Head Coach says its all but official. I'm not sure if this is for next season or what but it sounds definite.

"With UAB's football future hanging in the balance, a person close to the decision-making process told USA TODAY Sports that athletics director Brian Mackin has given indications the program will shut down this week and that Mackin is working on a separation agreement from the university."

"Barring a last-minute reversal in the decision-making process, it's unclear what shutting down football would mean for UAB's athletic future. Another person with direct knowledge of Conference USA matters told USA TODAY Sports that the league's commissioner, Britton Banowsky, did not have enough support among school presidents to keep UAB in the league without football."

If they had done this last year I have to figure the A10 would have wanted UAB. The A10 added Davidson to get back to an even number. Maybe the MVC will take UAB. It is stretching far south for the MVC or Horizon to take them and far West for the Colonial. If they drop football to have more money for the rest of the University and presumably some for the rest of the Athletic Department then where do the rest of the sports go? A UAB basketball program at the level its been at wouldn't really fit in a conference like the Atlantic Sun or Southern or OVC.

We have seen how off balance a number 13 is. A conference can make 8. 9, 10, 11, 12, or 14 work but 13 is just messy. Maybe CUSA will add another school after they kick UAB out.

Sunbelt maybe? I believe they have some non-football members.

They'd fit in the new Big East.

Summit. It's already spread out and they have an odd number of teams.

OK, I'll ask. Would Conference USA look at Ohio as a candidate to replace UAB? Would Ohio be interested?

That 2nd link shows a list of schools currently operating at a deficit. Ohio is on there. I wonder if that list takes into account the student fees?

I think Conference USA would be interested in Akron, Buffalo, NIU, or Toledo before Ohio.

So every MAC school save NIU is on the list. Some feel dropping a division would fix things, but I'd like to see the list of schools playing FCS(D1-AA) football that are operating at a loss as well. Anyone know what our subsidy rate is or where one can find it?

I applaud this decision.

If it were a straight business decision on the part of the university I would agree. But the politics and personal vendettas behind the decision run deep.

I believe there was an article a few years ago that had OHIO as the most subsidized program in America. I'm sure someone still has that link.

Based on city size which is big to them or what?

C-USA is trying to setup good rivals for each school. Ohio would be a natural choice in that regard. However, C-USA as it is now, is too "southern" for my liking. If they somehow managed to add Ohio, Akron and Toledo together, I might be more interested. However, as has been stated here, I don't think the powers-that-be care what I think, or even what Jeff McKinney thinks, as hard as that might be to contemplate. ;-)

So, it will be interesting to see if enrollment or annual giving is impacted negatively. I'm guessing they never had much annual giving to begin with, but what do I know?

Who was the last division I team to give up? I know several I-AA/FCS schools have done so in the last 10-15 years.

We still have any scholarships open?

It was Pacific in the old Big West 1A football confernce in about 1994. I think it was Cal State Fullerton dropped from the Big West 3 or 4 years earlier.

Exaggeration much? The article cited here proves that isn't true.

And NIU should be on the list, clearly they are subsidized by student fees too. Not sure why they are not...unless they just didn't provide any information.

You may like the outcome, but do you truly applaud the process? If we were under O$U's board of trustees and they railroaded our university at every opportunity, I hope you wouldn't be applauding it. Read more into the story. It's about much more than football. UAB has been held back by the Alabama-centric board for decades. It's absolutely sickening.

Yes, absolutely will enrollment be affected negatively or they will have to adjust their pitch or programming keep the numbers they are used to. Take it from a guy who has stood behind the Ohio University table at college fairs. Division 1 football legitimizes your school to a lot of prospective students.

The list just shows schools that spend more money on football than they make on it, and the difference. Where the money comes from to make up the difference can vary.

Using the term deficit = subsidy. How else are they covering the deficit? Whether it's via student fees or tuition $$$...same thing.

Great link Alan! Do you have that going back a few years. We are clearly in the upper 25th %. But seems we are getting better.
