I'm not sure where they got the notion that many of us were disappointed in the Attack Cat for being "too intense" when it was introduced. I don't recall any criticism among this group. I thought it was a signal that Ohio was done with doormat status. Of course, it took a couple years to get us off the front stoop.

One cool thing I learned from that article: I've seen the Missouri Western logo before, and I never noticed the shape of the griffon before. Kudos to the logo designer for that cleverness.

I was similarly impressed to learn that the Oregon O is supposed to represent both Hayward Field and Autzen Stadium.

It was amazing how much heat we took when the Athletics Department decided to switch from the Paw to the Attack Cat. All these years later it looks like it was a good move. Somewhere Tom Boeh is smiling!

Not. The latest marketing trick is to hand out "awards" or "best of." Anybody or company can do it and unfortunately lots of folks buy into it. On the flip side when a ranking doesn't please an institution (party school rankings), they dismiss it as hogwash. You can't have it both ways. Anyway, I fly a paw flag at home 365 and have an attack cat towel on my golf bag. With the divots I've taken at the SlowU golf course, the towel is getting quite the workout.

There is mention on the web of it first appearing in 1996, but I seem to remember first seeing it in late 1994.

This might support that time frame - http://the-614.blogspot.com/2006/06/who-owns-ohio.html

The Attack Cat is a professionally designed logo that maximizes its effectiveness with a carefully constructed imagine that perfectly conveys its message to the viewer. And that's why I hate it.

The essence of OUr campus is that it just screams COLLEGE. What makes OU so special is that it feels like the blue print for what every college should be like, its classic, its natural, its special in that it doesn't look as if it is special. It's home.

A Paw Print is just some old school, stock selection for a logo, like something picked out of a book of random school logos a long time ago by somebody who didn't give it much thought. Its obviously not crafted by a group of design professionals who know how to maximize logo effectiveness. And that's what makes it feel like COLLEGE. OUr college.

Same goes with our mascot, the Bobcat. Of all the cats is there any less fearful and intimidating than a Bobcat? If you paid top dollar for a PR Firm to select a mascot to maximize brand effectiveness in a million years they would never offer up the undersized Bobcat. And that's what makes it the perfect mascot for OUr school.

You mean Stoner mouse? That was no Bobcat.

I'm with perimeter here though. I am not a fan of the attack cat at all. The paw would be great as a secondary logo, but something new should be designed.

Back in the 1890s for a few years OHIO was sometimes referred to as the "Chrysanthemums." When I was looking at old microfilm I saw this reference in and around the 1897 season. Perhaps we should readopt that mascot. Perfect for a bunch of flower children! ;-)

If we ever redo the logo, I would put my vote in for incorporating The Green Jinx in there... Nothing too obvious either but, just enough to make you wonder. Considering Athens' notoriety for supernatural events and the hearty embrace our students give to Halloween, a little Jinx might be a perfect fit...

BTW, whatever happened to our poster, Bobcat Jinx?

I had a NCAA football video game (EA sports version) and one year (forget the specific year, sometime within the last 10 years) on the loading screen it cycled through a couple random facts about the schools playing in the game.

For Ohio's fact, it claimed that Ohio was called the "Green and Whites" and the students voted on mascots. The Bobcat was picked because it was cunning or something like that. Not sure if this is a true fact, but I am sure someone else can verify this was in the game. I think they claimed the change was 1920ish...

Per the athletics website:

THE BOBCATS

Until 1925, or 29 years after the school colors changed from blue and white, the Ohio University athletic teams were called the "Green and White." At that time, however, the school's athletic board decided the teams needed a nickname and a campus-wide contest was initiated. Many animal nicknames were proposed but after great debate, the Bobcat won for its reputation as a sly, wily, scrappy animal.

Former student Hal H. Rowland of Athens earned the $10 first prize for proposing the winning entry. The new nickname was passed by the board on Dec. 7, 1925, and was officially adopted by President E.B. Bryan.

The Bobcat mascot first appeared at Ohio's Homecoming game against Miami on Oct. 22, 1960. Smartly clad in a bright green sweater and a baseball cap on top of its paper mache head, the Bobcat was a gift to all of Ohio University from the men of Lincoln Hall.

That day, the Ohio football squad smashed archrival Miami 21-0 and went on to arguably the university's greatest football season ever. The Bobcats finished 10-0 that year and were voted the NCAA National College Division Champion.

Dan Nichols, class of '63, was the first Bobcat mascot and set a precedent for several decades that the person donning the costume must live in Lincoln Hall. The Campus Affairs Committee decided that the Bobcat mascot would be a permanent member of the cheerleading squad and would cheer at all football and basketball games.

The Bobcat mascot has changed its appearance many times since 1960 but remains a beloved representative of Ohio Athletics. Nowadays, the Bobcat can be seen at numerous varsity athletic events and visits countless special events in the community.

...

I do recall reading somewhere else that another reason for the Bobcat being chosen was because it was a common animal in the region.

The first Bobkitten mascot was Francesca Maria Femia Hahn who lived in Howard Hall. She served as the Bobkitten for two or three seasons. A native of Mansfield, Fran now lives in New Jersey.
