There truly needs to be a third option, the "I don't really care" approach. I could play the I don't like Ohio State card, and get into all the things I find annoying about them, but honestly, I've grown tired of all that. I basically just do my best to ignore the football team and it's fans.

Bob Valvano tweeted that he was happy to see LeBron James supporting his hometown team. Hometown?

This kind of crap "journalism" just fuels the fire that everyone in Ohio is supposed to be an OSU fan.

Whether related or not, in a post game interview Jones was asked about a conversation with James, the subject of which was along the lines of "doing their 'hometown' proud", meaning Cleveland. Jones concurred with that. Perhaps that is the root of the confusion but I am being overly generous to the rabid Buckeye Nation who never see such subtlety.

Bob Valvano is a hack that lives off his brother's fame. And his brother was an earlier version of Calipari - cutting corners with recruits and cheating the system. He was a great personality and I truly respect his fight against Cancer, but it has masked/erased other incidents in his life.

I could use the help defending it here in the Carolinas. Even the Dukies and Heels step up for him now. And of course the NC State fans treat him like a God. How they all forget he was bought out of his contract to get rid of him is beyond me.

Bob Valvano's not really a journalist. And I'll go ahead and say The V Foundation made up for Jim's antics as a coach.

It is a great foundation. Too bad he had little to do with its success (died shortly after it was formed). The success is really a result of ESPN's efforts - his contribution is his name, story and incredible speech - which provides an indelible image for the foundation.

its pretty harsh to say that a foundation started in the name of a man who was dying of cancer didn't do much for the foundation because he up and died from the disease. Kind of like saying the guys who died at Normandy didn't really do much to defeat the Germans in Berlin. Without the first thing, there isn't the second.

Harsh bu true. I appreciate the pain and suffering Jim Valvano and his family and friends went through. But the simple truth is the success of the foundation is not from his hands. Does he deserve credit for having the foresight to team with ESPN (and they with him)? Yes, but no one would say that Jim Valvano has raised 100s of millions for Cancer. Even the foundation says it has been raised in his memory - in most cases with the impetus from ESPN. That said, having lost a brother to Cancer (and being a survivor myself), I applaud anyone that raises any amount.

As far as your analogy to the soldiers at Normandy...please. Those soldiers knowingly put themselves in a position of sacrifice for a greater cause - few things more noble or honorable than that. Jim Valvano (as he notes) did not sign up for Cancer. But I appreciate what the foundation does in his name.

Not sure if this is the same game you are referring to, but Ohio played OSU in the NIT in November 1994 in Columbus. I was there and the Bobcat win was awesome! (sent them to UVA, where they were up by 21, then UVA came back and Ohio held on to win to go to NYC).

I was at both games. The one in Athens in the NIT was Eldon Miller's last year. The Buckeyes won a close game and went on to win the NIT. The other one, in Columbus, was the pre-season NIT and OHIO beat OSU and went on to win the pre-season NIT.
