Bass #67

A fair evaluation. #67. Depth may hinder any DBs stats from appearing All MAC. We shall see.

Something is seriously wrong here. Bass was horrible last year. Nearly every long pass play was completed on his side of the field. He just could not compete successfully against taller and more talented WRs. Now, as return guy he may have been under utilized. He may have much more talent in that area.

These folks just don't know Ohio football like we do! Any of us "posting in June" types could write better summaries of our team or provide a list of our top N players. And that includes Bcat2's Phil Steele, who made the same mistake.

Last season there was a 23-20 win vs Akron. Mr. Kristoff took one drive away from Akron with an interception. Mr Bass took two drives away from Akron with an interception and a forced fumble. Bass will be a Sr. this season, which, to me, means he will find a way to contribute. A mistake would be to undervalue Mr. Bass.

It'll be interesting to see how much playing time Bass gets at CB this year. My guess is less than last year.

I agree. Depth has improved and the staff has no problem putting young talent on the field. I could even see Mr. Bass at nickleback when the match-ups work to advantage.

I agree that might be a more natural position for him.

Bass is an outstanding tackler, and he also plays well facing the play, but he's less effective with his back to the QB. The shift from Cover 2 to Cover 4 changed the nature of his duties significantly. Rather than being responsible for sweeps and screens and a short zone, as he was in 2013, in 2014 he was asked to play 1:1 on deep routes, with his back to the QB. I have no doubt he's worked hard to improve, and it remains to be seen how he'll be utilized this fall, but I'm sure he'll be an important player.

Fine, I'll take the bait.

Here's some analysis even you can understand Bcat2. Each team has 22 starters on offensive and defense and 2 of those are corners...so 9% of all your starters are corners. For the sake of argument lets say that when picking the top 70 players we keep those proportions.

That means that you select approximately 6 or 7 corners for your top 70 from the 13 teams in the conference. That means only the top 25% of all starters in the league will make this list.

Now, considering that Bass had a rough season last year and was benched in favor of younger and more inexperienced players...it makes little to no sense to select him for such a list.

My original point was that the makers of preseason lists are confused. Most of them just regurgitate what they read in other publications or what was printed in prior seasons. Anyone who watched us play last season knows that Wells is the star of our defensive backfield and coaches (who watch film and don't read Phil Steele) will not be throwing his way this season.

Hustlebelt acknowledges Mr. Bass did not have the stats in 2014 that were expected based upon his performance in 2013. They had him at #11 on this list before last season and he is much lower this time around. L.C. has explained how there were changes to the defensive scheme which vastly improved the overall defense bringing it up from 6th to #2 in the MAC. Players like Bass and Basham were asked to do things differently that were better for the team but made it appear they were doing less. Mr. Bass, in fact, was being given the most difficult tasks week to week. Mr. Bass is the first Bobcat listed so far. He will not be the last. I agree, Mr. Wells should make it too. All the LBs, Basham, at least two OL, but, these young men have made me proud and I like them all.
