Secondly, I'll have to lean on our resident game plan experts here, but have to believe this forces us into a more traditional offense and less play action/run options with the QB, which in the long run may be a blessing in disguise considering Maxwell will fit that bill. I believe Windham to be more of a traditional pocket passer, and with that, by extension, would lend to more two back sets/two tight ends that a certain poster has been clamoring for.

Or we go the other direction and eliminate the QB position entirely:

Anyone still NOT worried about the QB situation here?

Sorry to hear JD leaving. Probably the right one for him if he's still feeling the effects of the injury.

I'm not worried at all. In fact, the QB picture just got much clearer. Ohio will be perfectly fine at QB this year. And a smart decision by JD, his health is much more important than football.

File me in the "very concerned" camp. Asking any unproven QB to lead a team to a conference title is a long shot. I felt decent about our chances if J.D. had been healthy.

As the day has gone on, though, my emotions have centered more on J.D. than on the team and its prospects for the season. I always wish the best for the program, but I am heartbroken for this young man. It is obvious he has given his absolute all for our university, and I respect him so much for that. Here's hoping he remains on the sidelines and can perhaps be a rallying point for the team. I'd love this team to win in his honor.

Best wishes to you, J.D.! You have done OU football proud.

+1

It's clear that he tried his hardest to be able to play this fall, but that it just was not going to be physically possible. Like others have said, I hope that he's able to be on the sidelines and root the team on to Victory!

Two quotes from the Nebraska stadium walls seem to fit JD well:

"Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport." -- JD seems to have all four of these attributes.

"Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory." -- JD covered himself with glory!

Go OHIO!

I'm at a loss of words about the news. Brings back the memories of games from last year that Sprague put on his back for the Ohio Bobcats. He's a warrior that will be long remembered by the fans at Ohio. The coaches probably expected this but let Sprague have his shot as returning QB. Windham was recruited to be the starter at Ohio by his senior season with big offers. He's got 3 months to give it his all for Ohio football and show next level talent. I'd be more concerned if Sprague had made this decision in May before the two 3 star QB's were signed and before Windham, Maxwell and Duckworth showed up for a nice fall camp.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

First and foremost, great respect for Sprague. He gave it his all. No doubt about it.

About the thought that all the news coming out of camp is positive about our qb's, well, all (100%) of the news from camp is positive. There hasn't been a single critical word written.

Sure, it's mostly from the optimism that comes before the first whistle is blown...but, c'mon, leaven it with a bit of reality. We ain't a team with no flaws.

Having an experienced quarterback helps, but teams can win without one. The closest Ohio came to winning a MAC championship was in a season in which the starter (Tyler Tettleton) began the season having gone 9-of-23 passing for 128 yards and two interceptions with negative-24 rushing yards in his career prior to that.

Really sad to see this happen. I always thought JD was a diamond in the rough and thought this would be his year. All the best to him.

This probably means that there will be more emphasis on the run and the option unless/until Greg more consistently shows he's a good passer. Glad we have a nice stable of RBs. He's got to keep healthy, too. Let's hope the backups are able to get plenty of quality reps vs TxSt, Gardner and Kansas.

Tyler was also surrounded by probably the greatest collection of talent that Ohio's offense has ever had. Do we have anything like that this year? That remains to be seen.

It isn't experience in and of itself. It's overall, mature, decent talent.

The question still remains about whether we have that.

It seems a lot was invested in Urban Meyer's comment, in the article about the MAC,(paraphrased) ...the team with the best defense and a good QB wins the conference. And I won't deny that the facts back that up to a T. But as my favorite mentor in business often told me, "son don't confuse me with the facts!"

One of those guys in the article also said (and I paraphrase, again) ...in the MAC, you have an array of talent that is not quite big or fast enough for the big ten and a lot of what has to be done is to get them to believe that they are.

Looking at this team led by a 5th year senior, red shirt, untested and often over-looked QB...I am thinking - what's that line from Major League?..."Scooter, this is starting to look like my kind of team"
