Gang, my computer dated the 2014 Media Guide at 7/23/14. Just had the Media Day. Has anyone seen a 2015 Media Guide?

Definitely were printed and distributed at Detroit MAC Media Day and the local media day earlier this week. Is a pretty big spiral bound deal, though not the "showpiece" hyper-glossy kind you'd see sold to the public on newsstands. Highly functional and purpose-built.

Willing to bet a PDF of same will end up online at some point soon.

Hoping we see media guides soon. It has to be out by Monday 8/31 latest. Best Sports Admin school in the world (they do lots of OHIO's promotions)and a top 5 U.S. School of Journalism, but no media guide.
How can that be?

There's no connection b/t the J-school and athletic department. It's my understanding that the AD has reached out multiple times to Scripps to offer internship (unpaid) writing opportunities but was told "not interested." I don't think these offers were even communicated to students. So much for athletics becoming a "learning laboratory." I know I would have jumped at the chance when I was in Athens.

After my student-athlete service was over, I spent my fifth year working in the athletics department as part of the PACE (Program to Aid Career Exploration) program -- a paid job. I was responsible for media guides for some Olympic sports. So I would think if that program was still around, the AD could get a paid position out of it from a J-school grad via PACE.

Also, I'm not sure you need any official permission from the J-school on this. Why couldn't the AD just offer a student internship for this open to any qualified student? I think many students would want to be a part of it for their professional development and resume.

As a long ago J-school grad, I'm very disappointed to hear this. Maybe approach the College of Communication? Why would anyone NOT want to participate?

Back in the day, while a student of the J-Schl, I interned in the Athletics Dept, compiling info for the basketball media guide. A valued and fun learning experience.

While Scripps does do some great things, they really don't like associating with the athletic department and sports journalism. A lot of schools (such as Penn State and Indiana) have blown past them in this part of the field.

One of my roommates "Carl" who had been volunteering in the Sports Information Office was enjoying the experience and encouraged me to meet with Glenn Coble and (the late) Frank Morgan.

Carl and I were both volunteers in the office, our only compensation was leftover pizza and "soda" from the press conferences and very nice referral letters when we graduated.

Carl was the editor of the 1985-86 Basketball Media Guide and is listed as so in the Media Guide. I was the editor of the Golf Media Guide for two years. If my memory serves me correctly I had a budget of $500 for the golf media guide and Carl had a budget in the area of $10,000.00 for the basketball media guide. Of course the "non-revenue" media guides were much more limited and did not have the glossy covers and paper stock. I had to be very resourceful and was able to gain some assistance from the secretaries in the athletic departments who volunteered to type the content since they had "fancy typewriters" that could type the content into a justified/block format. I then sought out current golf coach Bob Cooley who was in the printing business at the time who donated his services and then materials at cost to keep me within budget.

There were about 12 student volunteers in the sports information office and we had a variety of duties that included the publication of the media guides, press releases and working as statisticians at football and basketball games.

Additional experiences I had included writing feature stories, organizing post game press conferences for visiting football coach and serving as the "Floor Engineer" for televised basketball games. As the floor engineer for games I sat at the scorers table and would stand and signal the refs for the TV times during the game. The TV director in the truck would then signal the end of commercials and I would relay the signal the official scorer and PA announcer to hit the horn and end the timeout.

As you can imagine, the budget for MAC sports information offices is a fraction of the budget of schools from major conferences. Over the years after graduation I used to order media guides and was sometimes frustrated like many of you with the delays, but understood the delays with such a small staff.

I am not sure what if any connections there is between the Athletic Department and University, but it was a wonderful opportunity and my referral letter and example of the media guide played a significant role in earning my first job (two weeks after graduation) with a major printing company (Standard Register).

My last two hours on the Ohio University Campus was the day after my last winter quarter final was overseeing the photo shoot for the media guide. At the end Harry Snavley the photographer asked us if we were finished and after I said yes we have all of the pictures, Kermit spoke up and said that we had missed one. As I was looking at my list confused as to which picture we forgot, Kermit walked up and put his arm around me for one last picture. After Kermit died, I watched the video tribute for him and was shocked when our picture was included.

It's not just the Athletic Dept. that's a little behind. Ohio University itself is way behind. If you go to Ohio.edu and look at the campus map, there's no listing whatsoever for the 4 new dorms on South Green. The Wolfe St. apartments are still shown and they've been knocked down for several years. Walter Fieldhouse isn't shown at all either. If you're trying to get freshmen acclimated to the campus, you should probably give them up-to-date maps.
