here's video of the 110 at TN-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3f68FNcAWE

I don't mean to sound blasphemous but I've been a little underwhelmed by the 110 the past couple of seasons.

Less than zero interest in the movie but at least they have a classy trailer.

Have they ever done something like this in Athens? Not so much with the troll heads but just more of a flash mob type of performance?

Wish they would've put the proper name of the band at the beginning… I wonder if someone from the University signed off on it?

I've been a huge fan of the 110, going back to when they were the "110 Marching Men of Ohio".

Can't say I disagree.

I think a big part of the problem is problem is the music that's out there.

There isn't a lot of new music that fits their style.

I don't know. I thought their version of Uptown Funk was so good it should become part of their regular rotation--along with Long Train and Ain't Been Good, etc.

Let me start by rephrasing what I previously said about the 110.

I'm a Drum Corps fan,so I really enjoy the 110's "standard" drill.
I don't know if people realize just how intricate it is.

What I think has been missing the last couple of seasons is a "wow" dance break.

I think we got a bit spoiled with Uptown Funk and Party Rock Anthem.

The 110 does a different show, with a new dance break, for pretty much every home game.

That is where I think the issue of finding music that fits their style comes into play.

I'm no marching band expert but I do appreciate that the 110 is required to memorize all of their music. Always seems kind of junior high when I see a college band (marching or basketball pep) having to use sheet music on their instruments during a performance.

Maybe the required time commitment isn't as demanding at schools where you see this/they are just happy to have a band etc. but I respect that level of dedication OUr musicians have to learn the music and choreography (is that the proper term?). It is really lame when you are watching say the NCAA tournament and there are schools playing their fight songs and you can tell they are referencing the sheet music. If you are playing in the tournament you probably played that song a lot in the regular season as you likely won a lot of games.

I think there's some truth here. The 110 had an amazing run there for a few years with Party Rock Anthem, The Fox, and Gangnam Style...so a little regression to the mean seems disappointing.

But I would agree that there has been some kind of a missing spark the last year or two. Uptown Funk was good, but I feel that everyone was doing Uptown Funk.

As I said,I'm a big Drum Corps fan.
One of the topics that always comes up at Drum Corps competitions is how "unprofessional" college bands that march with sheet music look.

Don't know if they still do,but I know the bands at some big schools like Notre Dame and PSU marched with sheet music.

A number of college bands play pretty much the same show all year,so how can you not be able to memorize your music.

It is also startling to see how little discipline some college bands have.Out of step, slouching, etc.,except when they are actually performing on the field.
Once the 110 gets into formation they are "on"

What I really find amazing is that some military bands march with sheet music.
That's their job.

I have a friend who marched with the Marine Corps (Commandant's Own) Drum and Bugle Corps.
He said they spent every winter at Guantanamo Bay learning their shows for the upcoming year, including memorizing music and drill.

At Tennessee the 110 lines were very crooked on several occasions. It was particularly noticeable when the first marched out on the field. It was probably more noticeable from my vantage point in the end zone than it would have been from other parts of the stadium. I was basically at right angles to them. I told my wife, "I don't think they are in mid season form yet." Overall, though, the performance was quite good and they got a huge applause from much of the Tennessee crowd.

While we're at it:

* Too much TUTM (tuba up the middle).

* Not enough two-trombone sets.

* Not enough imagination in determining new music .

* Director (and assistants) have been at our school too many years. Need new blood.

Good points, MonroeSquared. Too much nepotism in the band. Like you said, resting on their laurels. Haven't been ranked in the top 10 in at least 18 months. I even saw one poll where they were ranked below the Marching Facists of OSU. Unacceptable! Heads should roll. Don't give me old stats. Just use your eyes. Look at the facts. Take your 110 is God blinders off. Look at the naked truth. No two-trombone sets, and no tuba flying wedges either. We'll never get back to a #1 ranking with the conservative marching band techniques we've been seeing recently.

Plus we have not actually had 110 people in the band since 1968! ;)

If you want an example of a band not being what they were, look no further the Columbus.

OSU used to have one of the best bands around.
They had a certain style, they embraced it and were very good at it.

When their longtime director, Dr. Woods, retired, the new director(s) took them in a completely different direction.

They are now,for lack of a better word,"glitz".
Lots of "show",much less substance, especially their drill.

I'm not an expert on drill, but a lot of my Drum Corps friends are.
They said OSU's drill is now very "simplistic".Its pretty much, march in straight line, stop. But,that makes it easy to form the "stick figures" they now use a lot.

Then they add in "murals" and "special effects" (fire extinguishers for one thing) to get their theme across.

A lot of their drill is right off of the high school "Bands of America" circuit.

The one positive is that they have gone to more "popular" music.

There has only ever been one assistant, Josh Boyer, and he has been there for only 3 years... How is that "being there too long?"

If you've been a reader of these threads, you'd understand that this is a playful nod to the criticism of the football team/coaches.

The 110 has been in a major comercial, is now in a movie trailer and has a major gig in an upcoming major holiday parade. Not to mention the shear number of people who claim that half the fans and most the students come to see the 110, how does band day NOT sound like a great idea???? Put it with a 110 alumni outing and have a parade down to Peden for the show?

I mean the sell how many thousand tickets for the holiday show in Columbus, this would be even bigger.

Not trying to contribute to BTC's obvious snark, but I do wonder if the 110 would entertain the idea of doing a pregame session inside the Convo -- much like OSU band does. I do think that could be popular, and given the proximity to tailgating, could be a real nice addition to pregame activities.

Just food for thought.

Except for the cost of the who ever is OHIO insider beneficiary of the contract bribe for the 200 Security personnel we seem to "need" to have for anything Convo related......

Commercials, movie trailers and parades don't matter. How many MAC championships have they won?
