It's anybody's guess, but who do you think will join the new Big12?
I'm saying BYU, Colorado State, Cincy and UConn. Or Memphis, BYU, Cincy and UCF. Or Houston, BYU, Cincy and UConn. Who knows?

It may affect the MAC because we may lose a team or 2 to the AAC.

Heck even NIU is being mentioned on the sports channel this morning and it's not the first time. Don't see that one happening for lots of reasons.

I actually could see NIU as a member if it gives the Big 12 better access to the Chicago market. That would be a shot across the bow to the Big 10.

Chicago is relevant to the Big10 due to the sheer number of Big10 alumni in that city, and the regional area sitting right in the middle of Big10 country. Adding NIU is not going to cut into that dynamic.

It may not change the overall picture, but it has to in a small way catch a few eyeballs for the Big 12. They also have alums there and NIU has a few as well. Not saying that that would have a huge impact, but it has to have a little. There's just a lot of people in that metro area.

Im still not on board with NIU seeing the Big 12 for lots of other reasons. Only would happen if they took 6 or more schools and thought outside the box.

I've been surprised at the amount of media coverage NIU has gotten in Chicago on the nightly sports reports for both football and basketball and in local newspapers/radio. Chicago will always be a Big 10 market, but what a coup it would be for the Big 12 to get a team in the backyard of the Big 10 HQ in Rosemont.

Interesting perspective on NIU's chances on jumping from the MAC: http://www.huskiewire.com/articles/2016/07/26/58c68ff77f7...

Well well well, guess who gets an opportunity to present to the Big 12:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17281618/...

I give the Big 12 props for at least vetting everyone and allowing them to present themselves, unlike some leagues where it's they know who they want and just say okay.

Why would the MAC want to expand?

The teams in this league are committed. And I get it the teams that the MAC has can be poached at any point (only teams they'd want to take is NIU, Toledo, Buffalo and despite everything Akron), but right now the stability is the best selling feature for the MAC. When I can essentially look at the meat of the MAC that has been going strong for 20 years in all sports (sans the Marshalls, UCF, Temples, and UMASS) there's no reason to add. Sure WKU and Marshall would be great gets from a regional standpoint. My problem in adding them is Marshall and WKU have always looked for bigger and better. To look at Marshall is how I would look at an ex that has burnt you before and now wants you back. I wouldn't take them even if they were a smokeshow of a girl.

Buckeye, you speak of commitment. Take bacon and eggs, for example. The chicken is part of the team, but the pig is committed.

Interesting analogy. How would Green Eggs & Ham analogy go......?

"Would you like them here or there?"

"I would eat them with a fox, especially if that fox was Courtney Cox"......wait I don't think that was in the original

"I would eat them with Courtney Cox, or eat them with Meghan Fox. We could eat them by the docks, or could eat them on an ox." Hopefully that was a little more original

They can say all they want about 17 schools getting interviewed, but some of those have no shot. I'll be happy to eat crow, but there's no way.

So the Big 12 decided to do nothing. It will be interesting to see where they go as a conference and who will be pluck for the taking and who's seat will be taken when the music stops.

I really have no idea how this is going to play out. An array of things could happen, ranging from a great plains league with the Dakota schools jumping up all the way to Oklahoma joining the Big Ten. That said, sucks to be Kansas basketball throughout this process as they are the one program that will be really hurt when this is all said and done.

I will note as well, having an open process screwed this entire thing up, especially with the Texas schools sitting there attempting to takeover the league. Karma is brutal and they might as well reform the old SWC and just be happy at this point without A&M and Arkansas.

I wonder what WVU will do. I would, personally, not be surprised if they tried to get into the ACC. It is a much better geographical fit, now that it's clear they UC and Memphis are not going to get nods any time soon. They are kind of an eastern outlier as things now stand. They would actually be a better fit in the B1G, if that opportunity ever came about.

There were several stories out here when the Big 12 announced they would not expand.

According to the sports reports,U Conn was really interested in joining.

Most sports people didn't seem to know about U Conn's interest in that conference.

Geographically that didn't seem to make sense.

