Speaking of the paw print....I have heard from several people stories about how Clemson had contacted us about discontinuing use of the logo because it looked too much like their tiger paw. While the people who told me this I don't think would ever have a need to lie to me I do wonder if it that was indeed a true event. Does anyone here know what may have actually happened?

Here's an article about the switch from 2002 when the paw was officially phased out. No mention of Clemson being an impetus for the change.

I'm glad the paw has been allowed to return as an unofficial secondary logo and I would love to see a throwback helmet, the Paw deserves to be worn in victory for a change.

I remember that time period very well as a relative new member of the board of the Green and White Club. Told "thomass" that he was crazy and that the paw would be back. Took a few years but it is.

The paw is so darn generic. It seems that every county in the nation has at least one high school that uses some kind of paw -- dog, cat, tiger, zebra, unicorn, etc. No originality. Just blah repetition and copycatism. Don't like now. Never liked it.

Was always a fan of the "paw".
But I really liked the "Standing Cartoon Bobcat".

I was really glad when they introduced the "Heritage Series" with several of OUr classic logos.

I am pro paw.

Replacing the stars in the burgee with them was a consideration, but eventually deemed financially irresponsible. Was also unwilling to deal with the unavoidable debate regarding proper angle and direction.

Wait?? Standing Cartoon Bobcat? Can we find an image of this? I have a heat press and would love to make that shirt....

Also what would you think about a commemorative game featuring Ohio's original colors of Blue and Silver from the 1920's?

I am not one to stand between a man, his heat press, and t-shirt dreams but if you wanted to support the Alumni Association you could order this great shirt. I got one for Christmas a few years ago:

Actually, colors were blue and white. The date of the change was in the early 1890s, when OHIOs first football coach, a graduate student, couldn't find blue and white uniforms, so he ordered uniforms from the same supplier as his undergraduate alma mater, Dartmouth. At least that was the official story that was released by OHIO a number of years ago. I have independently confirmed some but not all of this story. It's certainly possible that there was a period of time when some teams used blue and white and others used green and white. I doubt the baseball team, for instance, immediately changed to green and white just because the football team had a wardrobe malfunction. ;-). A throwback game using blue and white would be interesting.

I wish I could have found better examples. This is the first version of a Bobcat logo, aside from the paw, that I remember as a kid. It has always been a favorite of mine. Homage sold a women's t-shirt with this on it a couple of years ago, but it appears they no longer do. I would love a shirt with this on it!

The pictures look very similar to the "preRufus" mascot costume.
Don't know which came first.

I'd love to hear from a player from 1989, the year after we finished 4-6-1 (4-3-1 in MAC) and if I remember correctly had a lot returning but ended up 1-9-1. What happened?

I don't remember us really getting blown out back then. But, we'd just lose every game like 28-17 or something. I've heard that Cleve Bryant and his staff just weren't good at adjustments. So, we'd look good for awhile (a half, whatever) but end up getting losing.

Then, we chose Lichtenberg over the other candidate (some guy named Jim Tressel I hear) and it went from bad to worse.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Harold McElhaney told me Tressel wasn't even willing to interview with us. He considered the job a step down from YSU, which at the time it was, of course. I believe our second choice after Lichtenberg was Lee Owens.

Yes, but Mack's choice instead of Cleve was Glenn Mason. Ping's choice, as was mine at the time, was Cleve. Glen withdrew his name after he got the word that we were "going a different direction." I've often wondered what The Wilderness years in football at OHIO would have been like if Mack had been given a free hand in this decision. [Truth in packaging requires that I add that I wrote Mack about Cleve's availability even before the search started. I was really promoting Cleve, as I fondly remembered his playing days. But, as BTC will tell you, I'm no great football mind. Neither was Ping.]

You're talking about two different hiring cycles. Mack wanted Mason for the Brian Burke replacement and Tressel for the Cleve replacement.

Lichtenberg was also a guy who got the rug pulled out from under him to a sense. Many things that were promised him and were elementary to building a program were promised but never delivered under his term, Strength coach, money for summer school and keeping kids on campus during the summer, and meal tables were just a few. All things that have come later and have been instrumental in our successes over the years. Tom had a very good staff, guys who were great coaches and people and who achieved higher levels of success in their careers.
