I just saw the report on Bleacher Report. I'm not a big fan of all these transfers from other schools. It makes Ohio feel more like Akron with each one we add. It's also going to make for a very crowded backfield as we have a lot of young RB's already.

Agreed that we will have a crowd, but by the time he is eligible A.J. and Dorian Brown will be seniors.
I don't have an issue with this transfer. We recruited Hilliard for a few years in HS. There is a lot of pressure for kids to sign with a "big name" school. Glad our staff made a good impression and he reached out to us.

I agree. I don't mind the transfers at all. Especially if they don't have any baggage and are from Ohio.

Since he is transferring before classes start, he'll have to sit out 2015, but can play in 2016, so they will be Juniors.

Last year we started a true freshman walk on... I think our depth at RB may be greatly exaggerated.

And when you consider we'll be running 2-back sets all the time, that's only 3-deep. ;)

Yep. Are the young RBs like White and Irons any better than Garrett and Davidson? There wasn't as many recruiting hype masters on here back in those days and that is the difference. I said it on the recruiting board that with the walk on program and the constant networking for transfers line depth isn't so much an issue so it makes sense to load up on more skill players. It makes for more competition and better odds of finding that OUlette in the rough.

What does this have to do with anything? Completely different rosters and coaching philosophies.

After seeing him play in high school I am glad he is going to be on our team instead of another MAC school. Would rather not watch him gash the defense of a team I cheer for again once a year for the next few years. = )

Coming from a strong program like St. X I am hoping he will be a no-nonsense player and add another weapon to our offense (or maybe defense?).

No problem. Which schools would you like to take the comparison from? Please list a few acceptable schools and we will go with their numbers. Would Troy be alright? I remember Ohio's staff studied with them after playing the in the bowl. This year they have ten RBs on the roster.

There is no comparison to any school. Like I said, different coaching staffs, rosters and philosophies all over. Some programs are able to carry more RBs because they have the scholarships open. Some programs are able to carry more because they rotate more in and out of the system. Some programs have less because they like to feature one guy. Some have less because they have scholarship limitations.

Yeah, there are some schools like Auburn and LSU that sometimes rotate as many as four running backs at a time.

I think we will rotate that many this year. Daz, Oulette and Papi are all locks to see the ball. Not that far of a stretch to assume Brown or Irons will also be in the rotation.

I think Hilliard is a good addition to our stable. And yes, I view this as a stable of good backs. I agree with Frank that this is the best group of running backs we've had in his time here.

We had 3 games over 200+ yards rushing last year. Idaho, and then with 2 more coming in our last 3 games.

I predict we go over 200 again vs Idaho. I also will guess that multiple Ohio running backs will catch passes against Idaho. Papi, Daz and Oullette again seeming the most likely.

I hear Irons is making a big case for more PT.

What I like is the contrasting styles of Irons & Oullette compared to Daz and Papi. When you consider their skill sets, I don't think it is a reach at all to think the coaching staff could use all of them. In fact, I think their variety is one of the things that has me most excited.

Agreed. If everyone can hold on to the ball, there's going to be lots of options. Power, speed, etc.

+1

...and that's how a 4th string, true Freshman walkon ended up becoming the starter. If we don't have a repeat, I agree with those that have said we will see a lot of different running backs this year, with different styles, and used in different ways.

If they haven't improved at holding on to the ball, you could be right. Let's hope that they have, in which case there is quite a bit of depth.

I'm okay with a RB rotation of sorts. But I'm also in the camp that holds that some RBs need multiple reps to reach peak performance. If one of Ohio's RBs is emerging as more effective than the others, I hope he gets the majority of carries. That hope doesn't preclude change-of-pace backs getting carries but not so many that the lead back loses his growing feel for the game.

Agree. Triple option allowed for the featuring of several backs. One back set doesn't. I doubt that we have several All-MAC level backs. Find one who is and let him roll.

Of course, we need to run some two running back sets, also.

By the way, why would anyone think anything other than that OUellette is going to get 75-80% of the carries?

Hilliard in and Colbert out (for now) according to Arkley,

OK, Hilliard is a walkon, which makes sense, given that Ohio can't have any left. Perhaps someone can explain what this means?

Durability. Oullette was pretty durable for us last year and even he has admitted the grind took its tole. By mixing up backs, you keep guys fresh. I agree with those who say some consistency is required to develop a rhythm, but I don't think that number needs to be north of 70%.

Additionally to that reason, the other reason I want to see multiple guys touching the balls is because these backs have different skill sets. Are you really going to sit here and tell me that having a speedy runner like Papi or Daz to give the defense different looks isn't beneficial? LC is right, if they aren't holding onto the ball, we will scrap that. If they are trustworthy with the ball, forcing the defense to worry about Daz or Papi in space is nothing but a good thing for our offense.

I thought papi looked pretty darn good against Kent before his injury and recall his fumble came when he got injured.

I've seen crazier things happen.
