I agree that our fans are rather non-fanatical. The most that I can remember (and I only saw/heard this on video as I wasn't there personally) was one late season home game in really cold weather in which we clinched the MACEast with a win over Temple. The crowd wasn't huge (probably due to bad weather) but they were REALLY into the game.

That said, if we had to choose one or the other, would folks go for alcohol or winning a title (well, a full season in which that always appears obtainable)?

The title opportunity, for sure. But I'd like it even more if I could imbibe in a beer or two along the way.

My avatar was from that game. That is my favorite game that I've attended in Peden, but I also wasn't at the Pitt game. Gotta think those two games are in most people's Top 5. Both Solich-era!

I think our basketball fanbase is a bit more "fanatical." While some people have claimed they get chirped at for standing at times in the Convo, it is NOWHERE near as bad as Peden where you've got multiple people complaining when you are trying to stand up and get people cheering on 3rd down.

If we could get the fan excitement/atmosphere that we have in the Convo into Peden, it'd be a much more exciting environment.

Part of that is just because basketball has been much more successful historically. Another part of that is the Convo is really MUCH better designed than Peden (from the perspective of getting fans active in the game)

I've seen crazier things happen.

I stand up all the time in the second row of the Phillips Section on the 50 yard line, and I haven't once had anyone tell me to sit down. For the record, Bill Hess' daughter sits right behind me, but there are others whose vision I block and/or they stand up too when I stand up. I don't actually look back to see very often because my eyes are on the action on the field.

Basketball is a much easy game to get into. The game is half the time of football, you can identify with the players because you can see them, and the band is right there - it's like being in the front row of a concert. Plus, you don't have to start watching the weather 3 days before to see if you're going to go or not.

To each his own. I'm not much for basketball. I'll watch and support the team, but my interest level is casual.

Yeah, I'm certainly more of a basketball fan, but I'd say I used to be closer to 50/50 at some point in my teenage years. The older I get, the more the way college football and the NFL are run bothers me. And I'll be honest, the amount of time a game takes because of TV has some bearing on that. All that said, I am more of an OU Football fan than I've ever been, and come to more games now than I did 10 or so years ago.

Alan makes good points though. I might come down and sit in the rain for OU vs Miami, but there's no way I'm convincing my wife, and/or some friends to come to that game in the rain. Conversely, we've made the drive to Athens in some pretty hairy weather to come to hoops games in the warm confines of The Convo.

Also agree that basketball is easier to get into the game. Oddly, I've never had a fan give me a hard time about standing too long, or at appropriate times for basketball, but I did at last year's Marshall game when the timing was appropriate.

I'm with The Optimist too: The Convo is built to be loud. Peden isn't so much. Also basketball success is a great point. Prior to Frank, there wasn't much to be terribly proud of historically.

Back to the original topic of the thread, how could they implement the selling of beer at games while being able to enforce the age limit? For example, the last time I saw it, at UD Arena, they prohibit beer in the student section altogether. At Peden that would be very difficult.

Beer, even if available, would certainly only be sold on the tower side. Not sure why a 21 year old student wouldn't be allowed to take it to his/her seat, though.

I'm sure why: He or she could easily accidentally leave it for an innocent under 21 year old to pick up for themselves. We employed this tactic at UC Basketball games in the late 90's. So they'd have to have a spot near the student side where beer would be banned, or something like that.

At this time, I don't think the Peden infrastructure could support beer sales. Think of the problems we already have with concession lines and bathrooms. Beer sales would compound this exponentially.
