Nominations for the run-pluggers are over. Now it's time to name your favorite edge-rusher. Top 2 make the team.

Dak Notestine (seconded)
Jason Carthen (seconded)
Tremayne Scott (seconded)
Kevin Carberry (seconded)
Jeremy Beutler (seconded)
Rahim Slaise (seconded)
Andre Jackson (seconded)
Jameson Hartke
Art Adams
Curtis Meyers
Steve Groves

Since there was no objection otherwise, I'm leaving Slaise and Jackson here even though they were LBs.

I'm going to nominate Dak Notestine (even though I SWEAR I remember him playing the middle, his old player bio says he played end), if for no other reason than his role in the black jersey reveal video.

I'll second Rahim Slaise. one of my favorite plays from him was in a game at home. He came off the end and totally jumped over the standing blocker and was able to rush the QB. His quickness and athletic ability was uncanny.

Hmmm, was Slaise a DE or a OLB? If I remember correctly Andre Jackson and Slaise played pretty much the same position during those years when those two were spending a lot of time in the offensive backfield.

Does anyone remember?

Correct. Slaise was OLB in the 3-4. Starting DEs when Slaise played were John Kraus and Jeremy Beutler with Geno Walsh at NT.

While I'm at it, I'll nominate Art Adams.

Jackson made first-team All-MAC as a DE, playing on the right side.

I remember clearly Jackson being injured before a Miami game at Peden. His replacement was slower and weaker, and Miami capitalized by running Travis Prentice repeatedly to his left and picking up big chunks of yardage. (Hookfin was suspended for that game, and I've wondered whether Ohio might have prevailed that day had Jackson and Hookfin played.)

I nominate Jackson!

This has Jackson as 1997 All-MAC at LB.
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ohio/sports/m-footbl/...

And this has Slaise as a LB too
http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/rahim-slaise-...

This is why the 3-4 is blasphemy. OLBs are LBs, but do act more like DEs in a 4-3.

I'll leave it to the crowd to determine whether we leave them here or save them of the LB vote.

Jameson Hartke - Although I put him in the DT group already...

Hartke played DE until his Senior year, when, because they were short at DT, he moved inside. He played 3 years at DE, and one year at DT, so he belongs at either position. Others that did the same were Ernie Hodge and Brett Sykes. Casey Sayles is moving inside this fall.

Grobe's defense was an Air Force 5-2 more than a 3-4. Slaise and Jackson were both players who could get up field. Both deserve mentioned in this thread.

Though an OLB in the 3-4 as DeRuyt played it, Slaise played with his hand down more often than not, and was pre-dominately the "rush" backer, which is very similar to typical DE in the 40 schemes. (as stated by the preceding post)

that was a good defense back then.

Many outstanding names have been mentioned in this thread. Although he was never All-Mac, Jeremy Beutler was very solid as a DE in the 3-4 Defense. Jeremy is now a High School Head Coach in Jarrell, Texas.

I think we should do Slaise as a DE and Jackson as an OLB. Not sure why...I guess because those are the positions they most looked like!

In the event that Jackson is kept at a DE, I second him. He's one of the best defensive players we've had in the modern era.

Interesting read on this msg board. You all clearly are true Bobcats. I will go with Jackson b/c he was a natural football player...truly instinctive and had a high football IQ. He did love to gamble though :)

As for myself, I guess I was 1/2 decent coming off the edge. I wish our defense would have been more pressing. We always had to play within the defensive scheme because we were typically undersized back then. Coaches couldn't just tell a guy..."just go get the QB, or just cause havoc". We did play lots of Zone blitz...but as a result one of our Outside Backers were typically dropping into pass coverage. At least the strong side. If I had more opportunities to rush the passer and not covering space I think I'd have led the nation in Sacks. Well one can DREAM...

Anyway, I'm really proud of the success the program has achieved since my last game in '98. I like to think we all helped lay the ground work for the great teams that show up to play on Gameday. Nothing better to see them compete on nation TV. Representing us all well...go Bobcats!

O.H....
