I've set up a scenario where OHIO upsets UT but then doesn't win the MAC title game though being ranked in the top 25 at the end of the season, with the MACC title loss being their only loss of the season. They also win a bowl game, in the highest profile bowl OHIO has ever played in.

The alternative scenario is to get blown out by UT and also by BG but still win the MAC East when BG stumbles against the likes of Akron and Kent. In this scenario OHIO is not ranked but has an elusive MACC under its belt. They also win a MAC low-level bowl.

Which do you like best?

Seniors of the 2013 season won 43 games over their five year run. The best five year run in Ohio's history. All I need to see this year is a season that builds on 2015's 8 wins toward a new record to be set by the seniors of the 2019 season. By the way, seven wins in 2013 was the lowest total during that run.

Actually 7 wins in 2013 was the low year in that total of 43. This year's Seniors need to win 13 this year to tie the record of 43. In any case, I agree that the Seniors of 2019 will ultimately set a new high water mark.

Problem is that neither will probably happen.

I would think that a loss to BG makes it tough to play in the MACC.

Just my two cents but a huge upset stays in peoples minds more than the MACC or a win in a minor bowl.

If Ohio loses out in the MACC, aren't they contractually bound to go to one of the bowls aligned with the MAC, unless they're the highest ranked G5 team (which is doubtful if they lose the MACC)? I voted for winning the MACC.

Actually, if you look at "highest profile" bowl, the then Advocare 100 Independence Bowl Ohio went to in 2012 might fit the bill when looking at the team's that have played in it, and Ohio wasn't even in the MACC that year.

Depends how big the upset is and how many MACCs and bowls you win.

+2 cents. Now we can let it compound!

I'm a little surprised at the number of people who didn't pick the MACC.

Because we'd rather argue about this stuff than worrying about the real underlying issue: both upsetting larger opponents AND winning MAC titles.

Here's a list of upsets and the upset team's final record:

2002 - Wake Forest (7-6)
2003 - Alabama (4-9)
2003 - Maryland (10-3)
2009 - Purdue (5-7)
2010 - Minnesota (3-9)
2012 - Kansas (1-11)
2013 - Purdue (1-11)
2013 - Iowa (8-5)
2014 - Northwestern (5-7)

These are all of the P5 schools Northern Illinois has beaten since the year 2000. You know how many of these I remembered? Maybe two. Northern Illinois once beat Maryland and Alabama, both ranked at the time, in the same season. Seems like a big deal right? I had no idea. I probably went crazy about it back then. Now? All I'm thinking about now is how many MAC titles they've won and how many titles games they've been to in a row.

Now, you could certainly argue that those upsets eventually led to MAC titles. Chicken meet egg. Egg meet chicken.

The upset win might stick for the more casual fan, but I'd like to believe that most of us on this board get more meaning from conference championships.

The way I see it, the MACC has eluded Ohio as a program for too long. I would much rather us finish the season strong with a MACC than an early season upset of UT.

My two cents is that people tend to want what they don't have. Ohio doesn't have a MACC, so they want one. Ohio does have some major upsets, most notably Penn State in 2012 and Pitt in 2005, so another one of those would be less important. Conversely, if Ohio had a MACC or two, but no major upset, getting one of those would be important to fans.

MACC hands down. That probably means we had a strong to quite strong portfolio of work that season. Hopefully it would be built upon along the lines of NIU and not a blip on an otherwise underachieving decade (see Akron '05, Buffs '08, Fiami '10).

This season, wins over BG and Toledo would be nice consolation prizes if we don't have the horses for a conference title.

My early money is on Western to break NIU's grip on the West and an East champ with at least 2 or more conference losses. Hopefully BG's revolving doors on coaches and players catches up to them this season.

Exactly.

Winning the MAC Championship is nice but what will resonate for this program, outside the MAC is beating a top school and being in the top 25.

What sounds better to recruits...

We won the MAC Championship last year

or

We were a top 25 team last year and beat Tennessee @ Tennessee.

**EDIT**
I'm actually surprised by the results of the poll.

Ending the season with a MAC Title and a Bowl Win, can't beat that.

Have you polled recruits to know this? I would be interested to know what they really think. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I would think winning conference championships would be more important to them that one win over 4-5 years over a Tennessee, Kansas, or Penn State. Conference Championships usually indicate more sustained success and winning, right?

I could be in a BA minority, but non-conference wins over Pitt, Illinois and Penn State have proven more memorable than the games in which Ohio clinched division titles.

Upsets are fun, no doubt, but I voted for a MACC. I mean, come on, people...
How would any of us even know what winning a MACC feels like when so few of us have ever witnessed such an accomplishment, first hand?

That's my opinion and yours, and I would hope the opinion of most recruits.

But I certainly don't have any insight into the thoughts of recruits, and I know not everyone feels this way. Hence why I asked if anyone has that insight (without naming names).
