To Quote a staff member "Maleek Irons looks like Alabamas Derrick Henry no idea why he is not getting carries instead of Papi White between the tackles." This source also mentioned that he is confounded by the fact that we only use 2 backs and that coaches dont trust Brown "in the doghouse" or seem inclined to use better the physically bettor gifted RBs. Now this us from someone there everyday and on the sidelines involved. It also reminds me as I posted before College Coaches dont always play the best players. Aj/Daz combine for maybe 150 yds Coaches seem ok bc they havent turned it over. He mentioned he really hopes kids dont transfer due to this mindset and Irons/Brown gets some opportunities this season. Interesting water cooler talk if you ask me.

FS has been pretty outspoken about how strong the RB position is right now. I think AJ and Daz are playing well, but Irons and Brown are good players and will get chances. I'm hoping we see them each for 5+ carries this Saturday.

Daz and Papi make good H-backs. But this is a more practical formation when Vick is a running threat.

There are a number of skills needed in a back: running and running hard is important. But they must also be able to hold on to the ball, pick up blitzes/the rush, and catch the ball out of he backfield. Most backs that are featured in high school and come out of small schools often struggle with the latter two simply because they were never asked to do it. He may be able to do the first. We don't know about the rest. And unfortunately for fans that is evaluated/determined in practice not on normal Saturdays. Yes there are running plays they could call if we put him out there but that would take one of the other backs off the field and tell a smart D what is most likely the call. Maybe a the margin is enough on Saturday to get some runs. But if we sit Vick the margin may be less and I would expect to see rest of the offense and its players to stay closer to the norm.

I can't imagine taking the appeal for playing time to social media will produce his intended results.

If he's going to whine on social media about playing time, then I don't want him. If he's not on the field then there's a reason beyond "the coaches are stupid/jerks." If he wants it then prove to the coaches he deserves to be out there.

The opposing team sucks!

I think he handled that pretty well. It isn't like he called anyone out... Just stated out he was feeling.

He didn't say anything about the coaches. He just said he was discouraged. I think what he needs is encouragement.

I am starting to wonder if Roger Lewis had came to Ohio if he would be sitting right now the guy leads the entire nation as a sophomore. Recruits want to go somewhere they can play and develop.

There's a million reasons he might feel discouraged. Might have nothing to do with football.

First, thank you for stating that we don't know. Most of us want to find out.

Running back non-running skills can be learned fairly readily it would appear. Teams all over start true freshmen or guys who've only been in the program for a year...as here.

Given the lack of effectiveness for this offense for prolonged periods, it wouldn't seem that Irons could do worse than what we've put on during those long stretches

The sample's admittedly small, but Irons was pretty good on the two plays on which he was in. And there sure as heck have been points in which he could have been inserted more often in the course of five games.

And, most importantly..and with an eye toward his size and, allegedly speed...what if the guy is a really, really good running back? But, hey, let's not find that out.

I know that the analogy isn't exact, but most of us want to see Kaminsky play this hoops season. I wonder if Saul will keep him on the bench until he learns to rebound, defend, pass, etc.

Can we now close this thread.

We are 4-1 overall
We are 1-0 in the conference
And it is Miami week

Yet people are upset that a redshirt freshman is not playing and that he is upset on twitter.

Move on to Miami folks.

Does the time stamp on this mean he tweeted during yesterday's second quarter?

It says 6:16 p.m. when I look at it, so that would be a short time after the game was over.

That's pretty much where I'm at! In fact, I hope some player's upset all the way to Ohio having a 13-1 record and that elusive MACC that Monroe "occasionally" mentions. :)

And this is the perfect week to start Irons.

I think someone else said that it's not a real fair test to put him in right in the middle of a game when everyone expects him to get the ball.

Perfect week.
