Anyone care to take guesses at why the West has become so dominant lately? This year Toledo, NIU, WMU, and CMU are a combined 12-0 against the east with an average margin of nearly 2 touchdowns. Even against the 2 worst teams in the West, the east is 3-2, and needs a BG win over Ball State to stay over .500.

It seems like it's been going this way for awhile. It also seems that it isn't a matter of the West getting better (they seem about the same as usual), but a matter of the East getting worse.

Temple used to be in the East so that helped.

Other than that, the MAC is like NASCAR. Everyone's car is roughly the same and it comes down to the drivers (or not, since I know very little about NASCAR).

What's funny about the MAC is although the West has been dominant during the season, the Championship game is always up for grabs. The list of past MAC Champs is somewhat even

-2013: BG
-2012: NIU
-2011: NIU
-2010: Miami
-2009: CMU
-2008: Buffalo
-2007: CMU
-2006: CMU
-2005: Akron
-2004: Toledo
-2003: Miami

Pretty crazy that Toledo hasn't won the title since 2004, with as consistently good as they have been.

May I extend the though a bit?

In light of the West is so dominant, anyone have any thoughts on why we can't win the East lately and on why our record over the last 30 (and espec the MAC games in that stretch) is so poor given that we reside in the weak East?

Where are we at on this list? I guess we have to go back on this list a few more seasons.

Right there with Eastern Michigan this season

Cannot beat Central, Western or Northern Illinois

Beat Buffalo

Of course there is always Akron that makes Ohio come out on top!

I do have some theories on this. NIU and Toledo are good for reasons that are obvious. NIU is the only MAC school in Illinois and taps effectively into Wisconsin. Toledo cleans up over EMU, Akron and in some cases Cincinnati and Temple for players wanting the urban setting. In the case of Western and Central there are a couple of things at play. Its not understood from those from Ohio that Western and Central along with MSU and Michigan are the major state schools for Michigan. They are like Ohio and Miami in that regard for that state only bigger. For many kids from Detroit area who want to get away from the city they are a good choices. Michigan State lately is tapping into Ohio for a lot of players. What that means is a lot of Michigan State level players are finding themselves land at Central and Western and that is part of the reason why their recruiting classes are so high in the rankings. Kentucky is hitting Ohio hard for recruits now. Mid level Big Ten talent in Ohio that doesn't go to OSU is sucked out of this state by other power programs. Then Solich is then winning 90% of the recruiting battles at the next tier down. The result is it doesn't leave much for Miami, Kent or Akron. BG tends to do better on the recruiting trail because it is a football school. It is almost always the case that Central and Western have better athletes than Ohio MAC schools but they shoot themselves in the foot because of coaching.
