Looks like President James P. Tressel is making football a priority at Youngstown State!

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Bo Pelini-to-Youngstown State rumors just wouldn’t go away. Now it appears there is something to them.

FootballScoop.com — a website that specializes in coaching carousel news — reported late Tuesday that Pelini was set to accept the YSU football job. The website reported that an announcement could come as soon as today or Thursday.

YSU to FBS in 2017?

YSU to the MAC in 2018?

(speculating)

The cards are falling into place if this turns out to be true. May as well change the conference to the All-Ohio League and recruit Dayton into this thing.

The MAC will never let YSU in.

Not sure why they wouldn't let YSU in. They have a better stadium then most teams in the MAC and better facilities overall.

Could there be a influential community leader that is supporting this move? The DeBartolo's reached out to Pelini years ago when he became an assistant coach for the SF 49'ers, which is owned by the DeBartolo family. They are also known as big donors to YSU and supporters of Tressel as the new president at YSU.

He's paid by nebraska for the next 5 years regardless of where he coaches. He probably looks at this as somewhat of a paid vacation at his home. Well not quite, but less recruiting, less pressure, lower expectations. I think he'll do well and move on when he's off Nebraskas payroll.

Akron and Kent State would almost certainly be opposed to letting YSU in the MAC.

As a Youngstown native, I would love to see them in the MAC. Their stadium is already big enough, and the facilities are better than some MAC schools. Plus their fan base is better than most of the other MAC schools, and they'd add a TV market, albeit a smaller one.

I don't understand what their issue with YSU would be. And if the MAC commissioner can sign a multi-million dollar broadcast deal with ESPN and not get the approval of other schools, why would they need Akron and KSU to abide?

The issue is academic reputation.

But this is great news for Youngstown.

It also does not expand the footprint of the MAC at all.

It's still amazing to me that Cleveland never developed a giant Big Ten-sized university (Michigan State-esque) 100-120 years ago rather than the various mid-sized public universities of that region.

Case Western is an excellent university with an outstanding reputation. They really aren't much smaller than Northwestern.

Yeah, but Northwestern is an anomaly. It's amazing they were able to stay in the Big Ten. I weirdly always thought Northwesten, Vandy and Duke should've been the flagship schools for a conference that put academics first. Maybe stick Notre Dame in it. Maybe the service academies, too.It would've been an interesting experiment.

Case Western has one of the nicest and unique football stadiums you will find. It is built into a parking garage. Walk out of the garage right into the stadium. Very convenient in bad weather. It also allows for free viewing of games from top of garage. Student housing surrounds most of the rest of the field. Great place to visit especially being right in the arts district with the museum of art and severance hall being right there also.

Reading the Akron message board is interesting these days. They somehow have got the idea they will be invited to Conference USA with that outstanding 9100 average attendance of theirs just because they are in the Cleveland area.

They're a bit confused -- Bowden will be invited to CUSA but the rest of the program stays in Tiretown.

New name for Infocision: The Rubber Room.

I doubt Bowden is going anywhere. He had a lot of transfers, trying to give the program a quick boost, but now they face a ton of losses. Here is their depth chart:
http://tinyurl.com/mbh2b8v
They had 10 Senior starters that will be gone this year (5 off, 5 def) as well as another 10 Seniors who were 2d string. Thus, they lose 20 of their top 44 players. Ouch. To make matters worse, they also have 12 Junior starters and 5 juniors who are 2d string, so they will get hit hard with losses again next year.

With those heavy losses, what is Bowden going to do? Go back to JUCO to replace his entire team over the next two years? Recruit a bunch of freshmen, and play all Freshman and Sophomores in 2 years? Either way it seems unlikely that Akron won't be moving backwards the next couple years, and if they are going backwards, who is going to be hiring Bowden away?

I know they aren't near us or Miami academically, but are they really worse than Akron?