Poor Bearcats...as I have said previously, they spent a ton of money to show their comittment to the Big12. I guess the jury is still out but right now it looks like a waste of money!

A different approach would be to organize the teams that were petitioning to enter the Big 12, along with the schools that wanted to expand, and build their own league, making their own new rules. I see it as something that could work, sort of in the same way that it worked when the basketball only schools decided to take charge of their situation and build a new Big East for hoops.

Ditch Texas, and build yourself into a 14 or 16 team league. Bring in UC, Memphis, UConn, Houston, BYU, Boise, adding to TCU, T-Tech, Kansas, K-State, WVU, OSU, Baylor, Iowa State. If Oklahoma doesn't want to take part, also consider adding Colorado State and UNLV.

Big 12 is toast.

My opinion, there will be 4 big conferences of 16 teams each. One for each playoff spot. Convenient eh?

In a perfect world, or my dream scenario, there would be 8 conferences with 16 teams in each one (currently 128 FBS schools). The Big 12 dissolves and so does Conference-USA. The teams in those conference fill in elsewhere. It would be nice to see all 8 conferences get a playoff spot, but I doubt the other conferences would allow that. If that doesn't happen, keep the playoffs at four teams and then make a separate playoff for the little guys.

Pretty much. And have a party guest who needs to leave but won't any time soon who cares more about golf and selling bbq sauce.

If Oklahoma and Texas split off in the next 10-15 years, which could very certainly happen, your fly over schools are going to be in quite a bind.

Your former Big 8 (which I think only 5 of them are still there?) were as much a a marriage of convenience and proximity as anything at a time where athletic arrangements were based on geography and like size more than TV dollars and eyeballs. Take away Kansas basketball and you have schools who are good, but not great historically in football and hoops. Just not the pedigree at Oklahoma State, Kansas State etc. Kansas, Iowa State, even Baylor and Texas Tech have more of a bad than good history on the gridiron.

How attractive would a significant number of the teams after Texas and Oklahoma really be if you got to hand pick your members for a new conference? All have their high points but also drawbacks-just like all of the potential suitors the B12 considered for their expansion. Oklahoma State would probably be the leader as an entire athletics resume, especially their Olympic sports.

I like that perfect world. In my perfect world, that would also see those conferences based on geography. Also in that perfect world, bowl eligible would mean 8 wins in the regular season. Now, back away from daydreaming, this ain't ever gonna happen.

Yep. It's easy math.

Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech to PAC12 to make the PAC16
Baylor and WVU to the SEC
TCU and Kansas State to the B1G+6 (you don't even have to change the logo that much!)
Kansas and Notre Dame to the ACC

Iowa State's relegated to the MWC because it's Iowa State.

PRESTO-CHANGO, and the G5 is the new 1-AA.

Networks won't be throwing out $ for that crap anymore. If they would, the Big 12 would have expanded. They can get still get decent ratings with UC, Houston and BYU without overpaying.

And there's the fly in the ointment. It should be very interesting to see what the next round of TV contracts look like-the money train might soon be a thing of the past. The NFL's TV ratings are in the toilet this year and the NFL is in a state of panic.

Some version of this is what I have thought since the playoff system was announced. The G5 cannot compete with the money involved in a super bowl type build up that has already taken over college football.

Except for die-hard Rutgers fans, the consensus out here is that RU does not belong in the B1G.

The criticisms range from their athletic programs not being "Big Ten Ready" (facilities, talent, interest),the fact that it will be years,at best, until their athletic teams are even competitive in the major sports, and that being in the Big Ten takes away from the university's academic mission.

I think we just learned that the networks are not going to just pony up more $ because a conference added more teams.

This could stall out talks of going to just 4 conference.

The Big10 is an academic alliance of top flight universities, the comment that the Big10 takes away from the university's academic mission is laughable. They are a mid to 2nd tier in the Big10 academically. Northwester, Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, OSU, Wisconsin, Maryland all are at or well above the Rutgers reputation in academics and research.

Speaking of academics the MAC is on the rise. Toledo and WMU added medical schools in recent years. A few MAC universities I would classify as duds yet but its become a solid set to associate with. The idea of switching conferences for better academics isn't a strong argument anymore for leaving the MAC.
