This may come as a great surprise to many; it certainly came as a surprise to me. However, I'm actually glad that OSU won. I can't say that I was actually rooting for them, but I wasn't really rooting against them all that strongly as the game went on. The reason: This was the day 11 years ago that my mother-in-law passed away. She was an OSU graduate and a great Buckeye fan. My wife, in her honor, was decked out in a red outfit as we watched the game. Her brother sent her texts during the game about how much her mother would have liked to see an Ohio State win. With such emotion all about me I have to confess I had to soften somewhat my general dislike of the Evil Empire. For this night only I gave them a reprieve. My wife just went to bed happy and her brother is happy, too, as is my son. So, I'm happy that they are happy. Now, tomorrow, I'll go back to my normal mode.

Oh yes, I did receive a master's degree from OSU, the year they won a National Championship the old fashioned way -- by polling. None of this extraneous proving it on the field stuff. ;-) Today, while looking for other things, I happened upon a handwritten banner that a friend of mine had made that heralded the 1968 OSU team. This friend, a personal friend of the Hayes family, is a very big OSU fan himself. Tonight I'm scanning this old banner and sending it to him. As I recall he originally put this banner on the front door of our apartment in Columbus, which was, I guess appropriately on Stadium Drive. Anyone know where that is?

If there is one thing we learned if you watch that game it's what Desmond Howard just said on the post game review at its core football is a physical game. I still believe that since the troy debacle Ohio has tried to be cute and has gotten away what Frank learned on his sabbatical. If it's me I go back to good old fashion smash mouth football with good O and D lines.

I am OK with anyone who received a degree from Ohio State rooting for them.

Acceptable:
1. Undergraduate
2. Graduate
Unacceptable:
1. Everyone else/Walmart.

Continue on, OCF.

I'm not happy for them, but as a sports fan I'm definitely jealous of their success and notoriety. If I had a degree there I'd be rooting for them too. But it's gonna be a long offseason for non buckeye fans living in Ohio.

I'd say Frank grew up with smash mouth football, if anything the sabbatical was the beginning of his change away.

Ohio has won more games in the 4 seasons since the Troy game than in the 4 seasons prior.

So you should only root for a team if you went to school there?
When we manage to get 7000 or 8000 in the Convo, you actually think they all went to Ohio? I have six tics in Section 2 and the different folks I bring have no such connection, but they root for Ohio. I only wish we could get the Walmart fan, to grow our fan base because if not for them the Convo would be quite empty.

I completely support catering to the Walmart fan to grow the fanbase. I've actively campaigned for it (at length) on this site.

That doesn't change anything I've said above. You should root for the school you went to. Period. If some other fanbase can steal your allegiance, good for them. In today's NCAA money race, that is how championships are won. Why rely on strictly alumni as donors when you can convince others to help the cause? That is brilliant strategy. It's like free money.

To my above post, I would add that I also excuse family ties. Your parents, siblings, or kids went to a school. Go ahead and root for them. Still should be after your own school...

I agree with this, and think about it a lot before I get too wound up about OSU, which happens too often unfortunately.

At my peak sports fan-ness, I'm a college hoops fan and Reds fan above all else. Because I grew up around it, I root for THE University of Cincinnati . I always have, and likely always will. It's a connection I have with my pops, whose degree is from there. It's also where my folks met. My sis is a graduate of THE University of Dayton, and I root for the Flyers, and go to an occasional game there too. I believe it's the premier basketball experience in our fine state. (THE: hey, they do it, we all might as well too)

At both places, I absolutely openly cheer for another school. I do it without any second thought at all. For me, as The Optimist said, it's about rooting for where I have a personal connection of some kind. For some reason, not everyone has this same approach. While I'm not likely to ever openly utter the words "Go 8ucks" anytime soon, I am trying to at least respect those who have a similar connection in the way I do to schools that aren't my own.

All that said, I don't make 2-3 trips a month during basketball season, and 3-4 trips during football season to Cincinnati or Dayton. I come to Athens, my own Alma mater instead, as many of you do as well. Frankly, I feel sorry for those who are sports fans that are consistently missing the opportunity to connect with their Alma mater. It has been, and continues to be one of the most rewarding ways I spend my time.

