I was told that people without Facebook accounts could not follow the link I posted, so here's a cut and paste of it, minus the Iceland flag:

=====================================================
Iceland 2, England 1

As my son just succinctly put it my motherland just beat my fatherland. I was rooting for the motherland! Some of the interesting post-game comments by analysts:

"A small country of giants."
"Fewer registered soccer players than the US State of Rhode Island."
"One of the greatest upsets in the history of sports on this planet."
"Biggest upset in football history."

GO ICELAND beat France!

[For those who don't know, my mother was Icelandic and my father had a mixed European background with a lot of English in the mix.]

======================================================

Perhaps, Ryan, could post an Icelandic flag for me in this thread! :-)

Less politically extreme people may prefer LeBron leading the Cavs over Oakland to Cleveland's first title in 52 years after being down 0-2 and 1-3 to a team with the best regular season record in NBA history, with a clinching seventh game win on the road.

In England they call it football not fútbol. Iceland beat England not Spain, Italy, etc. Loved the Cavs win, as I said in your "That" thread in the basketball forum. Room in my heart to love both.

Go Iceland beat France. Game on ESPN2, Sunday at 3:00, pregame at 2:30.

Hey, this must be the year OHIO MACCs and pulls the upset of Tennessee.

Lebron and the Cavs win is so last week's news. ;)

Football - a game played with the feet. Seems accurate to me.

Hate to be a party pooper as I enjoyed Iceland's win as much as anyone..but the biggest upset in football happened a few months before with Leicester City winning the Premier League.

Iceland is ranked 34th in the world...3 spots behind the USA. They're not a name brand, but they're not a bad team by any means.

I admittedly know little about soccer but I wondered if it was really as surprising as it was being made out to be. I knew Iceland tied Portugal, which was a pretty big deal.

Leicester City was absurd. There just isn't anything you can compare it to. It'd almost be like a D-2 school coming up to D-1 then winning the national championship that year. Crazy.

But Iceland's win IS a massive, massive upset IMO. They are a solid team, but that isn't a game anyone would think they win.

Overall, soccer is a sport where I think upsets are much more likely than a sport like football. Kinda like Hockey, I think a undermatched team in soccer can play a style tactically that allows them to be competitive against teams that are much, much better than them.

In football, if you massively outmatched physically, tactics can't really keep you in it.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Sidenote... For as frustrated as I am at times by US Soccer, our men's national team has the key piece to potentially be competitive against better teams... That piece is an elite goalie. PACK THE BOX!

As a big "football" fan, I'm not sure I'm sold on Mr. Guzan nearly as much as I've been sold on past, truly elite goal keepers. Names like Friedel, Keller, and Howard have started for top teams in Europe. But, I do hope I'm proven wrong, because an elite keeper is a definite advantage. Elite keepers made the difference for Chile, and Iceland both this week.

Isn't the key piece Germans with one American parent?

Things are looking up. American futbol fans have not seen the likes of this ever:

Pulisic (Borussia Dortmand -- as a teenager !)
Wood (Hamburg)
Yedlin (Sunderland via Tottenham)
Brooks (Hertha)
Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach)
Zelalem (Arsenal)
Miazga (Chelsea)
Hyndman (Fulham)
Green (Bayern Munich)
and the list goes on....

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

It is key, and it's key because every other country in the world does the same sort of thing. See former Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva - plays for Croatia, born in Brazil.

Being nice to goats for the past 71 years has not worked that well. It seems that a change of course is in order.

You know, I can't argue with that logic.
