I enjoy ripping the quality of The Post reporting as much as the next BA poster, but this is very clearly an article focused on a former Athens HS QB as opposed to coverage of Ohio State football.

I've seen crazier things happen.

BillyTheCat, stop being such a baby. Burrow is from Athens, his dad Coaches for OU. Most Bobcat fans root for Burrow to be good, what's the big deal?

Even if he wasn't on the team, I think it is pretty clear that there are many OSU fans on the OU campus. Shouldn't a paper write articles towards it's target audience?

Wow, 1/2 you guys call me an OSU apologist and the other half think I'm complaining about the Post covering this. Funny, if you look back, I was touting the kid 3-4 years ago when some claimed he'd never play at OSU.

Who cares if the kid is from Athens? The ultimate proof of confidence in the program and he goes to OSUcks? Give me a break. The Post covering these clowns is a complete bandwagon J-O-K-E.

From that article:

“(Burrow)’s doing pretty good,” Meyer said. “I don’t think he’s quite the athlete that J.T. (Barrett) is right now, but he’s becoming a much better runner. His release is night and day what it was.”

I would love to sit with a QB coach and watch film to see the change.

His foot work and release is much improved, he's coming over the top more and has a quicker delivery.

It's been awhile since The Post covered OSU. Since its a local kid I'll cut them some slack.

Where are Burrow/Solich friends coaching? He's gonna have to transfer after next season to realize his dream of playing. Vanderbilt? Ohio? Youngstown St.?

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Article is written by a 419 transplant who brought his OSU fixation with him. Local kid gives him an angle to incorporate his love of Scarlet into his Post position. Does not matter to him who the audience is as he does the same on his social media sites. Joey is a guy with local interest who is getting a bit of interest in the spring game. Newsworthy to locals who know the fam or follow the Bulldogs. Eve n with the backgound in bucknut lust it is written from a local story perspective and does not really push the issue like the rags in Bowling Green, Toledo, Dayton and other towns round Ohio do...

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Anyone have any tales or memories or stats of major prospects (in any of the major sports) going to schools away from where their parent coached.

My immediate reaction is to be kinda peeved that we couldn't keep young Burrow at home. I'm thinking that he'd have attracted upscale recruits (espec O-linemen). And, if he proves worthy, pro scouts will find a guy or gal no matter where he or she plays.

I'd rather be a hometown local hero than not.

Jack Harbaugh was DC at Stanford while son Jim was in high school, and HC at Western Michigan while Jim was at Michigan. That's the closest example I can think of.

Mike Wren he played basketball at Miami while his father was the baseball coach and had been an assistant basketball coach under Coach Snyder. Mike was an All-MAC basketball player and a member of the Miami Hall of Fame.

Doesn't the Dispatch occasionally write stories about the Bobcats, or at the very least local interest stories i.e. Nathan Carpenter etc... Seems like we are making too much about one Joe Burrow story that many in Athens are probably interested in. As far as I know the Post doesn't have a buckeye beat reporter or anything like that.

It's odd that it's The Post covering OSU if the angle is an Athens product getting an opportunity at QB. Would The Post do this if there wasn't a local angle? This seems like it's more Messenger territory.

Dispatch does occasionally cover Ohio (not as much lately). However, while not a reader of the o$u Lantern, my guess is that the student newspaper of o$u does not cover Ohio Bobcat sports.

Two different towns. There is one high school in Athens and 21 in the Columbus City system.

Not sure exactly when The Post started pushing into coverage of Athens HS football, but it seems like past 3-4 years maybe? Seems like an Athens County focus as opposed to just Athens HS. Decent # of articles on Trimble, Federal Hocking, Nelsonville-York. Friday feature.

I certainly doubt it is hugely popular with Ohio students. I guess they were trying to push heavier into local demographic?

Ohio University student newspaper should not be covering Ohio AT&TM sports. Feels slimy.

The Post's mission statement from its website is below. I would think in their opinion this article checks the "Athens and Athens County", "City", and "Sports" boxes. While it's a student run paper, it doesn't not seem its scope is focused solely on the University community. Not saying I vote for more coverage of the Suckeyes, just saying they don't appear to have strayed from their mission.

Mission Statement:

"The Post, an editorially independent, student-run newspaper serving Ohio University, Athens and Athens County, provides coverage of campus, city, state, sports, features, national and international issues while serving the purpose of educating its readership and its student employees."

What I find intersting is that one of The Post's writers is a student in Athens High School.

Guess there aren't enough O.U. students interested in writing for The Post.