Billy and Perimeter, I am talking about what have you done lately (the last 31 games). We all know you win with players, I get that. But, if you are going to copy an offense, try copying one from a National Championship team. Who in their right mind copies Troy? And, if you are talking success, other than year #1, FS & Co did much better those early years than they have lately. More East titles and even a MACC game. Then we go Troy...ugh!

If you watched that game last night, on offense you saw what pulling guards and blocking tight ends can do for an offense. And, on defense, please give OHIO some more nasties on the D-line. We are no longer the most physical team in most games, we like to be cute.

You know the saying...RUN the Ball, STOP the run and WIN games. It all starts with physical guys up front on both sides of the ball. Let's get back to that.

I would agree that the sabbatical was the beginning of the change, because he spent a lot of time visiting teams that threw the ball.

I have always believed that the real reason for the change was that he couldn't get the players he wanted/needed to run his old offense, especially after McRae was gone. I felt that, in the end he copied Troy, not because their offense was the best thing going, but because it enabled Troy to accomplish a lot with a little.

What is interesting is that the recruits the last few years are much closer to the players that are needed for the old offense than any recruits since Solich arrived. I could see Irons and Brown at I-Back, AJ at fullback, and Daz/Walker as wingbacks in his old offense. The line isn't completely back to speed to run it, and Tight End is still pretty depleted from all the injuries, but both are headed in the right direction. It will be interesting to see if we see some changes that bring back aspects of the old offense, now that he finally has the players for it?

Never said not to support where you went to school only that one can also root for other schools. Have six basketball and five football tics for over twenty years and will be for Ohio all the time no matter who they are playing. but feel as alot of others that you can have other schools you root for, for what ever reason. Have three kids, two Shawnee State grads and one West Point grad. One is Michigan fan, one Ohio State fan and the other an Ohio fan. Who knows why, just their choice. My connection is going with my dad, if he could manage to get us a ticket, maybe once every year or so to an OSU game. Some of the best times I had with him as he is gone now. I also worked there for six years. So people have many reasons to root for whoever, maybe some just like to follow a winner (get on the band wagon), you did say that if not a grad or undergrad of the school it is unacceptable to root for them. Just don't understand the problem.

Please note that Ohio, IMHO, desires to field a balanced offense that given the circumstances will lean totally toward the run if games can be ended favorably with it. See BB's 1600 yard season. O$U still produced 250/game passing in their last three games. They are not a run only team. O$U/Alabama/Oregon at their own level do what MAC coaches do, look for favorable match-ups to exploit.

89 fires set, several reports of shots fired, one goal post torn down and tear gas used in Columbus last night and only a "handful" of arrests?

Meanwhile Halloween in Athens = 80 arrests?

I agree with balance. My point is, and I think last night pointed it out, RUN first beats PASS first most times all things being equal.

That's because they are just kids blowing off steam. but in Athens we have a drinking problem so we warrant the extra attention from the LCB.

First thing I thought this morning. At State, its just college kids and fans being college kids and fans. At OHIO its out of control underage consumption. (end down the TV Trucks! Call CNN!)

ok, so you're saying after the Troy game I have to ignore the first 21 games that don't support your narrative and just focus on the 31 after that that do? Fine, So I'll run that model in reverse and ignore the 21 games prior to the Troy game and look at the 31 games prior to that.

In this extremely customized look at the data the Bobcats were 15-18 before Troy and are 15-18 after.

And why copy Troy when we can copy Ohio State, all we need to do is recruit the same type of players they recruit to fill those same type of rolls. Easy.

I'm not sure how you find the total alumni base, but the current enrollment is:
Ohio State - 57,466
Minnesota - 51,853
Penn State - 45,518
Illinois - 44,520
Michigan - 43,625

If I recall correctly, Minnesota has been over 50k for a long time, so I would have guessed them for the largest alumni base.

I looked around the web, and couldn't find any firm answer. Here's a discussion that didn't reach any conclusive answer: http://tinyurl.com/o9f3gel

Here's a web site that claims U. of Illinois is the largest at 460,000:

Penn State has the largest dues paying alumni association, there is no actual list of living alumni of Universities, and many claims, OSU is right there at the top.

LC there is no actual list, but several claims.

Ohio State claims nearly 500,000 living alumni

http://www.osu.edu/highpoints/alumni/

Penn State states they have 582,000 living addressable alumni

http://stats.psu.edu/

Michigan up there, as is Minn.
