Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo. It also told him Chad Henne was going to be a great NFL quarterback.

The Browns have tried every type of quarterback with all sorts of experiences and skillsets and whiffed on every one of them.

It is a crapshoot. So for us to claim the CMU quarterback is going to be a sports management professional or starting quarterback of a Super Bowl winning team in five years are equally valid opinions right now.

Work ethic alone won't do it, or else Tim Tebow would be a five-time Super Bowl champion right now. Skillset alone doesn't do it or Jeff George would have a bust with an incredible mullet and mustache on display in Canton.

I don’t know. You don’t know. Guys who get paid seven figures a year don’t know.

It's maddening and it's hilarious.

Since the Browns are at the top of the list of not knowing nothing, it seems that Rush is destine to be a first round pick for Cleveland. That would be proof that both Fleck and Monroe were right with their polar opposite opinions on this issue. ;-)

Oh no. With this new braintrust, Cleveland will just start trading its first round pick away for future picks every year, delaying the time period in which the front office gets judged by its ability to draft.

It's the 100-year plan of Paul DePodesta and Sashi Brown. You don't get to judge them by their results until 2117.

Thanks ExCat21--a good discussion is what we're all here for...along with hope that OHIO IS THE MACC!

B Smith--You're mostly right as far as being able to predict a college qb's success in the NFL. For instance, didn't Tom Brady not start much at Michigan until (the end of?) his senior year--and no one pegged him for much success in the NFL? But I think some guys NFL scouts/execs have a better feel than most of us. I can't name who those scouts/execs are (Elway?) but some have some idea.

OCF--That's funny about Browns draft rush so he makes NFL but is a bust so we're both right!

I saw a bit of Louisville vs. Houston tonight. Both those qb's have arms a lot bigger than Rush of CMU it would appear. Rush may have better non-phyical skills but ya pretty much must have the big arm in the NFL (though, of course, that alone is not enough).

Yes...and Dak's now far and away number one. So, being third there is far away. Though, of course, injuries.

Yes, it's generally a good idea to follow my view on player-likely-success in the NFL when the likelihood is obvious (such as qb with underwhelming arm).

He has enough arm strength, he was very inaccurate at the combine. He was the second worst performer at the combine. He could make the Cowboys, he has more arm strength than both Cody Keller and Chase Daniel. He was never a second or third round draft pick. He dominated our depleted secondary and we forgot to wrap when trying to tackle him a couple of times.

Pump the breaks on the "3rd string QB on the depth chart" stuff.

He's an UDFA that was invited to rookie mini-camp...which means he could be cut by the end of the month.

They also signed Austin Appleby from Florida and I'm sure they'll have some other invites to training camp.

Rush is FAR from the 3rd string QB on the Cowboys.

Which is it? He was reported to have signed a free agent contract, as opposed to just having a mini-camp invite. A few people who are invited to a mini-camp end up signing a contract, but not many. Even then they are at long odds to make the team.

A couple years ago both Boykin and Blankenship got mini-camp invites. Blankenship impressed enough that he was given a free agent contract, but Boykin was done after the mini-camp. Since he signed a contract, Blankenship was invited to the full Fall camp, but he was eventually cut.

It's my impression that Rush has been signed to an UDFA contract. If so, he won't be cut by the end of the month, and he will be invited to Fall camp, where he could have three outcomes: he might make the team, be cut, or make the practice team.
